Anyone 50 plus out there? How do you dress?

fedupandfifty · 19/01/2014 17:38

Just wondering what you wear when in this age group? I tend to wear pretty much what I'd wear if I were 20 years younger. I don't work in an office any more, so don't have the problem of having to dress formally.

What do you lot all wear?

Am pretty sure there have been health scares about the amount of lipstick we ingest too- every time you lick your lips- there was a report about how much of the stuff we actually 'ate' in a lifetime!

MillyRules · 22/01/2014 07:48

Wow Jaffa you really buy into all the misinformation and spin dont you. With your belief system about dying either because off cancer or heart disease, is there much point going on? Smile

Bonsoir · 22/01/2014 07:52

I have extremely fair skin, as does all my family bar DSS1. We stay out of the sun as much as possible and save lots of money by never even contemplating winter sun holidays in expensive far flung resorts!

MillyRules · 22/01/2014 07:53

Floisme your outfit sounds lovely.Grin

Jaffacakesallround · 22/01/2014 07:56

Milly- are you always so rude and patronising?

I'm not quoting spin I'm quoting facts- look at the Cancer Research charity website if you don't want to believe me. There is masses of real evidence that lifestyle causes cancer- 40% of colon cancer is attributed to lifestyle, and the rise in breast cancer is blamed at women drinking more and being overweight.

This piece gives a summary of cancer-sunscreen debate though it's the popular press- hardly the Lancet.

It says the evidence is conflicting.

It also blames parabens for possible cancer trigger. So not zinc oxide, which is the main ingredient in the facial stuff I use.

If you want to avoid parabens then you have to do that right across all cosmetics and shampoos, shower stuff- the whole lot- which I do already anyway.

The Cancer Research Org is deeply flawed and a huge money making machine that continues to perpetuate a lot of falsehoods regarding cancer. The big bosses behind it make huge amounts of money and still have no answers.
I have not been rude though.....if I have by your reckoning then so have you.Smile

MillyRules · 22/01/2014 08:14

Anyway everyone has their own opinions. I'm getting back to the lovely subject at hand.

Floisme · 22/01/2014 08:19

Fedupandfifty thank you for the lipstick tips, I shall give them a try.

Off to work now so cannot join in any further. Peace and love everybody Smile

MillyRules · 22/01/2014 08:20

Peace and Love!! lol
Have a good day.Smile

MillyRules · 22/01/2014 08:22

I love using coconut oil on my lips, really keeps them smooth.

Jaffacakesallround · 22/01/2014 08:32

so where exactly do you go for unbiased information Milly?

If you want to make statements like this
The Cancer Research Org is deeply flawed and a huge money making machine that continues to perpetuate a lot of falsehoods regarding cancer

then you really have to justify them. Are you an expert researcher yourself?

I can see why you've chosen your user name BTW :)

RescueCack · 22/01/2014 09:11

Jaffa, lots of people don't buy into the medical parlance re. cancer research. Cancer Research as an organisation has a vested interest in never finding a 'cure' - it would no longer need to exist! Milly's views aren't unusual.

teta · 22/01/2014 09:56

Why would a Cancer Research organisation have a vested interest in peddling misinformation?Secondly there is no 'cure' for cancer .There is a multiplicity of causes varying from your DNA to lifestyle.Current knowledge changes all the time and scientists don't always get it right.Having worked in a Cancer hospital in research many years ago, sponsorship from these organisations is essential to research further treatments.
Rates of skin cancer in Australia have dramatically reduced with the Slip Slap Slop motto and therefore using a sunscreen is still better than not using one.

Bonsoir · 22/01/2014 10:41

Rates of skin cancer in Australia have dramatically reduced with the Slip Slap Slop motto and therefore using a sunscreen is still better than not using one.

Northern Europe is not Australia and the relative risks of sun exposure versus sunscreen use are entirely different.

Jaffacakesallround · 22/01/2014 10:44

This is getting slightly off topic and I apologise for that, but a close member of my family ( 2 in fact) worked on medical research into cancer and their research and salary was funded by Cancer Research. I'm sorry and don't want to create bad feeling here, but I think it's despicable to peddle such a cynical view of a major charity which does a lot of good.

HelloBoys · 22/01/2014 11:15

My mum a youthful 70 (can pass for 55) wears clothes from:-

Uniqlo (heat-tech).
Phase Eight stretch tops
jeans from Gap
Zara blazer in aqua
2 gorgeous H&M jumpers recently nice colors 1 in sale

I tend to buy her stuff (as a treat) but also for a change. she suits colours (blues, pinks, not too pale) and tans well.

Her friend about 5-10 years older happily shops anywhere from Top Shop, Oasis etc (despite being a lot richer) but she can get away with neon flashes of color, interesting accessories etc.

MillyRules · 22/01/2014 11:24

Hello Your Mum sounds amazing. I work in fashion and its lovely to see all the older ladies who look so much younger with their youthful outlooks and stylish clothes sense.

HelloBoys · 22/01/2014 12:33

Milly - I hate to say it but it's all about colours and styles that work for you and if you haven't found it at an older age I don't think you WILL find it...

she has never needed a colour consultation but knows what jewellery colors suit her.

she will be in Next (not now) or Top Shop though and see a top/shirt that she knows the style/colours will suit her.

she and her other friends do complain about a lack of clothes with longer or 3/4 length sleeves so maybe that is something for you to feed back into your fashion world! Smile They have money to spend just need the right styles!

HelloBoys · 22/01/2014 12:37

why do you all feel you need to rethink your skin care at a certain age?

my mum (72) has great skin and just uses the L'Oreal anti ageing range.

all her life used Olay or Nivea, and ALWAYS sun protection factor especially on face.

she doesn't need or use foundation just uses Benefit Cha Cha Tint on cheeks.

maybe she's lucky. Grin

oh she's also been teetotal since late 40s due to rheumatoid arthritis (she thinks it affects her if she drinks) and hasn't smoked since 30 but did smoke from 15-30.

MillyRules · 22/01/2014 12:44

Hello yes the older ladies definitely have lots of money to spend BUT they spend it carefully. Always making sure that what they buy will go with other things. Im a Personal Stylist and love helping ladies find clothes that suit them. Such a honour that I am entrusted to help them feel better about themselves. A lot of the time we do a lot of talking as women have a lot of psychological baggage to deal with in regards their body shape. Once you put someone in an outfit that shows off their best assets they come alive and some of them, for the first time, appreciate their curves and feminine shape in a way they have not don't for many years.

Jaffacakesallround · 22/01/2014 12:44

I don't need to re-think my skin care hello.

I've looked after my skin since my early teens but a lot of it is the luck of the draw and genes.

Skin can be drier after the menopause and collagen decreases too which means you get more droop and lines. I don't think there is a product in the world that can change those, it's all hype, but using something to keep your skin supple and keeping the sun off it will help.

MillyRules · 22/01/2014 12:46

Hi Jaffa. With regards to skin droop.....have you tried face exercises to work the muscles in the face at all?

Jaffacakesallround · 22/01/2014 12:54

I don't have droop- I was saying what can happen :)

MillyRules · 22/01/2014 13:02

O, sorry. I think I will go the facercise route when the time comes....
