So, are bootleg jeans a complete no no?

I'm just too short and curvy to get away with skinnies (plus I wore them when they were called drainpipes and I was 2 sizes smaller). Can I give in to my age (mid 40s) and wear bootlegs that actually suit me?

Meh, if you google there are hundreds of photos of fashionable celebs looking great in bootcuts. Just buy dark denim & make sure they're long enough to nearly touch the floor when you're wearing your shoes. None of this nonsense (beige jeans on left)

Get with it... Bootcuts are back

Elle can't believe it though

Fishandjam · 14/09/2013 22:12

travelin, like footless tights became leggings!

Karbea · 14/09/2013 22:27

I've a few pairs and some flares from before all expensive brands and they've been in and out of the charity bag more times than I can remember.
The celebs are wearing them and as you say, looking great.
The problem for me is, after years of wearing skinnies any other silhouette just looks odd :/

I looked on Donna Ida and by far the greatest amount of jeans they stock are still skinnies (look at amounts on left hand side).

squoosh · 14/09/2013 22:33

OP you should always wear what you want and what you think suits your own body shape. Personally I like straight leg jeans, always dark, can't stand pale jeans. Yuck.

squoosh · 14/09/2013 22:34

These ones are nice, they're more of a skinny flare

So, are bootleg jeans a complete no no?

These ones are hideous

I am short and curvy and I wear 1) skinnies with long blouses and flats and 2) high waist bootleg jeans with tops tuck inside and high heeled low boots.

You can do it Wink

squoosh · 14/09/2013 22:58

The ones in my first picture are J Brand 818 Mid Rise Travelin.

ilovepowerhoop · 14/09/2013 22:59

I hate bootcut jeans and wear skinny jeans from Next as I like the narrower ankle

CointreauVersial · 14/09/2013 23:00

I feel like one of The Osmonds when I wear bootcuts now, but I wouldn't mind if they came back because they are very flattering.

Luckily I like skinnies.

Fishandjam · 14/09/2013 23:04

Thing is squoosh, I've probably got some like that second pair, but I'd never wear them like that. With Converse or Docs and a short jumper over a long t-shirt, yes. Tucked in blouse and spike heels? Niet, tovaritch.

Sweetsandchocolate · 15/09/2013 01:28

Shock I live in boot cut jeans. I hate wearing skinnies as they are soooo uncomfortable, that's if I can get them on in the first place (what does everyone else do?).

Should I be trying straight legs then? Can you link in some ones to try that are less than £30?

Myliferocks · 15/09/2013 01:33

I have both skinnies and bootcut.
Everywhere sells bootcut so they can't be that bad.

GrandstandingBlueTit · 15/09/2013 01:35

I am 5'10" and as size 8/10/12 depending on the shop. I have long legs, and you will never get me into a pair of skinnies nor leggings, because they make my legs look fat. Like sausages encased in material. They actually make my alright legs look tree-trunk like. Why would I do that to myself?

I wear straight legs, because they make my legs look slim.

I was reminded of this on Friday when I inadvertently tried on a pair of 'skinny' trousers. Sausages ahoy.

The whole notion of them even being called 'skinny' makes me arf. Grin

Wear what makes you look good and feel good, and sod what other people are wearing or telling you to wear.

DanglingChillis · 15/09/2013 01:52

Squoosh, the reality is with legs half the length of the model in your first picture I'm always going to look more chunky of thigh and therefore more like the second photo. But then, in skinnies, there is always the fear of catching yourself in a mirror and realising you look like this.

Isn't a look really over once we all start wearing it? I'm a short curvy Mum in my 40s from the north of england. By definition I am the fashion wilderness, no fashionista wants to wear what I wear. So can't I opt out of fashion altogether? Boden sell some lovely Tweed skirts Smile.

Dangling I will always say wear what you want to wear, feel quite free to tell 'fashion' to fuck off.

What I was trying to convey with my examples is that bootcut looks more flattering and more fashionable when the flare doesn't start from the knee. A quite skinny jean from thigh to above ankle and then a small flare is far more flattering that a baggyish jean that flares from knee to ankle.

Pompbear · 15/09/2013 09:58

New bootcuts have had a slight tweak I think. The leg is skinnier and the flared bit is more gradual. My new bootcuts look very different to my old Pre DC ones! When I was at school, anything skinny legged Or tapered was tobe avoided.

I've worn my new ones long, with prettY sandals but I'm not sure how to wear them for autumn!

Generally tho I think you have to feelcomfortable to look good so anything goes OP!

Pompbear · 15/09/2013 12:45

Slightly random post as phone keeps crashing!

paperlantern · 15/09/2013 13:09

I love bootlegs! skinnies just do not work on me.

even better are my new lovely dark slim leg bootcut jeans from M&S indigo range. they are gorgeous!

brightnearly · 15/09/2013 13:15

Ditch the jeans. Go for dresses! Problem solved!

TripTrapTripTrapOverTheBridge · 15/09/2013 13:37

Bootlegs are not frumpy. They can look fab,it all depends what you wear with them.

Skinnies, on the other hand, look bloody awful on many women.

Twinklestein · 15/09/2013 13:40

All the most fashionable jean brands do bootcut, so I'm not sure what people are worried about.

I wear skinnies, bootcut, bell bottoms & boyfriend jeans. My bootcuts are skinny round the bottom & thighs.

Bootcuts are more flattering than skinnies, particularly on curvier figures.
Personally I think you decide what suits you & stick with it & only embrace a particular style if it works for you.
