HoC Spring thread....

BeginnerSAHM · 12/08/2013 19:00

This is a thread for all of us who have had their colours done' by House of Colour and are a Spring. (And 'believe' in it...Wink.) Or, by CMB and are 'clear and warm'. Think a few other CMB catergories might be spring too - 'soft and warm' maybe/' warm and clear' (different from 'clear and warm' because of the order of priorities/dominance...)?

Feel free to ask any Spring-related fashion/make-up/style questions on this thread.... (I won't know the answer but lots of people on these boards will!)

So, I'll start with a 'spring' question.... I never wear lipstick. I occasionally wear neutral-ish lipgloss on a night out but never reapply during the evening so it's always gone within the first 20 mins. I know as a spring, I 'should'. Can anybody suggest a Revlon lip butter that is springish? I gather they are more sheer than full lipstick so might be a good way for me to start trying lip colour out! Thank you

Hmm. Thanks gillybobs! Expensive lesson learnt!!

Ok, I appreciate Vegas Volt might be a tough sell after Gillybobs and I both think it makes our teeth look yellow Confused but Ravishing is on the unicorn lady's list as a spring-appropriate lippy and it's a 'sheer' one so not too intense... Any takers?? I am NEVER happy with lipsticks (well, very rarely) so don't be too put off by the fact that i don't want to wear it!! It's free.... (Will stop hawking my make-up mistakes after this post, promise Wink.)

You're right Gillybobs - I'm a clear spring and we're told to wear two colours and a splash - mine is usually jewellery (I have a variety of beaded necklaces in brigh spring colours) or a scarf, but it can also be a colour in pattern, shoes, bag etc. I have a great green bag that is perfect when wearing more muted colours to brighten things up.

Today I'm in a blue and red patterned dress (white Stuff) with navy cardi, red pumps and my necklace is turquoise.

Because I have spent the last few years spring-ifying my wardrobe several of the items that I bought soon after being done are now beginning to need replaced. This summer I bought 2 new cardis from Monsoon to replace well-worn ones (yellow and red). They were quite expensive but at cost per wear have done really well and hopefully the new ones will last as long.

On the lipstick point I've stuck with HoC ones (1 and 347 for me) as have never found any suitable colours in the shops but I must not have been looking hard enough seeing all of the recommendations above. I wasn't one for lippy every day before having my colours done, but am a total convert and feel bare now without.

alemci · 06/09/2013 12:25

I still really like wearing Pink Goddess which is a buttershine lipstick by Clinique. Don't know if this is a correct spring colour but I find it flattering.

Aquelven · 06/09/2013 12:43

I don't remember my consultant mentioning the 3 colour rule on my colour day. But then she could well have done, as I mentioned earlier I was a bit overwhelmed on my day with all the family hangers on who turned up to watch the two sisters who happened to have booked on the same session as me. If I'd known before booking about that I'd have asked for a different day.

Lipsticks, I'm still liking the No7 Coral Rose & found another of theirs I had, Watermelon, which seems to work well, on me anyway. For reds I've only got the HoC 606. I also love their Shocking Spring Pink which Mumelie hated but I'm a funny spring too as if I had pink eyes I'd be albinoConfused

Gillybobs · 06/09/2013 13:00

Birdy your outfit sounds great!

Alemci the pink goddess looks very summery to me but could be my monitor

Joycey29 · 06/09/2013 13:14

Today I was wearing grey trousers, French navy jumper and sea green scarf. Grin
Now coaching games in scuzzy games kit! Boo!Hmm

BeginnerSAHM · 06/09/2013 13:18

Hi all - Ravishing has gone! Vegas Volt still there if anybody has nice white teeth and wants to give it a try Wink. Looks lovely in some pics when I googled it....

OP posts:
alemci · 06/09/2013 14:02

could be gilly but I am a light spring so I can probably get away with it plus do some of the warmer lipsticks make your teeth look yellow

alemci · 06/09/2013 16:12

the kettlewell spring colours look amazing and tbh aren't far out from alot in my wardrobe

BeginnerSAHM · 06/09/2013 16:39

Hi all - Vegas volt gone now too...

Has anyone bought from Kettlewell?
Their t shirt sort of things look quite expensive, are they better quality than the usual high street offerings?
They do have some terrific colours which can be hard to find at this time of year.

Mumelie · 06/09/2013 17:50

Aquelven I think I maybe coming round to the Shocking Spring Pink lipstick after all! I have quite a tan at the moment and think it will look good against pale winter skin.
Todays outfit was a navy cropped cardi, teal/aqua wrap dress and grey shoe boots.
I'm keen to know what kettlewell is like too - not had anything from there yet!

alemci · 06/09/2013 18:55

my mum buys from them in sales and she rates their quality. They are into the house of colour and the colours are just gorgeous IMO but yes they are expensive

BeginnerSAHM · 06/09/2013 20:03

I didn't really like the styles of kettlewell (t-shirt sleeves looked a weird length) but maybe i should give a couple of vests etc a go!

Let us know what you think if you get anything Grin!

marzipananimal · 06/09/2013 20:18

I tried on a couple of kettlewell things at my colour day and although the colours were great, the fabric seemed a bit middle aged for me if that makes sense (I'm in my twenties)

alemci · 06/09/2013 20:23

well my mum is in her 70sGrin but I may buy the odd thing too. clever marketing

evelynj · 06/09/2013 22:00

Been loving this thread -awaiting to get colours done but pretty sure I'm spring & bought the no 7 mischief today & revlon tutti frutti-buy one get one half price in boots over many brands.

Any more recs on cheaper brands gratefully received-agree that the indoor lighting is really hard to tell so you need to put tester on & go outside! Also take a mirror as the plastic strip in my boots was utter rubbish!

I'm going about it an odd way as have 7 week old baby & lot of weight to lose but think it's good to start the learning curve now!

If anyone buys or browses in supermarket lines or cheaper high st stores please note any good buys.

Dunno if this link will work but is this good for a budget coral scarf?

Cheers all :)

BeginnerSAHM · 06/09/2013 22:23

Oooh - like it evelyn! Perfect for spring. Reckon the blue one might be ok too but hard to tell on my phone Wink! 7 week old baby?!? Ahhhhhhh! Reckon scarves will be pulled quite a lot over the next few years!

I'm going to experiment with cheaper lipsticks too Blush. Will let everyone know how I get on!

Goodnight all!

Hi there
I was diagnosed in a basic way as just a "spring" in the 1980s and then later as a Light Honey-Toned Spring by an organisation called Beauty for All Seasons. I look particularly good in warm russet red, yellowy greens like this and strong corals though my "pallette" has a lot of turquoisy greens and paler pinks/ peaches too.

I have a couple of questions - would anyone want to hazard a guess as to which HOC spring I might be?

I see a lot of talk on this thread about navy. I've only ever been given a very weird navy (a dark french navy) in my pallettes that I've hardly ever been able to find. Do you think I can wear other more "normal" navys?

BeginnerSAHM · 07/09/2013 12:20

Hi - the 30% off in Gap runs out today and was thinking about this .... What do you think? Springy enough?

(By the way, recently had a marketing email from consultant referring to my 'blue spring' colours so guess I am a blue spring then Wink. Despite her thinking I looked great in top to toe tan Confused.)

OP posts:
wools · 07/09/2013 12:39

Love that scarf BeginnerSAHM. I think that navy and green are a lovely combination. Weird about the tan thing. I'm a blue spring and whilst I love tan shoes and handbags - that's about as far as it goes.

Aquelven · 07/09/2013 13:47

That is odd.
I'm a blue spring too & tan is only rated very low on my booklet, just for shoes, bags etc. my best colours are all blues, turquoises, greys & some greens, plus one red.

Lovely scarves, both links. Evelynj most of those colours look spring to me, great price too. Thank goodness for scarves, I say, means most of my wardrobe is not completely redundant.

Made a mistake, the other No7 lipstick that I have is Waterlily, not Watermelon. Mischief, I agree is great. Funnily enough was my favourite shade even before.
I've just received a new Kettlewell catalogue in the post this morning, not had time to look at it yet.

Do you read the threads for the other seasons?
Must admit I do. Interesting to see the links, incase stuff comes in our colours. But then, perhaps I'm just nosey eh? Grin

Aquelven · 07/09/2013 13:52

educatingarti
Sorry, didn't mean to ignore your question Blush
I find I can wear all navy shades. It's my best basic for suiting my colouring. I suppose it's how my consultant said use your swatch book as a guide, see if things tone with it, that way you can wear hundreds of colours not just exact matches.

What's your colouring, hair, eyes etc? That way we might be able to hazard a guess, HoC wise.

educatingarti · 07/09/2013 14:53

OK - I have very fair skin. Not red-head fair but probably only the next shade up. I can tan a bit in the summer but only to a kind of rich tea biscuit colour! My skin definitely has a yellow base rather than a blue base. I have grey-blue eyes. My hair is a warm mid-blonde but has some very light and some quite dark and some auburn strands within it fading a bit as the grey comes through but some semi-permanent dye sorts that I have quite pale/blonde eyebrows. I also look really good in tans/terracottas.

I'd be really interested if people thought I might be able to wear a range of navys as I've steered clear for a long while!

The person who did my colours years ago said my best basics were a deep russet red, cream and a very pale biscuit/beige brown colour (almost a dark cream) plus this very dark navy I can never find! The deep russet red is not always easy to find and the other colours are not always practical for work. I tend to wear a lot of browns (boring) and I'v ealso been told I look good in a really dark brown but it isn't in my "official" colour pallette.
