Anyone 50 plus out there? How do you dress?

fedupandfifty · 19/01/2014 17:38

Just wondering what you wear when in this age group? I tend to wear pretty much what I'd wear if I were 20 years younger. I don't work in an office any more, so don't have the problem of having to dress formally.

What do you lot all wear?

But why do you let it make you feel unattractive?

DrNick · 20/01/2014 08:30

because i have wrinkles and dull skin.
I dont think that is an earth shatteringly novel idea

DrNick · 20/01/2014 08:31

and no i dont find people liek flippen Lulu attractive. Or whoever the media drag up to argue that forty or fifty is fabulous.
Its not
you are near death and worry about pensions all the time

Floisme · 20/01/2014 08:37

Totally agree about Lulu - she's one of the reasons why I would never consider cosmetic surgery. And no, being nearer to death isn't nice - although it does kind of concentrate the mind which isn't a bad thing.

But why let wrinkles make you feel unattractive?

DrNick · 20/01/2014 08:37

because i look better without them
sheesh!

You wont reeducate me Grin

Floisme · 20/01/2014 08:45
Grin
MillyRules · 20/01/2014 08:46

Getting older is good surely, at least your alive.

Floisme · 20/01/2014 08:47

Anyway if you think wrinkles are bad, just wait till you get jowls Grin

DrNick · 20/01/2014 08:49

" at least you're alive"

weeps

Aquelven · 20/01/2014 08:57

Well it's better than the only other alternative. Lots of people never get the chance to get older.

Chlorinella · 20/01/2014 08:57

I'm 53 , and I have spent my winter in a black cowl neck jumper ( I have more than 1 ) a knee length skirt , opaque tights and black knee length boots .
I sometimes wear jeans . Don't like them much though .
I'm getting bored with my look and need a boost.
Might get my colours done ...

Countrywalks · 20/01/2014 08:57

Ha ha a few years and I'm your club too!
I have laughed out loud this morning , thanks guys!

We can only be the best we can at any age ( just started healthy eating plan as have ruined entire forties so far being overweight !) I would too prefer to be wrinkle free but judging on the gorgeous teens I talk to , they have no confidence in their beauty and slim bodies at all , so sad !

DrNick · 20/01/2014 09:02

im 43
i am watching keenly

Countrywalks · 20/01/2014 09:03

To the point

Wear jeggings skinny jeans long boots converse now love love dresses with opaques in winter and fitflops ( I know) in summer, oh and scruffy dog walking clothes. Now that's liberating not worrying at all and even going out without makeup ( eek!) after years of mother saying put a bit of lipstick on dear , it looks better!

Floisme · 20/01/2014 09:04

Cheer up Dr Nick Just think, when you're 50, I'll be 64 Grin

Bonsoir · 20/01/2014 09:12

You need to rethink your skincare when you get older. This is really important and makes a massive difference. And you probably need to change your haircut and colour at some point, and that also means changing the colour of your clothes.

Floisme · 20/01/2014 09:20

Yes, although I rage against a lot of the age related nonsense, I do think that black starts to look shite once you're over 50, even if it suited you before. I think it's because your colouring changes so, instead of looking dramatic, it just washes you out.

Right I need to get some work done - if I get sacked at my time of life, I'm screwed! Please keep this thread going, it's really interesting.

HeadFullofSteam · 20/01/2014 09:32

So what are all you over 50's wearing today?

I am working from home today, and am wearing blue/black relaxed skinny jeans, a long navy vest, and a navy thin jumper with white swallows all over it. Comfy, but okay enough to go out to the shops in later. That said, I haven't washed my hair this morning and it is looking a bit mad!

Floisme · 20/01/2014 09:44

I'm working at home too - well supposed to be, this is def my last post for a bit. I'm in:

Top shop tube skirt - not such a great buy as it's bobbling quite badly
Uniqlo cashmere V neck
Fleecy tights - can't remember where they're from but probably TK Maxx
And, just for you Dr Nick Grin biker boots, also from the Maxx

noddyholder · 20/01/2014 09:50

I am 48 I don't work in a dress up environment so day to day I wear skinnies with blouses/tops big cashmere jumpers nice boots I hate looking old but don't mind being old iykwim. I have undone no style hair I think a do is ageing. I am very strict with skin and not over doing make up eg eye shadow I never wear and have converted most of my mates, take it off and wear more mascara looks younger somehow. Botox I used to hae twice a year now have it once nothing beats it for radical change. I have toned everything down a bit but am still me.

noddyholder · 20/01/2014 09:51

I started looking bad in black at about 42 but can wear again now which is odd!

MelanieCheeks · 20/01/2014 09:56

I'm in brick red ankle boots, indigo linen trousers, turquoise T shirt with a dusky pink V-neck cardi over that, a dusky aubergine leaher jacket and a scarf with cream, piink and blue in it.

I rarely wear make-up - maybe a slick of Revlon lip butter. But I use a serum and moisturiser every morning. My hair is short and I wash it every day. Helen Mirren and Judi Dench are my role models Smile

teta · 20/01/2014 10:12

I'm 50 in February so can I be an honary member of this thread?I don't feel old at all.Of course I may not have a choice as I had 3 dc's in my 40's. I can't really go round dressing like an old lady as I would embarrass my kids(and the girls seem to copy me subliminally).I also look 10 years younger due to slight chubbiness, use of sunscreen, exercise ( and genes).
I've just bought a few things in the Me and Em sale and been very happy with them. They're well made with good quality materials and look suitably grown up.Otherwise I swear by a really nice coat,Duo boots,Cashmere scarf.Love Me and Em Beanies and Fitflop boots/flip flops for walking.
Wearing today - Stefanel forest green cashmere v neck (Tk Maxx) over very long black vest and leggings(from Matalan),black boots green/orange cashmere scarf.

MillyRules · 20/01/2014 11:07

I find I can still wear black but then im a very light honey blond with green eyes, warm skin and freckles so dark colours do suit me but im careful not to wear them too close to the face. I always try to have a lower or v neck so there is a bit of skin showing.

Noddy I agree with regards to eyeshadow. I have recently stopped wearing it. I now put a dark brown eyeliner on the inner upper eyeline under the eyelashes if you know what i mean and the lower eyeline. Just a soft brown mind you . Then use eyelash curlers and a good black mascara. The effect is what I get when I have had my eyelashes dyed in the past as the eyeliner sort of sinks in. No eyeshadow, bit of blusher and barely there lipgloss.

Today I am wearing dark blue skinnies tucked into knee high brown suede boots, long blue vest top and White Stuff cashmere angora navy blue very loose jumper with cowl neck. Hair is washed and in a messy short bob.

MillyRules · 20/01/2014 11:10

By the way, my Husband prefers older women, he always has. He says they look after themselves better and look amazing and have so much more confidence than younger women. Hes not alone either. A lot of men seem to think this.
