HoC Spring thread....

BeginnerSAHM · 12/08/2013 19:00

This is a thread for all of us who have had their colours done' by House of Colour and are a Spring. (And 'believe' in it...Wink.) Or, by CMB and are 'clear and warm'. Think a few other CMB catergories might be spring too - 'soft and warm' maybe/' warm and clear' (different from 'clear and warm' because of the order of priorities/dominance...)?

Feel free to ask any Spring-related fashion/make-up/style questions on this thread.... (I won't know the answer but lots of people on these boards will!)

So, I'll start with a 'spring' question.... I never wear lipstick. I occasionally wear neutral-ish lipgloss on a night out but never reapply during the evening so it's always gone within the first 20 mins. I know as a spring, I 'should'. Can anybody suggest a Revlon lip butter that is springish? I gather they are more sheer than full lipstick so might be a good way for me to start trying lip colour out! Thank you

Ha Ha Fooogle I've got Lovers Coral too - we obviously like the subtle colours. It's very pretty isn't it?

Hopefully · 06/10/2013 10:09

Foogle again, not necessarily! The colours you've listed are a mix of golden and blue spring colours, so hard to say based on those. I think in general (and I appreciate I'm biased) that CMB don't explain exactly where and why you've ended up where you have and clients don't leave as clear on how to put together their colours. But then, I think it's cheaper (?) and takes less time, so that makes sense I guess. You could always go for a re-rate at HoC (no requirement to be a client, just to know your season) and you will find out where you fall under our system? It's about £45, and you can buy a wallet if you like, or keep using your CMB one.

Gilly the reason we don't go into more depth about the types of seasons is because (a) most people come to us with absolutely no understanding of colour analysis and it's too much information for them and (b) there isn't enough time to give that kind of unique information to everyone in a five hour class. For people who have researched prior to arrival and have an idea how the system works, they're ready for more information, but most people aren't, they just know they're going to come and be told what colours to wear. If any of my clients ask though, I'll always spend a bit of time talking about it - it often comes up in my classes anyway because I am a very non-typical looking Autumn, so people ask about my season. There are two style development classes, one based entirely on colour (the other, strangely, on personal style!), which is great for getting into more depth about your type of season and the way you need to put colours together. It was great for me to realise that although i'm an autumn I need more a lot contrast than the average autumn does, for example, both because of my colouring and my personality.

12 Blueprints is a different system again (something called Sci/Art), but there are similarities. Jumping you may find that the 12 Blueprints bright spring isn't you because I think it's closer to a Blue Spring, not a bright painbox spring (but don't quote me on that).

Re the style day, no need to get down to undies - 99% of my clients choose to wear leggings and a camisole, which I inform them of in their booking form so they know to bring them. Very occasionally I get some wonderfully confident women who whip all their clothes off, but not often.

hollyisalovelyname · 06/10/2013 13:32

Checked out lipstick suggestions at Mac. All too bright. Very orangy/ coral- make my teeth look yellow. Any other suggestions?

Gillybobs · 06/10/2013 14:24

Hopefully that makes perfect sense! I was lucky enough to have been part of the original spring thread on here so had loads of info ( and successfully guessed my season, right down to being a paintbox!, even before my colours day. I guess that's why I was a bit disappointed with the depth of the colours day for me personally, although I do heartily recommend it as an experience

jumpinghoops · 06/10/2013 18:30

Hopefully, thank you, that's really helpful information. Its good to know that I can clarify the contrast thing as part of the style day (and that getting down to your knickers is not obligatory)!

Aquelven · 06/10/2013 19:42

Looking on some of the links, blueprints etc, it says Bright Springs & Clear Springs ( their equivalent of HoC Blue Spring) can wear black though our HoC swatches have no black.
I hope this is so cos I have lots of lovely things in my wardrobe that are black.

shopalot · 06/10/2013 19:53

I have a couple of questions........I had my colours done years ago and was told I am a clear spring-can anyone tell me what that is called now? Also do you ever change colours as you get older? If your hair changes colour does that change your colours or are you fundamentally a season which stays with you forever?

Fooogle · 06/10/2013 20:09

Thanks hopefully hmmm, maybe I can't get to the bottom of the conundrum! Aque, now you mention it my sister is a 'clear' spring in CMB and was told she could still do black which was interesting at the time...
Would love to do style and/or a re-rate...!

If I'm a warm spring, would a navy coat be a good idea? Or a bit dull? Eyeing one up on eBay!

Funny wools, that we have subtler lip tendencies. I want to wear the bright ones but then chicken out! Think my lips are naturally quite pigmented... Not sure if it changes things but think it does somehow. How about you?

Aquelven · 06/10/2013 20:44

Butting in! That Revlon colour looks gorgeous just my sort too, finding very bright difficult. I like pinks that are mid toned with a warm tone, not mauve. Used to love Estée Lauder Pink Champagne till the swines discontinued it last year, emailed to no avail. Really love Mac Bombshell I wish & No7 Mischief.

Fooogle · 06/10/2013 21:21

Butt away Aque...gonna try wear it tomorrow. Also have the pink brandy one which I can just about manage thinly...

What do you folks wear for eye makeup? I just do mascara and a kind of brown eye shadow as liner not much time for much more than that

Maybe we should arrange some mass lippy redistribution with all the other threads Aque! Mind you some of mine have been kicking round a while!

BirdyBedtime · 06/10/2013 21:43

Foogle I'm much the same on the make-up front and to be honest have given up on mascara in the past year due to eye problems needing frequent eye drops so even with waterproof stuff I can end up lookinga bit panda-ish. Foundation, powder and lippy most days for me. Actually my consultant said all you need is lippy.

BeginnerSAHM · 06/10/2013 21:54

Drat - replied but it didn't work. Yup, shopalot, the old 'clear spring' on CMB (now 'clear and warm') makes you a spring in HOC. (Same as me!). Black is only ok on me - not dreadful but definitely not one of my best.

IfYoureHappyAndYouKnowIt · 07/10/2013 00:24

Hopefully. It's great to have your input. What's your view on blue springs and black? And also navy? I don't think black is great on me. But I do migrate towards navy, albeit with a splash or two typically.

Do you also think that blue springs can usually take a lot of contrast? I'm not sure that I can, as a blue spring.

Hopefully · 07/10/2013 08:37

Happy Black is not ok on the vast vast majority of blue springs. There may be some v high contrast (i.e. dark haired for a spring) types on whom it isn't completely awful, but on the whole it just sucks away all the brightness that Springs need - even being that little bit less warm than the other Spring types, a Blue Spring is still a Spring, and black is still incredibly draining. TBH I only rate it highly on about 30% of my Winter clients, never mind anyone else! It is so stark that even on Winters over the age of about 25 it can be awfully draining. I would much rather see a Blue Spring push their bright navy into a slightly darker navy for very formal office wear, but really keeping the brightness of the Spring palette is what makes your skintone sing as a Spring.

Hopefully · 07/10/2013 08:39

Shop your season will never change (you will always be a Spring, assuming you were analysed correctly in the first place), but the 'type' of season you are can change, especially with going grey. I was chatting to a Spring consultant at Conference last week who has been a Golden Spring forever and was feeling a bit flat in her colours so went for a re-rate and has shifted much closer to being a Blue Spring. It doesn't happen in a year or a couple of years, but over perhaps 5-15 years with a change in skintone and hair colour it can. It's one of the reasons we offer re-rates.

Aquelven · 07/10/2013 09:10

Do consultants drape themselves to find their season or go to someone else? Was just wondering Smile

Eye make up. I'm very consistent extremely boring & buy the same colours even when I feel like a bit of retail therapy & buy a new brand. ..mascara, black or brown/black, deep brown or charcoal liner, taupy brown shadow. I'm on a constant hunt for a brow pencil light enough but with no orange tone.

Today I'm wearing charcoal jeans, grey silky cowl neck jumper, navy suede shoes.....no splash of bright, not doing this very well Confused

BeginnerSAHM · 07/10/2013 09:10

...which is why I never buy black tops/jackets/coats/dresses anymore. Have a nice black Theory (expensive) work suit and still wear black trousers/skirts - and one dress with a v-neck, that I have (from when I thought I was a winter) but often pair them with navy and cream.
(Can't stand black with bright colours, but that's just me!)

Aquelven · 07/10/2013 09:13

I refuse to chuck out my very expensive, knee length, extremely soft, virtually new sheepskin coat Sad

Hopefully · 07/10/2013 10:02

Aque we are draped extensively during training to demonstrate, make sure our season categorisation is absolutely correct (eg blue spring) and practise on each other, so we are all pretty certain by the time we are trained! I have attempted to re-rate myself, but it's too fiddly and difficult to do yourself, I have decided.

Fooogle · 07/10/2013 10:21

Aque could you sell your coat on ebay or do you secretly like it despite its subversive colouring?
I'm a bit navy today, royal blue blouse, navy-ish high waisted trousers, tan boots. Tried to fix it with a turquoise necklace but feel even if it may be the right colour, its a bit dated...That's what getting dressed in a rush threw up!

Fooogle · 07/10/2013 10:27

Hopefully would you recommend training? how much does it cost would you mind me asking?
I'm a bit of a treading water, not-very-fulfilling-part-time-job person just now and love the profound effect having their colours 'done' can do for people and occasionally wonder if it could be a new direction for me. though get in such a muddle with mine and clothes that maybe I am best not unleashed!

Fooogle · 07/10/2013 10:28

'mine' being my colours, sorry, hasty posting

Hopefully · 07/10/2013 10:51

Foogle pm me, I'll be happy to answer any questions!

Hopefully · 07/10/2013 10:52

But in short, I totally would recommend it. It's the best job ever. Never going to make me a millionaire, but amazing, and I meet so many fascinating people.
