The Anti-Color Analysis Thread

FrugalFashionista · 21/02/2014 09:18

This is a safe space for anyone who
(tick any that apply)

  • wants to burn her scarves
  • will scream if someone goes semantic on 'Oyster'
  • does not want to be made to wear lipstick
  • is not looking forward to the next Kettlewell catalogue
  • does not identify with any particular season
  • will never ever do a style day
  • has self-diagnosed Stockholm syndrome
  • is tired of the tireless marketing drum of color analysis on S&B

I realize I may be endorsing an unpopular view but this thread here is for anyone who does not want to discuss color.

C'mon, am I the only one?
Raise your hand...

PS I will send a crappy lipstick personally chosen for me by a color analyst to the first taker. It's a shimmery peachy tone that has no staying power and streaks your teeth. But don't worry, it will make you look a million times better.

Budge up, I want to join. I am bemused by the 'colours' obsession on here.

plasticbanana · 21/02/2014 14:52

Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't these colour analysis systems supposed to help you discover what colours you're made OF? i.e. the colours that are in your eyes, skin, hair, teeth(!) etc. The theory being that if your clothes reflect these colours you will look more harmonious, natural and more YOURSELF.

If this is true then the problem I have with the idea is that I don't always want to project a harmonious natural look. Sometimes I think I like a bit of contrast with what are my natural colours. A bit of imbalance can make a more interesting look.

Maybe.

Is that their website? Sweet Jesus. 70s throwback

WhoWasThatMaskedWoman · 21/02/2014 14:54

I'm in. I've been trying on clothes for 30something years and have worked out by trial and error which colours suit me. When one of them comes into fashion on the high street I wait until the end of the trend and then scoop up great armfuls of stuff in the sales to tide me over. I do not want anyone wearing a jaunty scarf and costume jewelry to tell me I'm wrong.

tethersend · 21/02/2014 14:59

House of Colour?

House of Cunts, more like.

Floisme · 21/02/2014 15:14

You see I feel more benignly disposed towards the likes of HoC than I do towards other elements of the image industry. You may disagree with the findings of a colour analyst and yes, some of it can be annoyingly jaunty but at least (for me anyway) it seems to be mostly about trying to help you feel good about yourself. The cosmetics industry, on the other hand, sets out to make us feel ugly and insecure and then gets rich by selling us one 'cure' after another that doesn't work. I don't know whether that makes sense - it's getting a bit deep for a Friday afternoon, isn't it? Grin

Flangeofmingetown · 21/02/2014 15:19

What really annoys me though is when you get a poster on here that asks for a steer colour wise. Now most people know what colours they like and what they feel comfortable wearing. From that if you have read up on this seasonal shite you can say ' well you sound like this category from your description' as a rough guide. Most people are happy with a rough guide, can look up the colour chart their favourite colours are in and use that to put a co-ordinating look together.

You then get a pile in from the colour analysts on here letting everyone know that only a drape will truly reveal your colours and it costs £100+.

I call bullshit on the doctrine according to House of C. There is no scientific evidence to support their guff.

plasticbanana · 21/02/2014 15:21

I'm actually quite tempted to have my colours analysed - maybe by the Zyla or SciArt systems, not by HoC. But the reason would be strictly for a diagnosis of my intrinsic colours, not for a prescription of what I should wear.

(As an analogy, it's the same reason I go to the GP - I only want to know what the problem is. I don't want their solutions and I'll find out my own ways to address the issues using hopefully healthier and more holistic systems. Hope that makes sense)

Nice to see you, Tethers. Grin

Checks scarf to ensure that it is not (Gods forbid) jaunty...

Flangeofmingetown · 21/02/2014 15:27

plastic you can do that online. You just upload a picture and all your colours are broken down into a paint swatch sort of thing. Print it off.

If you have access to a Mac on the photo booth there is an option that if you take a picture of your face it forms a spectrum of colour out of what colours you have naturally in your colouring. Print it off and voila -spend the money on other stuff. Grin

Flangeofmingetown · 21/02/2014 15:28

Fuck jaunty.

WallyBantersJunkBox · 21/02/2014 15:29

I am sniggering so much at this thread. I've worked in Retail Fashion buying for years and I've never understood this HOC bollocks.

I worked for a CEO who had hers done and then claimed that all middle aged women suit sludge colors and that is all they should wear. She made us put together a range based on this. It bombed.

However she conveniently forgot that it was her idea when reviewing the sell throughs of said "sewage range" Hmm

plasticbanana · 21/02/2014 15:30

Yes you're right Flange. Maybe I should just do that. Smile

Floisme · 21/02/2014 15:31

I agree with a lot of that, Flange but I still say the cosmetics industry is far worse. The colour analysis fee may or may not be a rip off but at least it's a one-off thing and they don't try and suck you into buying one product or treatment after another. I still don't quite understand the venom.

Flangeofmingetown · 21/02/2014 15:41

Wally now this is a bit of a shot in the dark but my money is on this not being about Per Una home of jaunty

Flangeofmingetown · 21/02/2014 15:42

Floisme it's an apples and pears comparison.

plasticbanana · 21/02/2014 15:43

I think some of the HoC consultants are not intrinsically stylish people. I'm sure some of them are but when I was looking for one and found some of their pictures it really put me off. There's no way I could take style advice from someone who looks like a stiffly formal office worker from the 1980s.

I assumed that they had found HoC through their own struggles with style rather than because of an innate talent that they wanted to share.

bigTillyMint · 21/02/2014 15:43

plasticbanana, I just googled zyla - I have to say a peek at the man himself doesn't fill me with confidence!

HavantGuard · 21/02/2014 15:44

Shock the horror of those lip colours

plasticbanana · 21/02/2014 15:47

Grin bigTilly I see what you mean.

Ballsballsballs · 21/02/2014 15:48

I've just uploaded my image Flange and the palette has come up with lilac and a lovely range of Bon Marche pastels.

Screw that.
