The Anti-Color Analysis Thread

FrugalFashionista · 21/02/2014 09:18

This is a safe space for anyone who
(tick any that apply)

  • wants to burn her scarves
  • will scream if someone goes semantic on 'Oyster'
  • does not want to be made to wear lipstick
  • is not looking forward to the next Kettlewell catalogue
  • does not identify with any particular season
  • will never ever do a style day
  • has self-diagnosed Stockholm syndrome
  • is tired of the tireless marketing drum of color analysis on S&B

I realize I may be endorsing an unpopular view but this thread here is for anyone who does not want to discuss color.

C'mon, am I the only one?
Raise your hand...

PS I will send a crappy lipstick personally chosen for me by a color analyst to the first taker. It's a shimmery peachy tone that has no staying power and streaks your teeth. But don't worry, it will make you look a million times better.

I know someone who does something similar freelance She loves 'perky' Lots depends on how much sleep I have had if I am wearing make up or have a bit of colour etc

Floisme · 21/02/2014 11:56

Sadly, I think I'm out as I'd rather look perky than terrible.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 21/02/2014 11:57

Is there no in between then, Flo?

noddyholder · 21/02/2014 11:59

It is only in the consultants eyes though Just because she says terrible doesn't mean you think it! My mate who does it says I am supposed to suit greens ambers autumn colours but I would never wear as I think they look 'old' on me. I am head to toe black today and am 49 this year I looked terrible in black in my early 40s but can wear it again now. A colour consultant may not like how it makes me look but I do

FrugalFashionista · 21/02/2014 12:00

Some copy for you ladies

"Color Me Beautiful advocates a bold approach to colour, adding splashes of interest with scarves and costume jewellery"

If this ticks your boxes, book a consultation now...

It would seem not, Remus. No room for half measures on Style and Beauty!

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 21/02/2014 12:02

Okay. I'll go with terrible then. :)

Ardiente · 21/02/2014 12:02

I wish I could join in, and claim independence from the hoc diktats... However... Since having my colours done, DH pays me tons of compliments & my wardrobe is a lot more coordinated and interesting. HoC does work if like me you don't know to plan your wardrobe and you don't know which colours work together. Prior to the analysis, my outfits were a case of potluck + a lot of black trousers and jeans. Now it is infinitely more interesting. I agree that scarves are not the answer to everything and Kettlewell is pretty unbearable. But I will give credit where it is due ;-) Sorry and good luck with your mutiny :-D

Ardiente · 21/02/2014 12:04

Last time I pipe up: my shopping these days is a hit and run job, which is exactly how I like it!

FrugalFashionista · 21/02/2014 12:10

Floisme inviting you to stay - people here don't have to agree about color...

Colors have a lot of functions in our life.
I look terrible in orange and that color in plastic chairs depresses me even if it's tone on tone with everything else.
But we all see and perceive colors a bit differently...
We use colors for self-expression in a variety of ways and I don't believe color analysts should be allowed to monopolize the conversation on color.

Noddy totally agree with you about autumn colors and looking old (my Summer colors make me look drab and faded).
Remus you seem true to your style and that's always fantastic - I've always felt a conflict between my personality and the idea of having to be 'muted'...

I don't wear lipstick. Every time I wear it I look like I'm playing dress up.

My eyes are very obvious and even with a teeny lick of mascara they look huge and defined, a bit like a goat (not fucking Bambi)

So if I then add lipstick I look like I'm making the big mistake of playing up eyes and lips.

Luckily my lips are a rosyish pink so I just wear lip salve and still look human.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 21/02/2014 12:13

I have become a recent lipstick convert tbh - bright red. And I do like some colours (bought a bright pink skirt yesterday & have been on the look out for a bright yellow one for ages) but prefer them away from my face/chest.

Floisme · 21/02/2014 12:24

Thanks, Frugal I may hang around!
I do agree with you on this: I don't believe color analysts should be allowed to monopolize the conversation on color. And, as I've said, I haven't had my colours done and don't plan to. But I don't see the harm in it either and, if I was made to choose, I'd rather see someone in a jaunty scarf than black trousers and a coloured top Smile

FrugalFashionista · 21/02/2014 12:56

Thanks all for the lively conversation and great opinions - it's great for once to have differing points of view. This is what I love about MN!

Wanted just to give you this classic quote from Bridget Jones:

Mother: "Hello, darling," she trilled. "Just on my way to Debenhams and I know you always come in here for your breakfast. Thought I'd pop in and see when you want your colors done. Ooh I fancy a cup of coffee. Do you think they'll warm up the milk?"

Bridget: "Mum, I've told you I don't want my colors done," I muttered, scarlet, as people stared and a sulky, rushed-off-her-feet waitress bustled up.

Mother: "Oh don't be such a stick-in-the-mud, darling. You need to make a statement about yourself! Not sitting on the fence all the time in all these fudges and slurries. Oh, hello, dear."

This time, I'm with Bridget Wink

No, Amber - Bridget's mum - an icon for the masses Wink
Disclaimer - Bridget was a cool older girl when I was very young...

Oh Thank God. I have just come back from another lipstick shopping trip where I tried a hundred things and not one of them made me look even sane, let alone better. I thought it was just me.

I have tried to self diagnose colours using those websties and found it utterly hopeless. I fit nowhere, except maybe several places where I don't like the colours.

In my person I am a very bright color scheme to myself, being blue, white and orange (see profile pic if you don't beliveve me). I have ever seen aything that seems to take account of the fact, for example, that I cannot wear most patterns or colour blocks etc because of this.

I do like wearing a scarf sometimes, but I promise I very rarely try to look jaunty.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 21/02/2014 14:13

LaTrucha - you look just like my baby sister! Grin On reflection, I don't think I have ever seen her in lipstick, but I know she likes Juicy Tubes glosses.

Cheesyslice · 21/02/2014 14:14

Oh I'm so anti colour. EVERYTHING I OWN IS BLACK

However, I do wear scarves. Sorry. Am I still allowed in?

LaTrucha · 21/02/2014 14:15

I have one of those! (looks behind to check I still only have two older brothers)

DoneWithStruggling · 21/02/2014 14:18

I am so crap with clothes and often come close to "getting done" (which sounds like something you'd do to at the vets to an overexcitable boy-pup). What puts me off is that the consultants all look dreadful and my concern is that they will try to make me wear garish colours and overly-bright lipstick and I'll look like a hag. So I stick with black, which at least matches the rest of the black clothes I own.

LaTrucha · 21/02/2014 14:18

I don't usually wear black anymore though.

bigTillyMint · 21/02/2014 14:25

I keep thinking I should try getting my colours done, but I am worried that they will tell me that half of what I own doesn't suit me. I like strong colours and black and I don't want to give them up. I know that yellowy/orangey/beige colours really don't suit me, so I avoid them.

And I don't really wear lipstick. Just a slick of natural looking colour/gloss on occasion.

Flangeofmingetown · 21/02/2014 14:32

Frugal I love what you wrote on the HOC Spring thread. Marvellous, INTELLIGENT argument.

I love black and will wear what I damn well please. You're right it's all a load of shite and definitely pushed too much on here.

TulipOHare · 21/02/2014 14:36

I've never had them done, and will never pay money to have someone tell me what colours suit me, but think there is something in it. I realised recently that I look brilliant in dark blue. I just look sort of brighter and better Grin. On the other hand, I once ordered (on some perverse and inexplicable whim) a canary yellow sweater. Tried it on and almost threw up I looked so vile Shock

Then there is brown, my beloved brown, with its shades of fudge and bitter chocolate and mocha ... marl jersey tops, austere wool, kitteny cashmere...I love brown and you will have to pry it out of my cold, dead hands even though it doesn't really do much for me Grin
