Hi,

I was thinking the other day about how important scent is in a product. I particularly hate the smell of palmers but I use it anyway because it really helps my scaly legs. Xmas Blush

What products do you hate the smell of?

The play area at our local mall has a hidden room fragrance dispenser (yes, they do that...) that is the vilest Calone-laced cheap aftershave you can think of Subliminal message - real brawny men can play with their children without losing their masculinity while the wives shop 'til they drop???

Spring join the perfumistas thread, you'll find like-minded people there! I wore Chanel no. 5 EDP for a full week over Christmas, it's so nuanced you find a new facet every time.

RestingActress · 31/12/2013 11:32

I used to drench myself in Obsession, Poison, Beautiful and Paris decades ago, they smell so strongly and give me a headache now.

Cerrutti 1881, I bought it just before I found out I was pregnant with DS so was wearing it through the non-stop morning sickness phase - the smell now makes my mouth start to salivate and not in a good way. Kenzo Flowers does the same now as that was the perfume I'd just bought when pregnant with DD.

Batiste - it smells of the greasy hair that it is supposed to disguise.

MmeGuillotine · 31/12/2013 11:40

Urgh, yes, Body Shop White Musk! It smells horrible to me and I remember being bewildered by its popularity in the nineties.

I also really hate most things that smell of rose - which seems odd as it's ROSE fgs, but no, I can't abide it.

I'm not keen on jasmine either - it smells putrid to me. :(

Kernowgal · 31/12/2013 12:43

ConcreteElephant funnily enough my dill hatred comes from living in Russia, where it was also put on everything. Piles of the stuff in the local market. Yuck yuck yuck.

I love coriander, but hate curly parsley (flat leaved is ok in small doses) because the smell gives me a headache.

SundaySimmons · 31/12/2013 12:51

I've just remembered a disgusting smell.

Some years ago I wanted a hair cut and on a whim walked into a salon. It was an old fashioned hair salon, but that didn't bother me as I only wanted an all over trim, not a restyle.

I didn't even need to have my hair washed as I didn't want to be too long in there and it could just be dampened down if they wanted to.

A very nice young girl sat me down, put the cape around me, combed through my hair, discussed the trim and then she picked up a spray bottle....

Lordy! Lordy! It was stagnant water! No wonder they were so lovely and accommodating to me,they couldn't have had a customer in ten years!

The water was absolutely rank, I was nearly heaving at the pong!

I had to explain to the lady, and the other lady in the shop who was the owner that water stagnates! They were genuinely shocked.

I had to have my hair washed, but I can still recall that disgusting smell to this day.

ConcreteElephant · 31/12/2013 12:58

Oh Kernowgal, how funny - I had a tiny bit more control over what I ate in Russia and managed to swerve the dill (mostly!). It's so overpowering as a smell and flavour. I'm not mad keen on coriander either though.

Two of my most recent favourite perfumes have turned out to be limited editions, the originals of which I don't like at all - very frustrating! One was Boss Sunset and the other was a CK one. I wish the perfume houses wouldn't do that.

WhoKnowsWhereTheMistletoes · 31/12/2013 13:01

I agree Batiste is vile, does a good job but the smell is just grim. Never tried any of the variant fragranced ones. I use a grapefruit scented dry shampoo from Lush now if I have to use it, much nicer.

I detest Body Shop White Musk, but they used to do an oil called Japanese Musk which I loved.

As for things I do like.

My favourite scent of all is that of a freshly sliced lime. Also lemon.

I love many flowers, but not many floral fragranced products. Favourite flowers are sweat pea, bluebell, rose, jasmine, lavender. I hate lilies.

CuntyBunty · 31/12/2013 18:28

Forgot good old Imperial Leather; it smells like stale spunk, or stale post sex fanjo, bleurgh.

Love Body Shop hemp hand cream; it reminds me of gothy clubs of my youth.

VelvetStrider · 31/12/2013 18:31

Right Guard deodorant
Anything 'cotton' scented
Cut grass - reminds me of childhood asthma attacks!
Coffee
Patchouli - smells like crusties who hung out in dodgy squats in the 1990s
Rose - far too prim

I do love chocolate/vanilla/coconut smells though.

msdiamant · 04/02/2014 11:30

I do not like the smell of pastries with meat, onions usually sold at trains stations. I hate when people eat them on trains as they smell revolting. Sorry, to those who love them.
I love dill and would happily put it into salads and soups. I also love parsley and basil. Lavanda is great.
I once bought ready to bake chicken from M&S and it smelled like poo. It had no particular spices but was smeared in some brown sauce. My DH was fine about it but I did not eat it.
Venison sausages from Sainsburys have such sweet meaty smell that it made me nearly sick when they were cooking. Again DH loved it and I had to cover my nose when he had to turn them over in a pan.
I am fine with Body Shop Hemp cream. It does not have a particularly beautiful smell but neither revolting. Good for the skin and the hemp lip balm is delicious and smells really yummy.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 04/02/2014 14:59

Most clarins creams,urghh!

AnUnearthlyChild · 04/02/2014 15:08

I adore the smell of palmers. I buy it for the smell, weirdo that I am.

Chanel no5 and tuberose smell awful and trigger migraines.

And I hate the smell of 8 hour cream. Amazing stuff but smells like waste products from a petrochemical plant. :(

Whatfun · 04/02/2014 15:12

Liz Earle moisturisers
Anything from Lush
Angel perfume
Clinique Aromatics Elixir
Joop for men

All guaranteed to make me heave.

plasticbanana · 04/02/2014 15:17

Elnett hairspray
Lush shops
Marks and Spencers

Yes, I know those last two are not products but terribly smelly shops. I'll actually take another route rather than walk past a Lush.

mrs14 · 04/02/2014 16:10

Co-op hairspray. Has a real solvent smell to it that really follows you. Yuck!

ellesabe · 04/02/2014 20:05

Nivea.

My mum used to wear Nivea intensive care hand cream in the car when I was younger and whenever I smell it now I feel travel sick.

TheFillyjonk · 07/02/2014 19:43

I hate the smell of Palmers too, it smells like baked beans to me. Which I loathe.

Anything coconut scented gets the big thumbs down from me.

The worst, WORST scented product is Johnson & Johnson exfoliating facial scrub in the blue tube. It has a grim, sulphurous odour that they have tried to mask with a cucumber scent. This only makes the vile, eggy smell worse.

hollyisalovelyname · 07/02/2014 23:45

Cocoa butter

Bornin1984 · 07/02/2014 23:46

Anything
Lavenders!!!!

trixymalixy · 07/02/2014 23:51

Aussie conditioner. It made my morning sickness 10x worse.

Mr Muscle lemon kitchen spray. Nothing like lemon.

seasalt · 08/02/2014 00:24

Judith Williams cleanser and moisturiser. After using it for a few days I got a terrible migraine. Threw them in the bin.

TossedSaladsAndScrambledEggs · 08/02/2014 00:32

Liz Earle moisturiser . Smells like old eggs

Suzannewithaplan · 08/02/2014 01:24

I understand why people don't like bodyshop white musk, it's not exactly sophisticated but I just LOVE it because it takes me straight back to hot summer evenings when I was a teenager.

babacoon · 08/02/2014 02:33

keep I know someone who has only used angel perfume for the last 50 years of her life !!!
She requests all her children to but if for Xmas, bday etc ever year. It smells vile I agree. She is a nice lady though:D

SecretWitch · 08/02/2014 03:01

Dior addict and Thierry Muggler's Womanity..the only two scents that have made me physically I'll
