HoC Spring thread....

BeginnerSAHM · 12/08/2013 19:00

This is a thread for all of us who have had their colours done' by House of Colour and are a Spring. (And 'believe' in it...Wink.) Or, by CMB and are 'clear and warm'. Think a few other CMB catergories might be spring too - 'soft and warm' maybe/' warm and clear' (different from 'clear and warm' because of the order of priorities/dominance...)?

Feel free to ask any Spring-related fashion/make-up/style questions on this thread.... (I won't know the answer but lots of people on these boards will!)

So, I'll start with a 'spring' question.... I never wear lipstick. I occasionally wear neutral-ish lipgloss on a night out but never reapply during the evening so it's always gone within the first 20 mins. I know as a spring, I 'should'. Can anybody suggest a Revlon lip butter that is springish? I gather they are more sheer than full lipstick so might be a good way for me to start trying lip colour out! Thank you

This any good does anyone think?
Need a coat, well, want a coat...!

www.landsend.co.uk/Women%27s_Regular_SunShower_Coat/pp/3416072.html

and/or this?

Find it hard not just to find the right colours but to actually look at the clothes themselves... Think I am prob some kind of classic mixed with ingénue or somethin'...like a bit of sparkle and quirky things but have been described as dressing like someone from the House of Elliot (kind of liked that?!). Am I being blinded by the brights folks? Hmm

Wish I had patience or time to knit. Did once do two scarves. Chunky wool was good as it felt like I was working very quickly Grin

Fooogle · 02/10/2013 11:19

BeginnerSAHM we had awful moth trouble several years ago (we actually paid someone to 'fumingate' the house to get rid of them!). They do seem to like a munch on any tiny stains or sweaty (sorry!) bits of clothing so wearing them and not washing I can understand will be tempting to the blighters. The random bits of cashmere I've acquired from bargain hunting only get washed once in a blue moon though if clean looking, as I dread hand-washing stuff so mine go away dirty Blush

BeginnerSAHM · 02/10/2013 12:09

Thanks fooogle... Not so keen on getting somebody in to fumigate but I'll investigate! Feeling really unhygienic now Blush!!

Goodness, miss the thread for a few days and you've all been very busy! Welcome new folks.

Foogle I bought a green 'swing car' coat from Lands End last month JGR here - perfect Spring colour and style good (IMO anyway!).

I'm in the zone today with a knitted skirt which is a myriad of colours predominantly pinks and a pink button up top plus plain stone scarf and tan/croc skin shoes.

I'm eyeing up this dress which I spied in the window of Monsoon. It's a bit dark for us but I love the style.

BeginnerSAHM · 02/10/2013 13:18

Hi Birdy! I LOVE that coat. Totally gorgeous. Sadly (or not!), I have a totally serviceable and quite nice navy coat so not in the market for one but that green is fab...

Now, is this scarf Spring-ie??

I am still dithering about the style day. Think I might might do it anyway even though the consultant's style seems, umm, a little dated to me... But I keep thinking, SURELY I know what styles I like and suit me. I've been Trinny and Susannah-ed savvy for YEARS and am quite sure I don't like pretty bows and frills, nor do I like the "masculine" look. Classic natural or Classic ingenue. I think Wink!

BeginnerSAHM
that is a really pretty scarf. I wonder if that has lilac on? Never know if I can carry that off myself but the red-dy coral splashes are great.

Nice dress BirdyBedtime. not sure my lumps and bumps can do it but looks great for tights and boots...

Is the vote that the Lands End Swing coat is better than the collarless one? Collarless one is half price just now...Wink but not sure if it'll remain a classic...

BirdyBedtime · 02/10/2013 14:19

Beginner - wow that scarf is just beautiful (as is the dress in the same design) but I wonder if the blue is a bit too lilac-y, although the other colours are just great for springs.

I've never felt the need to do the style day as I'm pretty confident about what suits me and I don't think I need a label on it. The Monsoon dress linked above with tights and boots is just my style (hmm, do I really need another sweater dress? ........ ah well, you can't have too many, and it would do for work or casual).

Mumelie · 02/10/2013 14:54

Oh no Beginner not moths! We were plagued with them in our old house - ate the carpets as well as clothing. eventually got rid with plenty of cleaning and a spray to kill them off. I'd get someone in to fumigate. It's the price of a decent jumper and will save in the long run.
Love the scarf btw Wink

Not sure I'm totally spring today - navy fine jumper Espirit, pupley blue floral full mini skirt M&S with purple tights and tan knee boots from Jones. Feeling cosy though Grin

ebaymad · 02/10/2013 15:20

That's a lovely dress BirdyBedtime, i really like the fit and flare style dresses, gorgeous in the red too.

I can't knit but i would love to give it a go. I remember my mum knitting millions of loads of squares when i was a child for a blanket that she never finished.

I would be so proud wearing a scarf i knitted, even it was a holey disaster! Grin

BeginnerSAHM That scarf is gorgeous!

ebaymad · 02/10/2013 15:22

Fooogle Swing coat is much nicer, wrinkle resistant too!

BirdyBedtime · 03/10/2013 13:41

Oops, we'd slipped onto page 3 there ladies!

Foogle - if you do go for the coat ignore what it says on the site about ordering a size up. I'm a 12 and based on what the site said considered the 14 as it will be worn with jumpers and thick cardis in winter. Decided not to and went with the UK 12 (8 in LE sizing) and it's fine, or even a tad on the big side (but will be fine with jumpers etc). A 14 would have been like a sack.

BirdyBedtime · 03/10/2013 13:43

ebaymad - I know the red is great. I've got quite a lot of red in my wardrobe already which is why I thought the teal. I'd actually love both but can't justify it.

Aquelven · 03/10/2013 14:51

That coat is gorgeous, Birdy. Love the teal & the green. I have a teal duffel coat that I haven't worn for a couple of winters, will have to dig it out now instead of my usual black.

Moths. You can buy very effective deterrents to hang in the wardrobe to stop the little blighters. It isn't the moths themselves that do the damage but their pesky offspring, the larvae. No need to resort to stinky moth balls these days. You can buy little plastic thingies filled with odourless deterrent, usually two in a box. I get them in Morrisons but I expect other supermarketsor hardware shops sell them, about £2-3 a box. If you hang one on the rail it will keep them away. You need to change them after six months. I put them in the cupboard where some of my jumpers get stored over summer too, one per wardrobe or cupboard.
I you feel really anal you can use lavender bags or cedar wood blocks too, smell nice but not so effective on their own as the plastic thingies. Or even more obsessive, put your woolly in a plastic bag & pop it in the freezer overnight. That will kill any lurking larvae.

Yes, I can knit. My husband says it is not so much a hobby as an affliction as I always have at least three things on the go. Can't sit & watch telly without knitting needles on the go, so usually have a really intricate pattern for when it's a boring programme & something more straightforward for when it's too riveting to concentrate Grin. I learned when I was a child from my gran who did the most amazing, delicate things in crochet & knitting. Her things were so gorgeous that she was persuaded to sell some upmarket shops in New York when they were spotted at a church bazaar by a buyer who was over here visiting a relative. I was lucky to spend all my school holidays with her & learning from her.

Aquelven · 03/10/2013 14:53

Please excuse spelling, grammar mistakes in previous post Blush typing on the phone.

ebaymad · 03/10/2013 15:33

I think you should get the teal, then come back here and tell me how great it so i can go and buy it as well Grin

GlassesDontSuitMe · 03/10/2013 16:27

Aque, that is exactly how I do my knitting and exactly how I learned! My husband also comments, he usually asks me if I'll be click clacking this evening Hmm My grandma could also crotchet beautiful delicate things. I have never been able to master it though, even in it's most basic form.

I found a website the other day with the most gorgeous 1940's knitting patterns. I have saved it in my to do list, otherwise I shall be splurging on wool and end up with things not finished.

I haven't got any exciting buys to share sadly. I did buy a navy coat but it fits like a sack so is going back. I love the lands end ones, but really need navy to fill a gap. I am a bit fed up of the shops and their lack of springy stuff. I have decided to save my pennies and wait until spring Grin

wools · 03/10/2013 16:58

Saw this today. It's described as orange but is definitely a coral pink - really lovely.
www.clothingattesco.com/knitwear/f+f-signature-cashmere-v-neck-jumper/invt/bm322210/

Great price for cashmere too. Can feel another purchase coming on!!

Aquelven · 03/10/2013 17:35

That looks coral to me too, Wools. I like the blue as well, is it us do you think or more Winter?
If you can hang on a bit Tesco often run offers on their knitwear going into winter, either knocking £10-£20 off the cashmere or bringing in the points swap where you can trade any vouchers you have for double the value to use on clothing.

Aquelven · 03/10/2013 17:39

Someone please talk me out of wanting a black leather biker jacket Confused
It's coming up to my birthday & been asked what I'd like & that's what I want Blush .... My son's no use, he's encouraging me!

BeginnerSAHM · 03/10/2013 17:39

Really like that wools. And I like the long line v neck for £55. The orange looks more orange in that though (peachy pale orange) but grey would be handy. Not sure about sizes - they only have a size 6 or bigger sizes. I like slightly bigger tops to wear with skinnies - i'm often a size 6 or 8 on top but have a larger bum (size 8 or 10) so won't buy the longline jumper in a 6!!

OP posts:
BeginnerSAHM · 03/10/2013 17:40

p.s. Aquelven - like the blue too... Am sure we can wear that, especially if a blue or bright spring ...Confused?!

OP posts:
Aquelven · 03/10/2013 17:44

Glasses, do you go on Ravelry?

I'm hopeless if I'm let loose in a wool shop, go in for one thing & come out with a couple of bags full Blush
If I'm desperate for a bit of retail therapy & fed up with the stuff in the shops I take myself off to a big wool barn an hour's drive away & go on a bender Grin

BirdyBedtime · 03/10/2013 20:38

I think the blue F&F jumper is ok for us. I'm wearing a Gap polo neck today that's very similar and pretty close to the blue in our swatches -I'd call it electric blue but I think HoC call it something else.

Aquelven -d'you know if you wore a black biker jacket with a bright scarf, other springy stuff and lippy I bet you'd look fab. But if you're trying to be absolutely true to the whole thing you might end up regretting it. That's not much help is it?

Fooogle · 03/10/2013 20:49

Oooo, do wish I could knit though I can imagine I'd start about twenty things and finish none...v Envy of you guys who know how!

Just ordered two cardi's from uniqlo in a teal (I hope!) and orange which looks more peachy? Hoping they ll lift a few dull things I've got... Also some skinny grey jegging trousers (could be awful!). Tend only to wear jeans or brown/camel work trousers so may not be wise move but you guys seem to like your grey!

The tesco cashmere looks lovely.

Where was your navy coat from Glasses?

Still on ankle type boot hunt and actually not many funds so should probably stop!

Got lipsticks from HoC and practicing a v orange one... Feel bit daft!

Fooogle · 03/10/2013 20:58

I always feel slightly wrong when I wear black as know not meant to but i m not good at transgressing rules! Grin
Can you find a brown one Aque?... Wink
