I bought this charcoal knitted dress from TKMaxx

www.tkmaxx.com/day-and-summer-dresses/dark-grey-knit-dress-with-belt/invt/30283230&bklist=icat,4,shop,1,3091

Not sure why it looks like there are white splodges on the bust - it's really dark grey.

IMHO the belt looks really cheap so would like a wider one. Any ideas where from? I don't own any belts at all Blush

ElizabethBathory · 19/11/2013 16:34

£125 off Shock Bargain! It's lovely, I like how dark the charcoal is. I tend to get my belts from ASOS, they usually have a good range, and the real leather ASOS own brand ones are good quality.

50hoo · 19/11/2013 16:39

It's a gorgeous dress Elizabeth looks very flattering on. Thanks for the belt tip.

Here's my wardrobe in all its glory. It doesn't have much left since I culled my autumnal colours Blush

bettybigballs · 19/11/2013 17:50

That dress is stunning 50hoo, what will you wear it with?

I'm still trawling online to find inspiration. I'm thinking of going to Westfield on Friday to find some bits. Are there any shops that are particularly good for winters at the minute?

50hoo · 19/11/2013 17:56

betty I'm not really sure! Was thinking boring black opaques and black calf-length boots. I'd like a thicker red belt to lift it. My usual style is to wear a cardigan over everything so I will feel a bit exposed!! jacket would be good but I don't have one. I've chucked out most of my clothes!

Do you or fellow winters have any ideas? I'd be really open to suggestions as I'm pretty useless at style stuff Blush

50hoo · 19/11/2013 17:58

betty as for shops - Phase 8 has lots of dark green stuff and East has lots of burgundy/damson. Laura Ashley has a fab dark green boiled wool jacket and a burgundy one too. John Lewis have a great v neck cashmere cobalt blue jumper. Pink is everywhere!

bettybigballs · 19/11/2013 18:07

I'm also a cardigan girl! Need to get myself out of the rut though. Trying to get my head around blazers but they feel too formal for me.

Thanks for the tips, going to have a look now.

MissScatterbrain · 19/11/2013 18:22

TK Maxx and Uniqlo are great for cardigans.

That charcoal dress is lovely Smile

bettybigballs · 19/11/2013 18:43

Sorry to keep posting links but what do you think of this? The collar looks quite a cool Purple but the burgundy might be a bit too warm?

www.uniqlo.com/uk/store/goods/078153

50hoo · 19/11/2013 19:20

Not loving that betty it seems a bit muted maybe? The purple looks ok but the rest is a bit dumbed down.

That statement seems to be weird since I can wear charcoal and charcoal isn't bright Confused

No wonder we're struggling!!

Heeeelpppppp!

50hoo · 19/11/2013 19:20

and please DO keep posting links! That way we all learn :)

MissScatterbrain · 19/11/2013 19:21

Isn't that a dark bitter choc brown as well as burgundy & magenta?

I think the blue/turq and black one would be a better choice.

MissScatterbrain · 19/11/2013 19:24

This is a good one -damson boucle cardi

QueenCadbury · 19/11/2013 19:34

My goodness me. You're on p3 already Grin. I've got some catching up to do!!

OP posts:
QueenCadbury · 19/11/2013 20:30

Phew, I've finally caught up Smile. Welcome to the newbies.

carrie I often wear a colour with a neutral. I pretty much always wear a black/ white/grey/navy blouse or tee with a coloured cardi and jeans. A lot of my cardis used to be muted colours as I always thought I was a summer (blonde, blue eyed) and I didn't really like bright colours. But just by now wearing a fuschia or cobalt cardi makes such a difference. I will often add in a contrasting belt too to do the "add a third colour and watch the magic" or whatever the booklet says! I've tried wearing 2 bright colours eg bright cardi and bright top but it just doesn't feel like me and I feel much happier in a neutral.

I do sometimes wear jumpers too and have the powerful blue turtleneck from gap which looks fab. I have a pink one from uniqlo but it's probably not bright enough. It looks fine but not wow. I often find when I try stuff on in a shop it looks totally different when you get it home in natural daylight. Because I bought it on a day trip to London I couldn't return it but if I'd bought it locally I probably would have done.

Make up wise, I've embraced the bright lips as fuschia especially makes my eyes pop. But in the day I do time it down with balm otherwise I'd feel too overdone in the school run. I don't wear foundation anyway and have stuck to my old 9 years old to be precise blusher but I'm fairly neutral toned.

The things that confuse me is the whole contrast thing that elizabeth talks about. I know it's meant to be a winter thing but I just don't see it on me. I'm pale but no Snow White and I have blonde hair and blue eyes, neither of which are particularly striking so I just don't seem to have that typical contrast Confused.

The other thing I find difficult is knowing when a colour really is a winter one. I went shopping with an autumn and we both had our swatches and when we found a blue cardi which I thought was a good match for lagoon blue, it all seemed a good match for one of her blues. The same with a purple thing we found. I had a moment of Hmm is this all a load of b* Grin. I guess the best thing is just to try things on and see whether it makes you look fabulous or not.

Sorry, that was a really epic post and probably not helpful at all Grin

This is the [http://www.pinterest.com/pin/427349452112289455/ pink jumper] I was talking about. Any thoughts?

Re the pink jumper - that looks like magenta? I think if you wear it with another winter colour that might help? Maybe a wow pink scarf?

As having similar colours in other seasons this link may explains it?

MissScatterbrain · 19/11/2013 20:46

Shock at the purple lippy - I need to see a photo of someone wearing it!!

KosherBacon · 19/11/2013 20:55

Wow, we've all gone winter crackers in the last 24 hours, I can't keep up!

I am another sultry winter who is part of the neutral skin rather than cool skin, brigade. I have always thought I have pale olive skin, rather than yellow toned. Foundations that suit me are
-Make Up For Ever HD foundation 117
-Make Up For Ever face and body 20
-Bourjuis Healthy Mix 51
-Bare Minerals Fairy Lught
-Estee Lauder Double Wear ecru (although a bit peachy)
-Dior shades ending in a 1 have a neutral undertone too
-Revlon Colorstay Buff
Some ranges are just far too orange or yellow based for me though, I am looking at you Bobbi Brown.

I am somewhat of a spending hiatus at the moment. I might keep an eye out for a coat in the sales, but I am trying to lose some weight (who isn't?) and with Christmas coming up, need to be more frugal. Keep the chat coming though!

ElizabethBathory · 19/11/2013 21:04

Queen, I used the example of hair colour v skin colour as contrast cos that's the most common one in winters, but the contrast can be elsewhere too. Perhaps your hair and eyes are very bright, or even just the whites of your eyes - a lot of very dark skinned people are winters because of the contrast between their teeth and the whites of their eyes.

My mum has bright blue eyes and used to have my hair colour but now it's bright silver - she still looks best in winter colours because there's still that brightness there, even though there's not as much contrast between her skin and hair.

I think the contrast factor is important because it's the reason we look dull in muted colours. We need vivid colours or there is a fight going on between our contrasting features, so they fall flat. Whereas someone without high contrast like an autumn will look glowy and unified in muted colours.

Am I making any sense?!
