Engagement rings - coloured stones

therumoursaretrue · 14/06/2013 16:09

Anyone have a coloured stone in their engagement ring? DP has been floating the idea of rings about a bit...looking for hints it seems!

I have seen a stunning tanzanite and diamond ring but worry I'll wish I'd gone more conventional. Also worry about it fitting in with my lifestyle as jeweler warned us coloured stones are more liable to get damaged. If you went for a non diamond were you happy with it?

I know that I will be delighted regardless and the meaning behind it is obviously the most important thing! However would be interested in hearing from anyone with a coloured stone?

soontobe - I have another gorgoeus ring from my grandmother - a torquoise stone surrounded by seed pearls, in the shape of a flower. I sometimes wear it as an engagement ring.

hellocatty · 15/06/2013 15:21

I wanted a sapphire but was talked int oa diamond (which was lovely not moaning) BUT still always wanted a sapphire and finally got one for my 10th wedding anniversary!!! Just get what you like!!

ManAliveThisThingsFantastic · 15/06/2013 16:48

I wanted a diamond and got the Tiffany Setting engagement ring and though its "only" a diamond I adore it! I'm not one for coloured stones though!

carabos · 15/06/2013 20:36

I have a very large amethyst set in 18ct white gold with simple blunt claws. It's contemporary and gets a lot of comments.

BestIsWest · 15/06/2013 22:07

I had a blue topaz with 3 tiny diamonds each side (sounds like Startail's). I loved it but after 28 years of continuous wear I've spent more money having it repaired than it cost originally and now it's too fragile to wear. DH has promised me a new one and I must admit now I have the choice again I am still drawn to a coloured stone. I love Tanzanite but everyone says it fades and I want something I can wear every day. so will probaably go for a saphhire. It will be yellow gold though.

CitizenOscar · 15/06/2013 22:22

I've got a mid-blue sapphire. Slightly yearned after a much deeper blue sapphire as I think they're gorgeous but couldn't be bothered to keep looking (I hate shopping!) and as I wanted an ethically sourced ring I had a bit less choice. DH and I chose it together and we both like it. I've never regretted doing something a little bit different and might even be bolder if I were choosing again now.

Do think about what you'll do when you're wearing a wedding ring as well. We got a ring that fits next to my engagement ring but some unusual settings might cause problems so worth thinking about in advance, assuming you want to continue wearing your engagement ring too.

My Engagement ring is a Diamond solitaire, but my eternity ring is a 7 carat dark blue Sapphire an Emerald cut shape with 3 baguette diamonds either side set in platinum. It's very bling. I adore it!

therumoursaretrue · 16/06/2013 20:09

kelda that ring sounds beautiful.

We have I think chosen the ring! I am giddy with excitement Smile

That is a good tip oscar and something we have been trying to take into account, the ring we like is quite a large cluster and is not engagement cut to fit a band, but the jeweller let me try it with a flat band which worked well.

What have you chosen?

therumoursaretrue · 17/06/2013 09:32

It's a cluster with an oval cut sapphire in the centre and 12 diamonds surrounding it. The band is yellow gold. It is really beautiful and DP likes it a lot, so that's good as I really wanted something he loved too.

Sounds very pretty. If I were choosing again, I would probably look at sapphire.

MERLYPUSS · 17/06/2013 10:36

Plain (textured white and rose gold band) with two square sapphires and a diamond.

maybemyrtle · 17/06/2013 10:46

Mine is opal and is commented on often. I love it - but then I would, wouldn't I :)

Gingersnap88 · 17/06/2013 10:47

Mine is an Art Deco dark blue sapphire and diamond ring, it's really beautiful and reflects my personality (love vintage and history). Get lots of compliments on it, go for it :)

I also would have liked green one..! My mum has garnets and they are lovely too.

SixPackWellies · 17/06/2013 10:51

That is a beautiful ring, bananamonkey. I love love art deco.

I have an emerald, which I love. The jeweller said that emeralds are quite soft, and not really suitable to be worn every day, so I am careful to take it off when showering etc.

Badvoc · 17/06/2013 10:54

Tanzanite is beautiful

InLoveWithDavidTennant · 17/06/2013 11:50

mines a small pink sapphire rectangle with small diamonds down each side

wouldnt have gone for a non-coloured one tbh

NonnaMai · 17/06/2013 12:56

Mime is a 1 carot oval Tanzanite with a diamond set either side. It is stunning and people often comment on it.

I never wear it to do housework though.

CitizenOscar · 17/06/2013 19:05

I got the jeweller to cut a little bit out of my (flat) wedding band so it sits right next to the engagement ring. Don't know if that'd work for you?

myron · 17/06/2013 20:18

DH & I visited the Jewellery Quarter and ended up having a crash course in gemstones from a jeweller with a workshop. I thought I wanted a diamond solitare but once I tried some on, I veered towards a ruby or a sapphire. The sapphire looked best with my skintone so sapphire it was. We literally went into the back office and the jeweller emptied a bag of gemstones onto the desk in front of us for us to select the stones. Then, the exciting bit, he helped us to design the setting. I wanted a practical setting so ended up with a rubbed over 3/4 cut opening Victorian twist with a central one carat Ceylon sapphire flanked by a smaller diamond on either side on a 18ct yellow gold band. We were so impressed with the service and the whole process of the bespoke design that we went back to the same place for our wedding bands 2 yrs later.

JonesTheSteam · 17/06/2013 22:10

DH chose mine - gold with oval-shaped aquamarine with three little diamonds in a triangle shape on each side. I love it. Would never even have contemplated not having a coloured stone of some description.

Kind of apt too, as we ended up getting married in March and aquamarine is March birthstone...

therumoursaretrue · 17/06/2013 22:15

Jones aquamarine is gorgeous! I spied a stunning aquamarine necklace and earring set in the jewellers we were in - its a really stunning stone.

Big square cut emerald flanked by two rectangular diamonds in a big chunky white gold setting. Love it!

wiltingfast · 18/06/2013 08:24

I have blue diamonds in my wedding ring. Fell in love with it and that was that. Engagement ring is a solitaire diamond but whole set looks well together.

I think buuy what you like :)
