We did that moving from my old flat to this house. It worked!

Eventually.

herbaceous · 23/08/2013 15:24

Talking of money (sorry MI) I've come to the realisation that as we're not married, if we split up, or DP in some other way decided not to finance the house or something, I'd be financially screwed. No recompense for my career being shot to hell while his has gone stratospheric over the past four years.

The deposit on this house was over £100K, which I paid as the equity from my old flat, and I assumed I'd be able to get back should we have to sell it. Now wondering if I'm being naive.

Difficult to raise the subject without sounding like I'm planning to leave him, or that I'm just after him for his money...

CointreauVersial · 23/08/2013 16:18

Herbs, in essence that's exactly why we decided to get married. I felt very financially precarious once I was a SAHM.

What put the tin lid on it was finding out that DH's generous work pension/life assurance was payable to spouses only, not unmarried partners (it has since changed).

You are being financially sensible, that's all.

herbaceous · 23/08/2013 16:27

Well, indeed. His current job (which he's leaving shortly) has private medical insurance, but for spouses and children only, not Significant Others. Surely this is discriminatory in some way? He should be able to specify who he wants the benefit to go to.

I think I was the beneficiary of his death in service, and all that, however. I may have to resort to greasing the stairs.

Blackduck · 23/08/2013 16:33

We aren't married either - I have thought more and more about it recently, partly because I'm damn if I m going to pay inheritance tax on a portion of a house I paid for....
Financially I am okay ish (no real pension though - I'd need dp's...)

herbaceous · 23/08/2013 16:38

I have no real pension either, just a few dribs and drabs from previous jobs. TBH, I'm relying on my inheritance to fund my retirement - my parents have got a few properties, one of which is due to come to me, and with which I intend to start my mini property empire.

It makes tax complicated, too. I'm self-employed, so can write off 'expenses', such as the mortgage, bills, etc. But I don't technically pay for them, but pay for the childcare that enables the mortgage to be paid, IYSWIM. Never quite know what to put on my return...

motherinferior · 23/08/2013 16:49

Herbs, I very rarely say this, but I think you should MTBGrin

I pay an eye watering £350 a month into a combo of pensions and savings but that will add up to bugger all. And my flat financed our house (DP had squandered the money from his own flat sale - hence our equally eye watering mortgage) and I paid for both maternity leaves...

DP now earns a fair whack and has a pension to which I am entitled but obviously I still bear a number of financial grudgesGrin

Did exchange and complete on same day on last house... Money had transferred and people we were buying off took until 5.00 to move out - I remember bing very pissed off...

herbaceous · 23/08/2013 17:09

ruby - don't worry! There was a minor cock up by the bank, which had ms-typed the amount of money to transfer from me to the seller by 20 grand, so the request bounced and there was a lot of scrabbling about.

MrsSchadenfreude · 23/08/2013 18:04

LOL at MTB! Grin

DH is dismantling a wardrobe and there has been lots of banging and effing and blinding.

motherinferior · 23/08/2013 18:06

I am PMSL at the advice about "your company" on another thread, MrsS..

MrsSchadenfreude · 23/08/2013 18:24
Grin
bigTillyMint · 23/08/2013 20:07

Oh definitely MTB - reader, I did just that Grin

Well DH amd I have had a lovely day biking along the coast to Broadstairs and back, eating and drinking in the sun... Tate in Margarte, fish and chips at a "little shack" on the shore in fancy schmancy Whitstable... Just motoring back now :)

Ruby Im sure itll all work out - and just thinking about that gorgeous place you're going to move into makes me well jel.

Stropperella · 23/08/2013 20:08

Didn't know there was any way to move without doing complete and exchange on the same day. Grin (I have only been involved in buying one house) Good luck, Ruby.

Herbs, definitely MTB or get something down in writing. :) And I hope all you crepeys have got wills, especially if you're not married. Probate's more of a bugger than you realise and spousal pension benefits, death in service payments etc - all a bit more tricky than they should be, as I know to my cost. I could riff on for a very long time about finances, careers taking a hit and the harbouring of financial grudges and how this is all currently a hot topic in our house.

However, that would be v. dull and I would also get v. hot under the collar, so I will move swiftly on.

Dd back from her 3-week jolly in France very relaxed (comparatively speaking). She has had a very educational time, in lots of ways, and I can tell that her horizons have been expanded heathily. She cooked a very nice family supper tonight and has spent the last 2 days at the piano. She played the piano to a fairly good standard until she entered her troubled teen phase 2 years ago and gave up. It's so nice to hear. GCSE year stress is, however, already cranking up in the background, with loads of hw to be completed before the beginning of term.

How did Beachy's dd do, I wonder??

bigTillyMint · 23/08/2013 20:21

Stropps, great to hear that your DD has had a successful summer - hopefully it will stand her in good stead for the challenges that the next year will bring.
And I hope you've made a note of the Crepey meetup and prepared your family to COPE WITHOUT YOU on that weekendWink

motherinferior · 23/08/2013 20:25

We have willsGrin

Have been wondering about the Beachygirl too. And am trying to work out how DD1's school did....

Back to Blighty tomorrow. Am already thinking about warm autumn clothes...pah!

Blackduck · 23/08/2013 20:35

Erm.. We don't have wills (despite the fact brother is a barrister...).

Beachy? Dd?

QueenQueenie · 23/08/2013 20:54

Bloody hell you cohabiters.
Are you clear about any financial consequences in the worst case scenario of one of you dropping dead??
Are houses in joint names? Do you hold as tenants -in - common? Joint tenants? Are savings in joint accounts? Who would inherit any assets if there is no will? How LONG would it take to sort all this out? How EXPENSIVE would it be?
Really. Get married or get sorted (if you're not already).

In other news...
Have bought ankle boots in anticipation of Autumn.
Ds1 did magnificently in his GCSEs so very pleased for him and very relieved.

bigTillyMint · 23/08/2013 21:32

Congratulations to MasterQueenieFlowers

We have no wills, but we are married. Will that do?

Blackduck · 23/08/2013 21:35

Yes QQ I KNOW - trying to get dp to marry me on the QT....
I do know the consequences.....

Blackduck · 23/08/2013 21:38

Okay I think I might have just advertised a po

Cremolafoam · 23/08/2013 21:47

Oh well done young queenie
Grin That's super news.

We aremarried ( although because we got married in Australia dh keeps asking me to confirm that it's realWink)
After dbrother died with a loose and complicated Dutch will we made sure we are willed up to the nines. I have funeral instructions , inheritance specifics , an outline prenup in case dh leaves me holding the baby as it were right down to the silver teaspoons .
As QQ says you do not want to die intestate my friends. Bitter experience ... Blah blah

Also of the understanding that completion exchange and all that happens on the day you move.
This is the fourth house I've owned and always been like that . Keys at the very last moment.
