I did it!

OP posts:
motherinferior · 11/09/2013 09:22

My fingers are crossed too Grin

I have had my Fasting Blood Tests. So in the past week I've eye check, breast check, smear test (remarkably gentle) am booked in for dentist on Friday and one of those 40-60 tests (hence blood tests this morning) week after next...

bigTillyMint · 11/09/2013 09:30

MI, what are the fasting blood tests for?

motherinferior · 11/09/2013 09:38

Diabetes. Not that I think I have it, but genetically I've got a higher risk of developing it, given my south-Asian mother, so it's worth saying 'yes' if that's on offer. Mainly they check for cholesterol (you don't have to fast for that).

I am mostly feeling glum and under-achieving today Grin

Cremolafoam · 11/09/2013 09:45

Dd has had the mole orf.
Painful. She was stoic

MI amazing health overhaul.
I need to book in for breast screening, but may wait til after op.
I have very shiny teeth as had a scrape and polish yesterday .
Wish the rest of me could be scraped and polished.

Herbs how is mini herbs doing - week 2 report??

Bd thinking of you today.

motherinferior · 11/09/2013 09:54

It was the looming invitation to the 40-60 health check that made me finally purchase running bra as am worried they'll just tell me I am vile unfit porker Grin

bigTillyMint · 11/09/2013 10:55

Flowers to Cremo's DD

MI, you are being well checked-over - is it your NHS GP doing all this?

wilbur · 11/09/2013 11:00

I have a "Free NHS Health Check" in an hour's time, mainly for the cholesterol check and for the chance to bend the nurse's ear about the clinic's appointments system. Have not been invited for boob mashing yet due to my extreme youth. MI - don't they let you off smear tests at some point? The last time I went in I did feel like saying don't bother - why continue this sham assumption that I am indulging in some kind of exciting sexual cornucopia which would require regular testing. (And yes, I know it's not just about that, but my lady parts are getting prim in their old age).

I need to make dentist appt. And eye test too probably.

Am doing my taxes today. Am v v v v v bored.

herbaceous · 11/09/2013 11:01

Hmm. I have been good, and I have been bad, health-wise.

Good - I'm back on the 5:2, and today started doing the dreaded Shred again.

Bad - I'm well overdue a smear test. I just HATE HATE HATE it. It hurts so much, and the nurse saying 'it shouldn't hurt' makes me think I've got something terribly wrong with me. So I just don't go, which of course increases the chances that I DO have something terribly wrong with me.

Re the micro-herb, he seems to be having a whale of a time. Already promoted to the top set of year 1 for reading, and his love of singing has been noted. Each day I get a detailed run-down of the carb-heavy lunches: 'Today we had pasta, potato wedgies, garlic bread and, of course, crumble and custard. Oh, and lettuce.' He has made a couple of friends, and declared himself 'really really happy'. The eye business has all been sorted. My medical appeal letter lies languishing on my desktop, unsent.

Good luck to BD the Elder. Hope all is well.

herbaceous · 11/09/2013 11:02

Oh, and yes. Haven't been to the dentist for buggering ages either. My teeth are in dire need of a scale and polish. But it hurts, and is expensive.

Stropperella · 11/09/2013 11:04

BD, fingers crossed here for your mum. Hope all goes smoothly today.

Nobody wants to screen me for anything yet. I get free eye checks because there is a history of glaucoma in the family and had my peepers checked over earlier in the year. Am beginning to wonder at what age they call you for breast screening round here. Surely someone will be wanting to squeeze me soon, now that I am 48 and a half??

I was hoping not to have to buy another waterproof coat this year, but I have just noticed that the home-made elixir of youth (hahaha) that I slap on my neck every day (a combo of rose oil and spf factor 50 cream) has left an icky stain on the inside of the collar of the green Goretex number I bought a year or two ago. Plus the coat appears to be not as waterproof as it was. Am trying out stain removal and re-waterproofing treatments, but am not hopeful. Damn.

Stropperella · 11/09/2013 11:10

Herbs, fantastic news re: Herbs Junior. Top Set of Year 1 already! Sounds like the school is pretty on the ball.

We have an incipient problem with ds's schooling this year, but it's too tricky to go public with here (you never quite know who is reading, after all, and I have made myself highly identifiable to anyone that knows me). I may well be asking for some advice next Friday..

motherinferior · 11/09/2013 11:23

Herbs, my test didn't hurt yesterday. It didn't hurt the last time too. So, having had a meeting with the lovely press officer from a charity specialising in Cancer of the Ladyparts, I am going to pitch a piece on good practice in smear tests. Because I was anticipating it being absolutely horrible and it wasn't. Which was down to her skill. Not my attitude (so bah to your nurse, if it does hurt it is HER FAULT not yours).

My barrage of tests is mainly a perfect storm of reminders. It is all rather wearing.

Blackduck · 11/09/2013 11:47

I need to have eyes tested (I need 'proper' glasses and not the cheapie reading ones from boots) and must do dentist too!

I am ignoring smear test....
Stropps - that sounds ominous - what year is your ds in - think he is a tad younger than mine? I also need to slot in secondary visits, though barring accidents I think it is decided (well ds has decided).

Thanks for all the good wishes - hopefully hear something soon....

bigTillyMint · 11/09/2013 11:56

Herbs, "potato wedgies"Grin Fantastic that he's been put into an appropriate reading set so quickly and the eye stuff - that does sound like they are on the ballSmile

Breast screening seems a bit random here - I went last year aged 48, colleague went a few months later aged 52. Smears shouldn't hurt - they are fairly unpleasant, but frankly after giving birth twice, they are a breeze!

I badly need a hearing testSad I am putting my head in the sand, but I am something of a joke at home and work.

Stropperella · 11/09/2013 12:25

BTM, the dcs keep telling me I need a hearing test because we keep having exchanges along the lines of "but you don't like jam" "I didn't say JAM, I said HAM". Blush

holidaybug · 11/09/2013 12:39

What is this thread all about?

Stropperella · 11/09/2013 12:40

BD, ds is in year 4. It's just a thorny little problem that I need to nip in the bud now, but I will have to tread very carefully when dealing with it. Am hoping the Crepey Crew will come up with some firm but tactful lines I can use. Dh all for rushing in and doing his bull in a china shop routine. This would be a bad plan.

CointreauVersial · 11/09/2013 13:26

Holidaybug - this thread is about all sorts.

Mainly, it is a group of slightly....crepey.....folk comparing notes on life, children, health and chin hair.

Feel free to join the chat.

wilbur · 11/09/2013 13:37

Herbs, that sounds great re ds - and carbs are good for a growing boy...

Stropps - ds2 has just gone into Y4 so I'm happy to compare notes if it helps.

Hi holidaybug - we do sometimes talk about clothes and makeup as well!

Blackduck · 11/09/2013 13:54

Herbs fab news re ds - and yes, carbs are good - they need the energy and it is quick release - as long as there is a bit of greenery in there ;)

Mum in recovery (we think - all a bit vague) - dad needs to call back later this afternoon and I think I am off to buy him a mobile phone (for 'old people' as dp put it)

Holidaybug - this thread is about anything and everything, with boots thown in ;)

QueenQueenie · 11/09/2013 14:43

Don't run away Holidaybug! we may be crepey but we are rather lovely..

OP posts:
QueenQueenie · 11/09/2013 14:44

CV, are you hiding those cast iron pixie boots from me....?

OP posts:
Cremolafoam · 11/09/2013 18:41

Holidaybug welcome.
I've been asking myself that for a couple of years. Grin
Life , ageing and being fabulous in the face of drooping boobs .

motherinferior · 11/09/2013 18:42

I have gone off the written word. Literacy is over rated. Gah.

Another hour gone, another submission to an agent...

hattymattie · 11/09/2013 18:46

BD - so glad to hear everything went ok for your Mum - sorry I'm a bit late off the mark with this one. Basically it's still raining here so they can't work on the roof so it's really cold as we only have a plastic sheet on the roof and I'm getting increasingly sulky and bad tempered about it. We need a run of good days - I'm going to start praying soon and believe me I am not religious.
