The Anti-Color Analysis Thread

This is a safe space for anyone who
(tick any that apply)

  • wants to burn her scarves
  • will scream if someone goes semantic on 'Oyster'
  • does not want to be made to wear lipstick
  • is not looking forward to the next Kettlewell catalogue
  • does not identify with any particular season
  • will never ever do a style day
  • has self-diagnosed Stockholm syndrome
  • is tired of the tireless marketing drum of color analysis on S&B

I realize I may be endorsing an unpopular view but this thread here is for anyone who does not want to discuss color.

C'mon, am I the only one?
Raise your hand...

PS I will send a crappy lipstick personally chosen for me by a color analyst to the first taker. It's a shimmery peachy tone that has no staying power and streaks your teeth. But don't worry, it will make you look a million times better.

I had mine done a long time ago, and the most useful thing I found is that I don't waste money on clothes in colours that don't suit me, and just end up sitting unworn in my wardrobe.
I still think you can be flexible and wear black, not one of my colours, as long as you wear it on the bottom, and definitely for evening, and use colours that suit you on top.

I have no interest in HOC!! I know what suits me and wear loads of colours. It's fab, nothing is off limits. I just have to like it! Hurrah for this thread

As others have said it's nice to have someone steer you in the right direction for you

You don't have to take the advice, I haven't used HOC or CMB. The lady I see works as an independent and I love the way she dresses and uses colours

They would look awful on me and I certainly wouldn't wear all the colours she suggests on me!! She also runs courses on capsule wardrobes, accessorising etc

I think it does matter what your style is and what size you are

She has just 'redone' me and I am now a bright winter/spring...but it does mean that charcoal is back !!!! (Not that I ever stopped wearing it!!)

''It's just a problem if you want to claim that judgements about what colour flatters a particular skin tone, or what colours look nice together are anything more than a matter of taste. Or that taste is somehow unchanging. Colours that we now think of as hideous together, have been considered a wonderful combination in the past (and may well be again). And the combinations we think of as tasteful now will be thought of as hideous in the future.''

Taste is involved, I meant when some of my friend's went through their 'goth' phase they didn't want to look glowing or harmonised! That is an extreme example, but you know what I mean. They would have been delighted if people were worried about them and asked if they were ill Wink. Not sure about fashion though when it comes to what really suits your colouring. I have a handful of shades that I do notice flatter me, and they have pretty much been the same since childhood. Sometimes they are in the shops, sometimes not.

I think if I went to HOC I'd be wanting to find out if their were any other shades with a similar effect that I haven't found as I don't have 144 drapes that I can compare in an organised way. I wouldn't feel the need to wear them all the time or always look harmonised, but I'd like to know as I don't think you necessarily stumble across them.

Sorry, that top bit was meant to be italicised/quote Blush

£200+ for someone to tell me what colours look good on me? Nah, I've got a mirror and I like what I like...and if I like it, it looks good. End of.

Also, no matter what I will never wear two colours: red or grey. I hate them. Let's move on.

Now. I want to talk about dresses.

Well I love lipstick (as I love most make up). I have not had my colours done but know I would look shit in pastels. I have darkish brown hair, a fairish complexion (but have high colouring due to high blood pressure). I think I have a warmish skin tone but not sure as a Lancome lady put a 'Lys Rose' foundation on me. It looks alright I think but I normally use a warmish ivory or light beige.

Anyway, I hate most Autumn colours - anything rusty would be completely out. I can wear most reds I think (not orangey ones) but any orange browns would look vile as well as powdery colours (well I hope so cos I hate them). I love maroon but I think this may be a no no. I remember at school it just highlighted my spots. I love greeny blues and also navy and grey. I am trying not to live in black and do feel navy is more me.

If I went to have my colours done and they insisted on pastels or pumpkin colours, then there would be a lot of blood spilt and it would not be mine!!!
