HoC Spring thread....

BeginnerSAHM · 12/08/2013 19:00

This is a thread for all of us who have had their colours done' by House of Colour and are a Spring. (And 'believe' in it...Wink.) Or, by CMB and are 'clear and warm'. Think a few other CMB catergories might be spring too - 'soft and warm' maybe/' warm and clear' (different from 'clear and warm' because of the order of priorities/dominance...)?

Feel free to ask any Spring-related fashion/make-up/style questions on this thread.... (I won't know the answer but lots of people on these boards will!)

So, I'll start with a 'spring' question.... I never wear lipstick. I occasionally wear neutral-ish lipgloss on a night out but never reapply during the evening so it's always gone within the first 20 mins. I know as a spring, I 'should'. Can anybody suggest a Revlon lip butter that is springish? I gather they are more sheer than full lipstick so might be a good way for me to start trying lip colour out! Thank you

Quick dash round outlet mall here today resulted in a lush tan Coach bag, down from 400 dollars to 140... It would have been rude not too, similar to this but in tan with gold trim

BirdyBedtime · 27/09/2013 13:07

Love the bag Gillybobs and as you say - a 'bargain'.

I definitely find dressing in the right colours easier in spring (no surprise there) and summer just because our colours lend themselves to dresses/skirts etc rather than trousers. All of my trousers are in the darker colours and so I feel less 'springy'.

Although today I'm wearing my favourite blouse - coral with big daisy patterns - splashes of yellow/ green and (shh) black - with skinnies that are just a bit darker than our slate grey. Off out for dinner with some colleagues after work so hurrah for Fridays.

Joycey29 · 27/09/2013 19:07

Ok, so I had a day with no kids and went shopping!! Went to John Lewis in search of tops in Kin but couldn't see any in my colour.
Sooooooo.....
I spent £187 on two cardigans, one dark teal, one light mint, a long sleeve top in French navy and a green long sleeve top.
Oh and a bra in my new size - thanks to bra thread!
My credit card took the hammering but I know I won't get a chance like that again!!
Also convinced my mate to have her colours done!
Feeling good! Ready for the weekend!GrinGrinGrinGrin1

Aquelven · 27/09/2013 20:14

That bag is gorgeous, Gilliybobs, & such a bargain!
Your buys sound great too, Joycey.

I'm just catching up with everyone's posts. Been away for a few days, last minute, spur of the moment decision as was beginning to climb the walls after being confined for weeks, so we chucked the dogs & a bag in the van & took off to Scotland.
I had some brilliant finds in a couple of cashmere factory shops. I stuck to our colours & got four jumpers for £30 each Grin but did veer off course with a pale blue one that I found in my size for an unbelievable £12, so would have been rude not to now wouldn't it???

Mumelie · 28/09/2013 17:04

Hi Springs Grin
Just bumping our thread back up there! Wink
I've been out on a little shopping trip today and bought a lovely bright blue tunic in Joules and a black dress in TK Maxx - yes I know Black - but with the right Cardi and make up it'll be ok - won't it? AW dressing is hard for our season - it's all so dull. I went for Black to get that contrast with another bright colour
Btw love your new bag Gillybobs and hope your having a lovely time in the sun (not jealous at all Envy ).
Today I'm wearing a bright blue GAP cotton baggy jumper, my grey skinnies and tan leather converse. Only stud earrings but tried to keep some lippy on all day Grin

wools · 28/09/2013 17:35

Love the bag too Gillybobs. Aquelven - that is a fantastic price for cashmere. You can always add a scarf in our colours to the light blue jumper to make it work. I wouldn't have been able to leave such a bargain behind either. I've made a few purchases myself - cream coloured silk shirt, coated chocolate brown jeggings from M&S, grey cashmere crew neck jumper from h&m and a red wool scarf from TK Maxx.

Those are lovely, Wools. Pure silk & cashmere from H&M are wonderful bargains & such lovely classic styles they will last forever.

Today I'm wearing a striped, cowl neck tunic in two shades of grey with dark denim jeans & a deep blue lambs wool hoody from Woolovers that I bought last year but they still have.

jumpinghoops · 28/09/2013 21:54

Wools, love all your purchases, can I ask is the jumper marked as S/M/L? They have them as 10-12. 14-16 etc. on the website, I think though that although usually a 10, the M is about right.

wools · 29/09/2013 03:32

Jumpinghoops I bought a medium and am an average size 12.

Joycey29 · 29/09/2013 21:45

Loving the look of those Wools!

Just planned tomorrows outfit to win over Ofsted inspector! Gone for teal top under navy dress. Teal tights and navy suede boots! Need splash of colour and lippy x

I have just been on the winter thread and they think I look warm toned. I know I am not an autumn or a summer. Could I be a spring? I can't wear any shade of pink in lipstick and clothing but really suit a true red. I need a lot of contrast in my clothing and need a strong coloured lipstick or I look washed out.

Any help much appreciated.

Gillybobs · 30/09/2013 01:30

How are you in corally lippy? You look like a winter or a bright spring to me. Coral/orange is a no no for winters I believe so should help you decide.

jumpinghoops · 30/09/2013 02:23

Thanks Wools!

SteppedOnaFrog · 30/09/2013 07:11

Gilly I think I can wear a clear orange but not a coral pink. Bright turquoise and clear red work well as well. I can pull off black but it's better with a bit of contrast. Really bright blues, purples and greens I am told suit me. No pink though except a raspberry red and even then it's not my best red.

Thanks for you suggestions x

Aquelven · 30/09/2013 09:59

I think you might be some sort of winter, a bright or clear one if there is such a thing....not clued up on winters.
The raspberry red being wearable but not coral pink doesn't sound very Spring.
Try on a bright orangey lipstick & then a raspberry/ bluish toned red one, that might help. I'm a Blue Spring so none of the coral/ peach/ tan colours in clothes are my best colours but with lipstick any shade of coral/peach/ orange suits me far, far better than any raspberry/mauve/blue red which instantly make me look like death not even warmed up a bit. Confused

alemci · 30/09/2013 10:19

yes I think winter as well.

BeginnerSAHM · 30/09/2013 11:40

Steppedonafrog - I think winter too, based on the raspberry lippy. Coral lipstick doesn't look brilliant on me but coral tops do... And i look awful in fuscia and can only wear black with skin showing and a lot of make-up! When you buy foundation, do you get matched to yellow based or pink based tones? I get yellow toned or sometimes 'neutral' depending on the brand as I think I am more neutral than lots of springs.

I was misdiagnosed as a winter 8 years ago! But I look so much better in spring colours (and had it confirmed by a consultant recently).

Are you able to get your colours 'done' properly?

Wools - love the cashmere...!

And Aquelven - that website is a revelation... I shall be having a browse later! The hoody looks v cosy.

Gillybobs - sounds like you're having fun Wink. And the bag was a bargain!!

Hello everyone

I've been lurking with interest and think I have just about read the thread.
Vague waffly questions really...Sorry in advance!

Want an everyday lipstick that does all the popping things but doesn't make me feel daft... any further tips. Any good ones from Jane Fardon others have used? Have ordered a couple from House of Colour as they were reduced to £2.50! One is called shocking pink so liable to be mad. I am a terrible lipstick collector and yet an infrequent wearer!

Also, I'm trying to get a better look for SAHM days...have skinny next dark jeans...then often wear blouses (liberty prints from Ebay as I seem to suit a blouse) but need some good cardi's to go over them that wash and wear well but aren't totally blank? Thinking a good navy type, have a lovely yellow one on its last legs... Anyone found good ones?

And a coat?...have a La Redoute red one but its on its way out... pref an over bum or even a belted affair... weather tolerant...?

Also on hunt for boots. Have knee high brown leather old ones...would like some ankle ones that are cool with jeans in the right colours that are actually wearable - I walk hard and dash in parks on wet days etc... Know it is the holy grail but... like sam Edelman ones but leather soles won't cut it I don't think.

Obviously all this on a peppercorn amount...any helpful pitying folk with tips?! I'm not very good at shopping. Look a lot online and then buy and realize all wrong...end up finding things in charity shops instead!

Aquelven · 30/09/2013 14:23

Hello Fooogle Grin
Welcome to the spring thread. Have you been draped or are you guessing what you are?

For cardies, well all woollies really, this is a good firm. I've bought from them, not too expensive, great quality that washes well & a lovely firm to deal with.
www.woolovers.com/

I love that HoC shocking pink lippy. Not all the springs here do, it's a bit violent, a real shocker of a pink but if you're more blue than warm spring it's fab. There are some good colours in the shops too though. Just discovered No7 Coral Rose ( or might be Rose Coral Hmm ) either way it's one of the Moisture Drench ones & a good reddish coral & their Waterlily is a bit more subtle. I love Mischief but that's more along the lines of HoC shocking pink. Some of the Revlon Lip Butters are good & Clarins do some gorgeous corals in their glossy lipstick range. I have a few of those but can't remember the colour names without going for a rummage in my vast Blush stash.
Haven't bought anything from Jane Fardon.

Boots, sorry can't really help as haven't been looking as it's too depressing looking at gorgeous boots with no prospect of being able to get my swollen hoof into them any time this winter. Confused

Aquelven · 30/09/2013 14:23

Link, sorry Blush
www.woolovers.com/

Fooogle · 30/09/2013 14:44

Thanks Aquelven! Glad someone else has a similar lippy weakness... The thing is I love the idea of having to don my lippy to feel dressed a la 1950s housewife though usually I feel too scruffy and bit like mutton dressed as... I'm looking forward to trying shocking pink when it arrives.

Also, today I am at work and have a peachy oasis blouse on and kind of taupe? trousers and tan ankle boots...do you feel it looks too tacky to have a bright lip when you are in lighter shades?

I had my colours done about 5 years ago. Had it done at CMB and think I was a warm spring (though bit hazy and annoyingly I lost my wallet of colours and when I went to replace they had slightly renamed? I recall my sister being a clear spring I think though she has brown hair and brown eyes). Have blue eyes and basically warm mousey hair that used to be very fair when I was little (some time ago now!). Skin fairly fair. Usually a kind of porcelain/ivory kind of a foundation is the best of a bad match...

Would love to have the style day but do I have to have HoC colours done first? I'm intrigued by the whole amounts of contrast thing in the unicorn lady's website... My eyebrows are fairish, hair mid tone... eyes v blue so should I not go too crazy with different tones and just have subtle gradations do you think? Sorry I am thinking aloud I guess!

Will look again at woolovers Aquelven. Felt the shapes along with my liberty shirts may look a bit too 'to the manor born' but maybe passable! Also like a good vintage silk scarf so maybe I am just that way inclined.

You guys always sound so nicely dressed. I am a bit Envy

Looking at these for feet, first a bit clunky manly I fear and the second prob too high for real life...and the last...god knows where I think I'll wear them...thinking with taupey tights?...and...?!!! returns quite soon then! No idea if this is how you link...

Aquelven · 30/09/2013 15:31

Oooh, I love that last pair Envy

Last week I bought these
www.marksandspencer.com/Footglove-Leather-Ruched-Ankle-Boots/dp/B002F7NP30?ie=UTF8&ref=sr_1_86&nodeId=2040225031&sr=1-86&qid=1380550386
Because they were the only thing I could get my foot into( apart from a pair of ancient Birkenstocks, chilly!). None of my shoes will go onSad channelling Ugly Sister syndrome at the moment.
I was hoping for more like this but no chance yet
www.marksandspencer.com/Indigo-Collection-Suede-Studded-Insolia®/dp/B0053UOBM0?ie=UTF8&ref=sr_1_71&nodeId=2040225031&sr=1-71&qid=1380550567

I'm still getting my head round the contrast thing. Luckily I don't have to bother too much as my consultant reckoned that for a spring I should stick more to toning as I have such low contrast in my colouring. I too have the palest shade of spring skin, always have to buy the palest foundation shade in any range, some don't have one pale enough, very light blonde hair( virtually white) brows the same, eyes turquoise. Without makeup I'd resemble a ghost Confused

And...oh no!! I'm not usually well dressed Blush today scruffy jeans & old faded( but grey Grin ) top as, much like usual,I've been bathing & grooming the dogs all day.

Fooogle · 30/09/2013 16:08

Well, we'll see if my wide feet fit the turquoise ones! Like those M and S studded ones. May order some in to try at a store. I seem to never quite see everything on their site as thought I'd looked through all the many pages of boots!

Sorry your foot is still curtailing your footwear Sad.
My ultimate practical mum voice is in the background telling me not to get suede...hard to avoid this season!

hopefully some other folk can give us some more pointers on contrast and lippy! So does shocking pink really work with your pale tones. Don't think I am as fair as you...think I have quite an underlying yellow ness too... Nice!

Either of these good for us springs? In danger of making up my colours I think!

ebaymad · 30/09/2013 18:02

Hi Ladies. I'm a long time lurker on the thread and am looking for some advice.

I am sure I'm a spring, I have Strawberry Blonde hair, blue eyes, pale skin which is slightly pink without make-up.
But I've just read somewhere that said if you have blue veins you are a Summer or a Winter?

I suit Warm colours like Tomato-Red and have a great orangey lipstick that looks good.

I don't want to be a Summer...

Aquelven · 30/09/2013 18:23

Hi ebaymad Smile
I was convinced I'd be a summer as I'd scrutinised my veins in every light possible & to me they didn't look green. Not exactly blue either, just couldn't make it out, though my skin over them on my wrist did have a creamy pale rather than a pinky pale colour. Thought I might just be winter, never entered my head I'd be spring.
You might be a Blue Spring like me, veering more neutral than very warm with best colours that are all the blues, greens, turquoises rather than oranges, yellows. The orange lipstick sounds very spring, or autumn but you sound too fair for that. Our red is one of my two star colours...never thought red suited me!
With your hair your skin could be very like mine. My son is a light coppery redhead( gets mugged by girls as he's the double of Damien Lewis Grin ) & his skin is the exact colour of mine.
