following on from the 'fashions you don't understand' thread, which 'must have' classic items of clothing are just a washout for you?

Mine is a trenchcoat - it looks shit on me.
Also those boucle chanel-type jackets - fuck I age 30 yrs putting one of those on.

Chanel No5. A classic? Smells like Mr Pledge (furniture polish) on me.

dexter73 · 04/08/2013 17:09

The only problem with a single breasted trench coat is that you could possibly end up looking like Arkwright from Open all Hours!

mypavlova · 04/08/2013 17:14

dexter73 yikes!

NoelHeadbands · 04/08/2013 17:17

Anything that's supposed to make me look French, because French women wear them.

Why? Why am I supposed to look French? I mean, I like the French. I certainly like their food, I know a coupe of lovely French ladies. But I'm not French. Not even in a classic Breton top and back cigarette pant

NoelHeadbands · 04/08/2013 17:18

Arf at Arkwright Grin

MarshaBrady · 04/08/2013 17:18

On the other hand classics I like

ballet flats
Cashmere sweater
simple t shirts
skinny belt -esp calf hair
I do like a trench with belt, but not too long

But I don't like overly long too much fabric coats.
Or funnel neck coats
And double breasted with gold buttons

NoComet · 04/08/2013 17:39

Double breasted buttons on anything.

I have wide hips, narrow shoulders and small boobs.

If it's fits round my hips, a double breasted jacket fits nowhere else. I might as well wear a box with a head hole.

I don't much like double breasted jackets on anyone, DH looks wrong in them too.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 04/08/2013 17:48

Shoes with bows or flowers. Usually ballet flats or heels. Just why? I like a plain shoe, much more elegant.

Coats with three quarter length sleeves - again why? Coats are supposed to keep you warm.

Any coat that you have to wear buttoned up or it looks all wrong, so that's double breasted, funnel necks etc.

Heels higher than about 4 inches, especially the ones with hidden platforms.

MadBusLady · 04/08/2013 17:52

Knee high boots. They make my perfectly normal knees look like two nicely done shortcrust pies escaping from the casserole dish.

And yes to black trousers. Can't do them unless I am having a ninja day and it's head to toe black, and even then I'd rather do jeans.

SwedishEdith · 04/08/2013 18:06

Oh, god, I look horrible in shirts. I think it's something to do with the collar interfering with the hair length. But hair shorter than the collar would make me look like a man.

PaulSmenis · 04/08/2013 18:13

I don't like crips white shirts. Other people can look elegant in them, but I just feel and look like a tool. I'm always spilling coffee down myself, so it's better to avoid white at all costs.

LadyMilfordHaven · 04/08/2013 18:49

Polo dresses. Members ?

LadyMilfordHaven · 04/08/2013 18:49

Lol at crips. In da hood man

MarshaBrady · 04/08/2013 19:01

this with plimsolls. Private club or spa resort. They don't look bad as young, but makes me think of that.

MarshaBrady · 04/08/2013 19:04

Agree with the bows on shoes and any frills.

vitaminC · 04/08/2013 19:07

It really is a matter of different strokes for different folks. Everything most people hate on this thread seems to be what suits me best, as a warm autumn hourglass:
Trench coat: check
Wrap dress: check
A line skirts: check
Straight black trousers: check
Ballet flats: check

Camel is one of the colours that suits me best.

What I can't stand is cropped pants. i already have short legs for my height but they make me look like a dumpy dwarf.

And short sleeves make me look like an American football player with massive shoulders!

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 04/08/2013 19:10

Liking, 'Ninja day.' I have a Ninja day pretty much every day.

Not a classic but two things I absolutely hate to see men in are: flip flops / v necked t-shirts.

MadBusLady · 04/08/2013 20:34

I'm with you on trenches, vitaminC. I had no idea people didn't get on with them so much. They're awesome.

QueenMaeve · 04/08/2013 20:37

Trenchcoat too for me OP. I have never found one that looks good on me

nkf · 04/08/2013 20:42

Hmm. I like most of the things that you all dislike.

MadBannersAndCopPorn · 04/08/2013 20:42

Polar necks make me look like a giraffe jack-in-a-box.

member · 04/08/2013 20:48

Shirts - even a rever collar makes it look like I've no neck. Buttons always look strained across the bust.

Black tailored trousers - thank God naice jeans became acceptable for a night out as btts were my fall back a decade ago
