Engagement rings - coloured stones

Anyone have a coloured stone in their engagement ring? DP has been floating the idea of rings about a bit...looking for hints it seems!

I have seen a stunning tanzanite and diamond ring but worry I'll wish I'd gone more conventional. Also worry about it fitting in with my lifestyle as jeweler warned us coloured stones are more liable to get damaged. If you went for a non diamond were you happy with it?

I know that I will be delighted regardless and the meaning behind it is obviously the most important thing! However would be interested in hearing from anyone with a coloured stone?

I have a trilogy with a diamond in the middle and two blue sapphires either side. I haven't been married for long (2 years) but I did wobble about whether I should have got the solitaire at the time. Since I got it though, I am pleased I got something a bit different as solitaires, although beautiful in the shop under the sparkly lights, can be a bit boring....

MrsHowardRoark · 14/06/2013 16:45

I have a ruby set in rose gold.

It is a very simple and modern design that DP had commissioned. I love it and it really stands out amoung the sea of diamond solitaires.

EarthMotherImNot · 14/06/2013 16:46

My first engagement ring was a sapphire surrounded by 12 teeny diamonds on a gold band.

I say my first because I lost the sapphire on the morning of our 30th wedding anniversarySad
I think it came out while I was having a bath and it went down the plug as I rinsed out the bath. I can vaguely remember thinking "ooh whats that" as it merrily sailed away.

When we went to get a quote from a jeweller he asked if I wanted sapphire again and almost without thinking I said "no, this time I would love an emerald"

Of the two the emerald is definately the most strikingSmile

I am really enjoying reading about all your lovely rings!

ITCouldBeWorse I have put a lot of consideration into shape and size as I am quite conscious of my hands/fingers...others call them long and elegant, whereas I just think they look huge! I am also very pale so think coloured stones look quite nice against my skintone. These are definitely good things to keep in mind though, thanks!

Yellow sapphire and diamond here. Not regretted it so far!

Quite a lot like this but yellow instead.

therumoursaretrue · 14/06/2013 17:08

faddy i think you are right! The band on the tanzanite ring we saw is yellow gold too, but I think it suits it really well as it's quite a classic shape.

Eldritch that jewelers is fairly local to me and has some lovely rings! A yellow sapphire sounds beautiful!

Pink sapphire and diamond. Never seen it anywhere or on anyone. Much kudos to dh for that....

EldritchCleavage · 14/06/2013 17:13

Sapphire is hard, too (9 on Mohs scale, I think) so second only to diamond. Jade is also v hard. I love jade and diamond rings but I'm waiting for the Euromillions investment plan to come good...

Dackyduddles · 14/06/2013 17:14

Sorry platinum band too, Hatton garden. Recommend!

Retrofairy · 14/06/2013 17:18

I haven't read the whole thread so I'm sure I'm not the first person to say this, but tanzanite is not hard wearing.

I have it in my engagement ring and it is beautiful but it has not worn well, it has not kept its looks over time and I don't feel that I can wear it every day. I have regretted my choice really. I've since seen that it is not particularly recommended for regular use. When we have a bit more money/a significant anniversary I am going to have it changed for a similar light coloured sapphire which I'm hoping will be a bit more durable.

On the subject of having a colour though, I do love that part of it and would not want to change the stone for a clear diamond.

NomDeClavier · 14/06/2013 17:20

I have a dark sapphire with 4 tiny diamonds which DH designed. It's tradition in DH's family to invest in a gemstone for each child which is then either set as an engagement ring or another piece of jewellery - the original idea was the engagement ring. We bought DS a lovely tanzanite.

I never really wanted a diamond. Everyone else had one.

HeartsTrumpDiamonds · 14/06/2013 17:23

OP what's your birthstone?

Jenny70 · 14/06/2013 17:31

I have a pale blue ceylon saphhire with diamond either side, love it still after 15yr, gets lots of comments. We had it reset with heart shaped claw setting, which only I notice, but it's a detail I cherish.

I have done many stupid things that I thought (with hindsight) might have cracked the stone, but nothing - once I benr/cracked a claw and it needed fixing, but not wanting to jinx myself.

therumoursaretrue · 14/06/2013 17:36

retro thanks for your post about the Tanzanite. That is really useful to know. Saw a pretty violet sapphire too so will consider the durability as I definitely would like to wear it every day!

hearts I believe my birthstone is garnet.

I have a diamond, chosen by DH without involving me at all. It is lovely, but I would have absolutely loved to have had a blue opal, something like this maybe Blush

JackieTheFart · 14/06/2013 17:46

Mines lots of tiny little diamonds - don't like solitaires, my hands are too fat!

I would have had any nice stone tbh, DH bought me one by himself which was just cut glass which I didn't want.

I'd love an opal too - my birthstone!

kelda · 14/06/2013 17:47

Mine one is a ruby with diamonds either side. Very pretty. I also have my grandmother's ring which is emerald.

superbadspeller · 14/06/2013 19:03

6 dark blue saphires with 5 diamonds on a gold band - very small and slim fitting, iy's styled like an etetnity ring but i love it so much, the colour worried me but it's never 'clashed' it's slim enough to just add a hint of detail :)

Congratulations when it happens Flowers hpe it's soon!

IceBergJam · 14/06/2013 19:13

Large rectangle dark blue saphire with a triangle diamond either side. Platinum base. Love it.

mrsspongebob · 14/06/2013 19:15

Mine is a yellow diamond solitaire.

TheOneAndOnlyAlpha · 14/06/2013 19:22

Tiny rows of sapphires and diamonds, more like an eternity ring than an engagement ring. It's just lovely. Dh picked it out and it's perfect. I never wanted a solitaire, the majority of my friends have them, and although they are beautiful, I can't tell the £200 one from the £5000 one!

VioletGoesVintage · 14/06/2013 19:24

I have a 3 carat dark blue sapphire - sort of triangular shaped - with two baguette diamonds set in the arms (if that makes sense) of the ring, which is platinum. Love it. It's from a jewellery designer in Hatton Garden, and I had fun going through a sparkly array of sapphires to pick the one I wanted.

SomeDizzyWhore1804 · 14/06/2013 19:26

I have a vintage engagement and wedding ring- both have coloured stones. The engagement is garnets in yellow gold in a really unusual twisty design an the wedding ring is a gold band with rubies and diamonds in. Love them both and they stand out from everyone's boring rings.

NomDeOrdinateur · 14/06/2013 20:12

Mine's like this. I adore it and the stones are wearing perfectly well - I just hope that the claws holding the diamonds will last the test of time!
