Are you a winter colouring? If so come and join us for chat about clothes/make up following on from here.

Hi mrskitty. V hard to say in a photo. The red looks ok to me? The greeny one is hard to call, how's it next to your swatches?
I'm impressed you've managed to dye so much. I'm trying to do the same with some bits though lots of it is old cashmere jumpers I've accrued from charity shops so no machine dying allowed...!

mrskittyfantistico · 28/02/2014 11:08

Thanks Foogle. I agree, I'm pretty sure the red tones with my hoc swatches. The green doesn't so much but it does seem to tone with a lot the 'dark winter' palettes I see online- of course I won't really know until they arrive and I try them on!

I really enjoyed dying all my old stuff. Like I said, I haven't got everything spot on but I'd drifted so far from the colours that suit me that just just darkening everything up a bit has made an improvement. I think that as I've got older (I'm 46) I'd gone a bit 'soft focus' and I never factored in colour when I was trying to figure out why I looked so crap all the time- I put it all down to age, having my son and gaining weight.

Are you able to dye the jumpers by hand? I've never tried hand dying, I always imagine it coming out less intense than machine dye but I don't know if I'm basing that on anything or making it up..!

Does anyone have any favourite 'winter' websites? I love this website for general colour stuff. She has a lot of information on each season and a blog which I enjoy. (I've linked to the dark winter page but the column on the left takes you to the right season, blog, homepage etc).

Oh, and this is a great comparison of deep winter and deep autumn that I'm finding useful: redandlipstick.blogspot.se/2012/12/how-to-distinguish-between-deep-autumn.html
I've not really strayed from the deep winter pages though (discovered it after I was analysed!) so I don't know what the rest is really like.

I am just ordering this, bit boring perhaps but may brighten up my work stuff. [http://www.woolovers.com/cashmere-merino/womens/classic-ladies-crew-cardigan.asp]

Hoping the colour will work, but not entirely confident!

sewbee50 · 28/02/2014 13:08

Which colour is it used?

Used2bthin · 28/02/2014 13:23

Oh no that link isn't working either sorry! Its the crew neck cardigan in rosé red.

Used2bthin · 28/02/2014 13:24

Sorry rich rosé not rose red!

sewbee50 · 28/02/2014 13:28

Lovely! How will you wear it? I always get in a pickle with crew cardigans, do you wear something underneath and leave a button undone?

Used2bthin · 28/02/2014 13:33

Yes I have been wearing tube or pencil skirts with a long Ish vest then a cardigan done up over with a button undone. The cardis I have been wearing mostly are the h and m ones though which are a good shape for this and the woolovers one looks similar. I was tempted to order more but thought I should see what its like first.

Also thinking maybe I need to start thinking about spring stuff soon. I am really enjoying getting some smarter clothes I am just not used to it so find it hard to know what to wear.

Fooogle · 28/02/2014 19:19

Hope colour proves right used2. I ordered loads of stuff from lands end, kettlewell Blush and too from Great Plains... Colours on and off good. Good cardi I think from lands end in a blue or rather maybe I just mean, good blue... I was just thinking the same re crew cardis, like idea of them as basics but then get thrown with how to wear them! Think my hauls are overall a bit boring...
The Great Plains top is a great electric blue but looks v wierd on me.
Kettlewell cardis... Bit nonplussed.
Finding the pinks hard to see as good on me despite having some **. Need to sort that else I'll only have blue and purple to wear!

Used2bthin · 28/02/2014 19:24

I always thought I couldn't wear pink fooogle then I had a bright pink scarf which I had so many compliments on I re thought it! Its not really me but the right fuchsia can look really good. I just can never find it!!

Used2bthin · 28/02/2014 19:35

Ps meant to say thank you, hopefully it will be the right red. Still need tops to go under cardis and am struggling due to tummy and long body. And I wear lots of blue and purple too, despite not being that keen on purple!

TheGruffalo2 · 28/02/2014 19:48

I've got a really old silk/cotton cardi from Woolovers in that colour and it is a really good match for one of the swatches in my wallet Used. Its a good quality basic that has lasted really well.

Used2bthin · 28/02/2014 19:52

Ooh thanks Thegruffalo2 that's good to know!

givemeaminute · 28/02/2014 20:04

geneticsbunny I know what you mean about the challenge of natural classic in a casual way. There was a discussion upthread about the preppy style being the way to go but I'm not sure I've got the hang of that yet. It still seems quite smart. I'm finding tube skirts quite good at the moment. A nice shape but I can still move in them. I've also got a few skater style dresses - might they work for you?

givemeaminute · 28/02/2014 20:07

I've got a Woolovers jumper in the rich rosé I think, used2 and it's a great colour. Hopefully you'll like it when it arrives!

Used2bthin · 28/02/2014 20:32

Oh brilliant , thanks! I love this thread!

KosherBacon · 28/02/2014 21:07

I love the rich rose and it's a perfect match for one of the swatches (can't remember which one).

FaceDirectionOfTravel · 28/02/2014 21:17

Alright! Fine! I'll get it! Honestly...

Grin (have secretly had my eye on that and something in the blueberry for a while now)

But in silk/cotton or cashmere mix?

QueenCadbury · 28/02/2014 21:19

mrskitty what dyes do you use? I've never had a huge success with dylon but that may be because of colours or materials that I'm dyeing.

I wear crew neck cardis all the time but wear them as cardis (if I buttoned them up they would strain over my norks and if I got a bigger size then they'd be huge everywhere else). I wear with tees or blouses and jeans although I'm guessing this may not translate into a more formal outfit of a pencil skirt.

With regards to pink, I find it really hard to wear too. It looks best on me as a cardi with a neutral top underneath rather than a solid block of colour. Either that or a 'pop' of colour as a belt, nail varnish or bag. But then again I'm a sprinter so look best in the bright colours ...

Which colour is blueberry similar too? It looks a bit dark to be royal purple to me? If it is royal purple I'd be v happy...

OP posts:
MissScatterbrain · 28/02/2014 22:11

Another one here who wasn't sure of pink - I love it now though when used for lipstick, nail varnish and accessories. Today I wore a deep pink lipstick (this one) which matches the pink in my scarf and it made me feel good (and rather springlike!).

FaceDirectionOfTravel · 01/03/2014 12:46

Queen I thought it looked more like indigo than royal purple. Indigo is one of my ** colours. Dark, cool, not dusty, seemed like a winner to me?

mrskittyfantistico · 01/03/2014 13:09

Queen I used machine dylon: black, navy blue, dark green and burlesque red. I only dyed cotton clothes and I really was just going for a bit of a cheapy way of getting closer to my colours, my whole wardrobe was really wishy washy autumn sort of stuff and I couldn't afford to replace it all at once. I would say only a few things turned out spot on but everything does look better.

I don't think I'll be doing any more, hopefully now I can just take my time and gradually replace what I have now with pieces that are right. Unless of course I succumb to more ebaying or charity shop bargains...
