Anyone 50 plus out there? How do you dress?

fedupandfifty · 19/01/2014 17:38

Just wondering what you wear when in this age group? I tend to wear pretty much what I'd wear if I were 20 years younger. I don't work in an office any more, so don't have the problem of having to dress formally.

What do you lot all wear?

Olddear....Im sorry that you are not enjoying your fifties. But as you can see from the majority of us, we love it. Didn't think we would and no one is more surprised than me that its actually ok to be 50 something. As others have said, people think I am in my late thirties. I don't do anything particular, have always eaten loads of fruit and veg, grew up in Australia, don't use any special face creams nor do I bother taking makeup off at night most the time Shock. I don't do "eyebrows" as this new fashion for drawn on heavy eyebrows that look unnatural (not that everyones do look unnatural ) make me snigger....sorry!!!
I like my face more now than I did when I was younger. I still get chatted up and told im pretty.

To be perfectly frank here Old be careful what you wish for. Getting older is good because the alternative is being dead.

fedupandfifty · 21/01/2014 15:27

I'm wearing biker boots! Am I mutton? They cost a bomb, too, by my (tightarsed) standards. Red or Dead!

Milly I've never taken my makeup off either. Thought I was the only one..

One of the nicer things about getting older for me is not giving a stuff about fitting in.

I guess we are very slutty then fedup lol!!!

Jaffacakesallround · 21/01/2014 16:33

I am over 50 and live in trousers- skinnyish jeans ( more like tapered straight than sprayed on) and various boots- ankle and knee highs, and some smart trousers- wool crops- but hardly ever wear smart. On top I'll wear a smartish top or a chunky jumper- cashmere or whatever.

Dresses- tend to wear jumper dresses/ tunics in plain colours over leggings or very thick tights, with knee boots. Scarves and beads.

In summer I tend to wear fitted knee length shift style dresses but prefer a little cropped cardi as my upper arms are not toned.

I went through the 'wilderness years'- re. fashion in my 30s and 40s- too busy with kids, but now feel I've got it right- some of the time anyway- and my weight is within 5lbs of what it was in my 20s.

I like nice coats, bags and boots and feel that these can make even casual jeans or dresses look quite nice.

I never ever wear anything below the knee- coats or dresses- as I think they are ageing and don't suit me as I'm not very tall.

MillyRules · 21/01/2014 16:33

I don't think anything is mutton about bikers. These are mine.

Anyone 50 plus out there? How do you dress?
MillyRules · 21/01/2014 16:36

Jaffa I agree about the wilderness years when bringing up kids. I look back and realise that I completely lost myself.

I do wear below the knee skirts and dresses as im very tall and anything above the knee looks weird on me and out of proportion.

Jaffacakesallround · 21/01/2014 16:37

Oldear all those things you hate so much can be got rid of- weight, lines, veins and flab. Broken veins on legs are not too expensive to remove. If you really are unhappy then some gentle fillers can smooth out the wrinkles, and exercises can tone you up. I'm not suggesting that you want to do any of these, but there are solutions if you do!

Jaffacakesallround · 21/01/2014 16:38

Like the boots MIlly I have 2 pairs quite similar as well as black riding style with buckles at top and heel - more dressy than the ones you linked.

MillyRules · 21/01/2014 16:41

My daughter wears these ones too. Shes 23 . I think they suite all ages if you wear them well.

MillyRules · 21/01/2014 16:42

Thank you Jaffa

Jaffacakesallround · 21/01/2014 16:49

When you are older it's all about 'grooming'.

There are some very old women who have lots of wrinkles- Judi Dench?- but they glow because they love life and make the best of what they have!

By the time you are 50 your face reflects your life- if you have never used sun block - not just in summer- drank, smoked and not eaten a healthy diet for the last 20 years, never exercise or get fresh air, it will show on your face.

If you are miserable and have no interest in life, learning new things or taking joy in simple pleasures, your face will show it.

Almost every woman over 50 looks better with a bit of subtle up to date make up, good hair cut, coloured a bit if necessary, and a tiny bit of Botox or similar if lines are a big problem to you.

Lecture over.

WHEN I AM AN OLD WOMAN I SHALL WEAR PURPLE

With a red hat which doesn't go, and doesn't suit me.
And I shall spend my pension on brandy and summer gloves
And satin sandals, and say we've no money for butter.
I shall sit down on the pavement when I'm tired
And gobble up samples in shops and press alarm bells
And run my stick along the public railings
And make up for the sobriety of my youth.
I shall go out in my slippers in the rain
And pick the flowers in other people's gardens
And learn to spit

You can wear terrible shirts and grow more fat
And eat three pounds of sausages at a go
Or only bread and pickle for a week
And hoard pens and pencils and beermats and things in boxes

But now we must have clothes that keep us dry
And pay our rent and not swear in the street
And set a good example for the children.
We must have friends to dinner and read the papers.

But maybe I ought to practice a little now?
So people who know me are not too shocked and surprised
When suddenly I am old, and start to wear purple.

Jaffacakesallround · 21/01/2014 17:12

you should at least credit the poet who wrote it. :) copyright and all that!

Jaffacakesallround · 21/01/2014 17:13

It's Jenny Joseph if you don't know.

amothersplaceisinthewrong · 21/01/2014 17:16

I am 54 and like tailored and fitted clothes, nothing flowing or baggy

Wear pencil skirt suits and high heels for work, I LOVE heels, always have.

Out of work wear either skinnies tucked into long boots with a jumper or cardigan, or bootcut with pistol boots.

Fitted dresses for very smart.

I always wear make up, and have grown my hair to just past shoulders - IMO a big mistake is too have your hair too short as you get older.

I watch my weight and swim 5 times a week to keep fit. Nothing more ageing and tummy fat. I

HeadFullofSteam · 21/01/2014 17:25

Oops - it is Warning by Jenny Joseph. My 75 year old mum always quotes it (though I have never yet seen her in purple!)

The 'look' I hate on older women is that they dress like their partners- old fashioned jeans, a fleece, no make up, and very short hair usually grey or salt and pepper.

They may as well wear a sign saying 'I gave up ages ago.'

MillyRules · 21/01/2014 17:53

Jaffa I have to say that I don't agree with everything you have said there about things showing on your face. I don't use sunblock as there is a lot of controversy regarding its safety. I have enjoyed my life and enjoyed drinking and socialising. I have smoked some when younger.
But I have always eaten well, meat and veg and fruit. Lots of fats and oils and don't eat sweetners or low fat anything. Enjoy cakes when I want them, in fact eat anything as long as im hungry.
I have always had a smile on my face my whole life and looked on the positive side and glass half full and always looked to make myself happy.
I don't have many lines at all despite a lifetime of squinting in the Australian sun and my skin is lovely. I think attitude is everything.

RockMummy · 21/01/2014 18:30

Sleep is invaluable too, something which the menopause seems to play havoc with! My 10 year old is an early riser too

futterbingers · 21/01/2014 18:43

Milly I agree totally that its all about attitude. I work with a woman who is 5 years younger than me but she is so miserable, she looks way older. And I've heard her refer to a co-worker (53yoa) as mutton when said co-worker was rocking a short skirt with thick tights and boots. She herself favours Per Una-type matching tops and longish full skirts... Gawd I hope I never dress like her, even if I live to 100!

MelanieCheeks · 21/01/2014 18:47

See, I never thought I was pretty. So I don't really care about losing what looks I never valued.

MillyRules · 21/01/2014 19:07

O Yes....sleep sleep and more sleep. I love sleeping. Can do it easily for 12 hours straight and I definitely think it keeps you young as it repairs everything while you sleep.

Jaffacakesallround · 21/01/2014 19:10

Milly point me in the direction of scientific research that shows sunblock on your face is bad for you.

In view of the huge rise in melanomas I don't know how you can say this. Really.

Most sun block ( or good ones) are zinc oxide, not chemicals.
90% of ageing- lines and dark spots- is sun damage.

If though you mean that using sun block over every bit of your body all the time is bad- cutting out any sunlight and Vitamin D production- then yes, that's true it can be harmful.

But using a sunscreen on your face is the ONE thing suggested by all dermatologists.

MillyRules · 21/01/2014 19:31

Sorry I was referring to chemical sunscreen not sunblock containing zinc oxide though it is now advised to make sure your zinc oxide contains larger non nano particles not small ones. Personally, I try not to actually sunbath and don't sit in the sun in the hottest time of the day.
