Engagement rings - coloured stones

Anyone have a coloured stone in their engagement ring? DP has been floating the idea of rings about a bit...looking for hints it seems!

I have seen a stunning tanzanite and diamond ring but worry I'll wish I'd gone more conventional. Also worry about it fitting in with my lifestyle as jeweler warned us coloured stones are more liable to get damaged. If you went for a non diamond were you happy with it?

I know that I will be delighted regardless and the meaning behind it is obviously the most important thing! However would be interested in hearing from anyone with a coloured stone?

I have a large square cut ruby flanked by two baguette diamonds. The setting is both yellow gold (ruby) and white gold (diamonds). It's oldish now but i still get compliments on it 20 years on. In fact, i like the design so much, I'm hoping for some matching earrings come the anniversary!

Chickydoo - a 7 carat sapphire? How very fab and Elizabeth Taylor!

I can remember when i got engaged, a close friend harped on that my new ruby ring was not an engagement ring as it wasn't a diamond solitaire and that was that. It really upset me at the time, but now that she never got married I think I get where she was coming from dysfunctional cow.

Oh and everyone saying Opal - not For the engagement ring, please! It's so so delicate!

specialmagiclady But that was part of the appeal of an opal - I have to look after it, treat it with care, not take it for granted (just like a relationship... Wink)

Bunnymother
It is tres Liz Taylor! & very sparkly & blingy. I wear it all the time! I think most people think it's fake & from H&M, I don't care....I love it!
