Anyone 50 plus out there? How do you dress?

Just wondering what you wear when in this age group? I tend to wear pretty much what I'd wear if I were 20 years younger. I don't work in an office any more, so don't have the problem of having to dress formally.

What do you lot all wear?

Bonnie I don't want to prolong this discussion further other than come back on your last point- because it's all off topic and will annoy other posters.

I am the last person who swallows what is in the press etc wholesale without using my brain or doing my own research. That is why I agree with you. BUT- the reason I challenged ( not 'had a go') was because if people make very adamant statements about something which fly in the face of accepted and expert advice, then I want to read the evidence.

My own very quick google on sunscreens revealed one piece of research which was not saying what the posters here said at all. For starters, the feature said the evidence was inconclusive- and the chemicals in questions included retinol derivatives - which are highly likely to affect the skin adversely when used as a sunscreen as retinols/ retinoids are prescription-only drugs which can damage DNA.

So it's far more complex than just saying sunscreens cause cancer. That is NOT what the evidence showed- it was inconclusive- and it was only some chemicals that are used in some products that may be an issue.

Jaffacakesallround · 22/01/2014 15:22

Bonnie I forgot- senior moment:)
I said Milly's opinion of Cancer Research.org was despicable. Condemning an organisation that does a huge amount of good and saying it existed purely of its own ends and to line the pockets of people who run it is a bit much ( and I think their legal team would be pretty annoyed if they read this on a public forum!!)

Bonniebach · 22/01/2014 15:39

Does believing in God when there is no scientific proof mean that he doesn't exist?

Jaffacakesallround · 22/01/2014 15:41

Believing in God is a faith.
That is what faith means- belief without evidence.

Sunscreens are not Gods or a faith.

Bonniebach · 22/01/2014 15:47

So faith is the word you use when referring to the complete lack of scientific proof that God exists.

Bonniebach · 22/01/2014 15:55

I think that you have been rather victimising in your treatment of Milly these last couple of pages even though there have been others who have said the same as her.

Im very sorry this thread was derailed as I had enjoyed reading it.

HeadFullofSteam · 22/01/2014 16:26

FFS thought this was going to be a nice easy going thread about what we seniors all wear!

Awks · 22/01/2014 16:47

Glad to see us "older ladies" aren't imune to a bit of playgroundy sniping either :)

Anyway back on topic. I am 50 next year and aren't exactly thrilled by that, but it is what it is. I like my life but don't like what I see in the mirror. However I put a bit of effort in with my skin, hair and face and do the best I can with it.

But clothes are a different subject. I wish I could find a shop that I liked as it's so disheartening trudging round the high street. Currently I am cold all the time (perimenopausal) so the thought of stripping off my million layers means shopping holds no appeal at all.

I healf heartedly look on Asos and order the odd thing but it's such a trial.

I am living in skinny jeans, vest, long sleeved top, shirt, jumper and anything else I can pile on to keep warm.

Roll on summer.

GeorginaWorsley · 22/01/2014 20:50

Oh dear.
Just caught up with this thread, which has become somewhat derailed.
I think the best way to look great at any age is to enjoy life, laugh a lot and drink wine .Grin

Fletcherl · 22/01/2014 21:58

Going for birthday drinks Friday what kind of thing do you wear to go out with friends?

Floisme · 23/01/2014 07:21

Well did I miss anything? Grin

What sort of place are you going to for drinks, Fletcherl? Is it the dreaded smart-casual? In the past I would have reached for jeans and a fancy top but I'm a bit tired of that plus jeans don't do me any favours any more (or at least skiinnies don't) and my arms aren't what they used to be either. So instead I think I would start with something quite smart, like a dress and then look for ways to rough it up a bit e.g. with opaques and .... you know what's coming don't you?....Yay, biker boots!! Or a leather jacket. (But not both.) I'm still experimenting though so any suggestions welcome.

How about anyone else?

Me too. Skinnies, boots, tunic or vest plus biker jacket or similar over top. Plus bling, scarf, nice bag.

By the way, is wearing white in middle life still not the done thing?

I'm well over 50, but tend to wear clothes that are probably designed with younger women in mind. I go to a Personal Shopper at John Lewis 2 or 3 times a year and give her a "free hand" to suggest styles which suit. So if she thinks it works, then that's good enough for me. I'm simply not ready for twin-sets yet!! :)

Bearleigh · 23/01/2014 13:54

Fedup - I have a white pencil skirt for summer and love it.

seasalt · 23/01/2014 14:25

Rachel you look very handsome Grin

Floisme · 23/01/2014 14:57

Ooher I didn't know we weren't allowed white either Grin Having said that, it's a colour I never wear but that's because a) I look shocking in it (it's as bad on me as black) and b) I'd only spill something down it. I do think colour is important and I've noticed that anything really bright or dramatic completely washes me out these days.

Rachel you look so good in that photo! Do you mind me asking, is that your everyday style? And does the personal shopper often suggest styles you haven't tried before?

rachelmonday1 · 23/01/2014 15:31

Thankyou Seasalt :)

Floisme: Thankyou for the compliment. No. it's not my "everyday" style as I'm actually a man! (I think Seasalt may have realised). I don't wear womens clothes every day, but that dress is one that I wear out in the evenings. My point really is that if I, as a man, can wear feminine styles designed for women much younger than me, then you girls shouldn't have any concerns at all about wearing whatever you like! I simply tell the Personal Shopper whether I would like a new "daytime", "casual evening" or "party" look and she just does the rest. I'd highly recommend their service.

This pic is more "daytime" :)

Floisme · 23/01/2014 15:36

I hadn't twigged at all Rachel but I wish I had your legs! Smile

rachelmonday1 · 23/01/2014 15:55

Lolol......well thankyou, but I hope I've made my point :)

Floisme · 23/01/2014 16:24

I really hate it when people are made to feel they cannot wear clothes that they like, whether that is because of their age or their gender. So yes, I can see where you are coming from.

rachelmonday1 · 23/01/2014 16:28

I totally agree Floisme and I hope that this helps answer the OPs question :)

HeadFullofSteam · 23/01/2014 18:07

I have seen you on MN before rachel so was aware, but totally agree with Floisme's comment about your legs. Wowsers!

I have to say that I probably wouldn't wear white now apart from a classic white shirt under a cardigan/dress, but that is partly as I am a clumsy mare who always spills food and drink down my frontage. In fact, I often steer clear of paler colours for that very reason.
