The Anti-Color Analysis Thread

FrugalFashionista · 21/02/2014 09:18

This is a safe space for anyone who
(tick any that apply)

  • wants to burn her scarves
  • will scream if someone goes semantic on 'Oyster'
  • does not want to be made to wear lipstick
  • is not looking forward to the next Kettlewell catalogue
  • does not identify with any particular season
  • will never ever do a style day
  • has self-diagnosed Stockholm syndrome
  • is tired of the tireless marketing drum of color analysis on S&B

I realize I may be endorsing an unpopular view but this thread here is for anyone who does not want to discuss color.

C'mon, am I the only one?
Raise your hand...

PS I will send a crappy lipstick personally chosen for me by a color analyst to the first taker. It's a shimmery peachy tone that has no staying power and streaks your teeth. But don't worry, it will make you look a million times better.

plastic you will instinctively know what colours you like. Just go with that.

I mentioned the photo booth thing as just a pointless exercise for fun really. It's all a bunch of bull.

passata · 21/02/2014 18:27

Seems a shame to call it a crock. I look fabulous and my wardrobe is totally co-ordinated post HoC Grin

santamarianovella · 21/02/2014 18:31

passata so is the wardrobe of many non HOC believers. Doing a style day doesn't magically transform you into a stylish person,

FrugalFashionista · 21/02/2014 18:48

No Plastic you are a Soft Summer Wink

plasticbanana · 21/02/2014 18:52

Thanks Frugal I'm sending you £110.

Bonsoir · 21/02/2014 18:55

Isn't colour analysis a bit like the diet industry? Lots of hocus pocus surrounding some very dubious science?

twopeasinapod · 21/02/2014 19:14

I agree re the diet industry, lots of money making spin. The cosmetic industry is even worse as it plays on women's insecurities. Increasing numbers of people are choosing to inject their skin with poison in an attempt to look younger. The creams sold by the cosmetic industry are marketed based on 'scientific' hogwash.
HOC isn't in the same league. It doesn't play on insecurities in the same way or aim to keep women coming back for more and more botox or whatever.
I'm really surprised at the need for an anti colour thread and the amount of vitriol that comes across in some people's posts. This is a frivolous topic, not a new drug to treat AIDS or a new surgical technique. There is no need for a RCT or over analysis. If it doesn't interest you there is no compulsion to have your colours done. A simple no thanks will do. No need to be so unpleasant (some posters) about something which has clearly been confidence boosting and helpful to many people on here.

Snowdown · 21/02/2014 19:27

I have recommended hoc of colours a handful of times to people who genuinely do not know where to start. It's all very well for people with a good eye for colour to know what colour suit them as well as shape style and everything else but some people are genuinely lost when it comes to dressing and often they don't want to even look fabulous they just want to look and feel good about themselves.
I did hoc analysis because I was curious, I've found it really useful, I'm not a slave to it but it has helped me hone my shopping skills and introduced me to colours I would never have considered wearing and actually really like....it has also introduced me to colours I have always hated and always will, they make me look ill, despite being in my palate. I think with all advice you need to know what to take and what to leave.

MrsCampbellBlack · 21/02/2014 19:30

Santa I think that's totally it re. stylishness. HOC doesn't make someone stylish. OK the colours 'may' look better but if its still a horrid dress it will be horrid in your colour.

And as to make up - not everyone suits bright colours and if you don't really enjoy bright lips, well you just look uncomfortable.

I also never get the theory that if you wear the right colours then people notice you rather than your clothes. Believe me, I always notice the clothes Wink

Tethers, as always I love you Smile

midnightinmoscow · 21/02/2014 19:33

I've never had my colours done - just doesn't really interest me despite my love of style, fashion. Etc.

However, you Frugal, intrigue me. Your need to start threads that demand a 'following'. What's that all about? Always feels like it's research fodder for a project...

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 21/02/2014 19:33

Yes to noticing the clothes!

MrsCampbellBlack · 21/02/2014 19:33

I think the 'anger' comes from on every thread where someone posts looking for help, a HOC consultation is recommended. It never used to be that way and for some of us its just a bit dull.

And I don't believe that for people who are interested in fashion/style it really is going to be a big revelation.

But if someone wants to spend 200 to be told they're a spring dramatic/gamine or whatever, that's entirely up to them.

MrsCampbellBlack · 21/02/2014 19:34

And why are my pound signs now always question marks??

EustaciaVye · 21/02/2014 19:40

I post on the Spring thread sometimes. I was 'done' by CMB a few years ago. It was a little treat, reaffirmed my own view of what suited me and what didnt. More useful to me was the style advice to complement my body shape, some of which I hadnt known as I wasnt such a prolific internet user then :)

Some of the HOC ideas seem odd. I wouldnt wear lipstick every day for example.
But it's just a guide isn't it. You can choose to take or leave the advice. A lot of people need some help with their confidence and if this helps then great.

I also see angst about getting the 'wrong' colour and I want to tell people to chill as it doesnt really matter, but something that one person feels insecure about can be shrugged off by others.

I hadnt noticed dominance of HoC experts on these threads, but then I am not offended by them so I wouldnt. And I have no problem with critiques of the ideology as it is a flawed system. I do have a problem if vulnerable people are exploited but I dont think Hoc are promising life transformation, just that they'll give you a guide to help you.

By all means criticise the process but perhaps try not to criticise some of the followers of the system though as I dont think that is deserved really, unless they are being critical of 'non-advocates'. We're all the same...just trying to feel good in what we wear, hence being on the s&b board.

ShotgunNotDoingThePans · 21/02/2014 19:43

I can't see what there is to merit all this anger (and yes, calling people cunts expresses anger imo; sniggering and congratulating the poster for saying it ditto.

We get thread after thread on here where someone wants advice with their skin/figure/diet, and umpteen posters leap in to extol the virtues of rip-off 'anti-aging' creams, Botox (how many here cough up for that on a regular basis?), extreme diets, tummy tucks and boob jobs.
I don't see anyone jumping in to slag off others's ways of wasting money choices.

ShotgunNotDoingThePans · 21/02/2014 19:45

Others' not others's obv Blush.

MrsCampbellBlack · 21/02/2014 19:46

Shotgun, people regularly slag off botox on here - I have it and for me its a way better investment than HOC/CMB.

But its all just personal opinion isn't it? I don't buy into HOC and do raise my eyebrows (well as much as I can) when its offered as the first step in becoming more stylish. But its a free world.

And at least no-one has suggested buying a bench instead yet.

bettykt · 21/02/2014 19:48

I have to admit when I first started reading S&B last year I was curious by HOC as it kept getting mentioned all the time. I looked at the HOC analyst closest to me and wasn't inspired.

Fast forward a few months and have thought about it and have decided it's not for me. I've looked a the colour ranges and I don't want rules about what colours to wear or not to wear. I like greys, all 50 shades of them Grin white, beige, black, navy etc I don't want any pop of colour, so yes I'm in.

*Disclaimer, I do understand that it has helped a lot of people put their outfits together more confidently but no, it's not for me thanks.

Aquelven · 21/02/2014 19:49

Well it's certainly been interesting reading this thread. The vitriol in some of the posts is an eye opener, why take it so personally & get so angry, no one is forced to read the colour threads after all. And please don't say there is no anger, not when someone described House of Colour as House of Cunts.

I was rather taken aback when the spring thread, a friendly group who actually like to share ideas after enjoying the day, was subjected to posts kindly telling us how we were all misguided, gullible fools so to speak.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 21/02/2014 19:52

I have never seen anybody on here recommend a boob job or tummy tuck. I know that a couple of people on here have Botox, but can't say I've ever seen them blathering on about it tbh.

My biggest bugbear with the colour stuff is that it all seems to be about 'right' and 'wrong' and my feeling is that if I want to wear a particular colour, I'll wear it, without feeling that I'm somehow not following the 'rules of rightness.'

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 21/02/2014 19:54

And I still can't see any anger. [Gets out deerstalker and magnifying glass].

Seriously, I doubt Frugal is doing this as a research project - its just her view which happens to be shared by a lot of others.

And its not the first time that HOC has been referred to as rather like a cult on here is it?

And tethers was clearly joking - lordy!

RonaldMcDonald · 21/02/2014 20:00

achturly I often bark botox at people but are happy to be shouted down

twopeasinapod · 21/02/2014 20:00

I'm quite sure that no one at HOC cares if you are following their 'rules of rightness.'You can wear whatever you like, no one cares.
Calling HOC 'cunts' is v angry and responding childishly with high fives is a bit teenage really.
