Calling all HOC winters.....

QueenCadbury · 21/04/2013 09:21

So, I had my colours done yesterday and I am now a sprinter winter. My best colours being royal blue, electric blue, damson, lagoon blue and light emerald.

Of course a shopping trip is now required Grin so I'm just after any inspiration by what you fellow winters have recently bought...

yes I had a style day - i opted for it over having colours although she did tell me I'm a winter. Style wise I'm a dramatic gamine.

bertandmarble how does being a romantic natural mean dramatic fun? wouldn't it mean natural fun unless you are a dramatic natural? or am I getting confused!!

bertandmarble · 16/10/2013 21:29

Hi Nigella, Dramatic gamine sounds lovely!

I opted to be a dramatic/romantic but there is no such combination, they call it romantic natural instead, Im not sure why. Im definitely dramatic and not natural...

ElizabethBathory · 16/10/2013 21:48

Why is there no dramatic/romantic option? It sounds amazing! Like a sophisticated Goth!

I didn't have a style day but decided for myself that I'm a gamine ingenue... But maybe that doesn't exist either?

bertandmarble · 16/10/2013 22:02

I knew straight away thats what I was but apparently they are at opposite ends of the spectrum so they call it something different. Romantic is a bit sexy like Liz Taylor type thing... Sophisticated Goth sounds perfect, that can be me! I'm not sure about Gamine Ingenue. Sounds do able. Ingenue is the leading lady, princess type thing i think

ElizabethBathory · 16/10/2013 22:09

Ah I see. I'm not leading ladyish...more childish (in fashion tastes) - I think of ingenue as being a bit girly, like Zooey Deschanel in New Girl. Could be wrong though, I've only glanced at my friend's style day stuff.

bertandmarble · 16/10/2013 22:48

Hmm, maybe an expert will come along and clarify it for us..

MissScatterbrain · 17/10/2013 08:05

I have not been to a style day but having read some stuff online, I think I am probably a dramatic/classic/natural. I found putting together a pinterest board with favourite outfits/looks an useful exercise in finding out what I like - I found that I am drawn to the French/Parisan look and I have the body shape/colouring to look good in some of these outfits.

I have a friend who is a ingenue - her build is fairly delicate, she wears girly but very trendy stuff which are quite detailed. She looks amazing but I would look a fright in her clothes. Another friend is a gamine - she is quite boyish in body shape, wears cigarette trousers, short jackets and definitely no flouncy/flowing clothes.

MissScatterbrain · 17/10/2013 08:08

useful link re styles

KosherBacon · 17/10/2013 10:07

I am going to do the style day in the new year. I can't justify it at the moment but really want to do it.

NigellasGuest · 17/10/2013 14:48

my book says that the styles go Dramatic, Classic, Natural, Gamine, Ingenue, Romantic - in that order, from yang to yin.

I was almost diagnosed as a natural gamine but she changed her mind from natural to dramatic. I don't think I'm that dramatic, just a bit at times! She got the dramatic bit from my slight "quirkiness" eg a skeleton hanging off my otherwise normal looking bag and stud detailing on my otherwise normal-ish boots - that's all - nothing full on cruella de ville here! I must say i am delighted to be a gamine and feel vindicated in a lot of my style choices so having a style day has been fantastic. I was scared she was going to recommend a load of tasteful scarves but no such think, thank goodness. In fact she told me to avoid scarves full stop, which was fantastic because I've never got on with them. I just always felt I "should" do scarves because it's what you do.

Sorry if this is a highjack, I know this is a thread about Winter. FWIW i am actually a winter.....

NigellasGuest · 17/10/2013 14:49

no such thing not think!

MissScatterbrain · 17/10/2013 14:55

Do dramatics wear scarves? I have a big thing about wearing these.

NigellasGuest · 17/10/2013 15:02

I am no expert so I can't say yes or no, missScatterbrain BUT the non-scarf bit was to do with me being a gamine rather than a dramatic.

that's not to say that gamines can't wear scarves - she was going to go down what sort of scarves would be good for me so it is definitely ok - it's just that she said not to bother with them for me because I didn't want to go there, and forgetting scarves was in keeping with my style personality. I'm sure that's clear as mud.....

NigellasGuest · 17/10/2013 15:04

by forgetting scarves i mean not buying them any more, I don't mean leaving them all around the place! I'm sorry I am being less than coherent - Thanks to all

ElizabethBathory · 17/10/2013 15:13

Not a hijack Nigella, all the style talk is v interesting! I have trouble with scarves too, they just never look right. I wear them in winter when I need to be warm, obv, but I just can't do decorative scarves. I can just about do snoods if they're not too big. I think I'm a gamine with a tiny bit of ingenue - nothing flowing, frilly or flouncy but I do like the odd cute/silly print and short skater dress, which both seem ingenue-ish to me. But I look best with bobbed hair, simple, clean lines, crewnecks, no jewellery, and above knee length skirts/dresses, and either cropped or wide leg trousers. And flat rather than high heeled shoes. On the other hand, I doubt anyone I know would call me boyish. Hmm.

MissScatterbrain · 17/10/2013 15:26

By boyish, think short hair, clean lines, trousers, no frills, jewellery, scarves etc.

I think by wearing the right clothes for our style, we look more feminine - I would look like a man in drag if I wore frills and flounces Grin

ElizabethBathory · 17/10/2013 15:36

I think that's right MissScatterbrain. I feel more feminine with short hair because my face becomes more noticeable and my eyes look bigger. And I feel like a man in drag in frills, especially frilly tops or puffy sleeves, because my top half is broader than my bottom half.

easypeeler · 19/10/2013 23:18

Uh-oh, make way for a gal who thought she was an autumn but is actually a sultry winter!

My copper-toned hair (and penchant for gold jewellery) led me to believe I was an autumn but Im actually much lovelier as a winter

What to do with my gold jewellery ? Confused

easypeeler · 19/10/2013 23:20

Meant to add that my copper tones are dyed. i'll be a mid-brown ash as soon as I see my hairdresser!

QueenCadbury · 20/10/2013 07:46

Welcome easy. Could you sell your jewellery? Or you could wear gold rings/bracelets as they're not near your face?

Loving all the style chat. I'd love to do the style day and hopefully will sometime next year. I'm guessing I'm some kind of natural.

OP posts:
KosherBacon · 20/10/2013 08:29

Has anybody seen any good jewellery for winters? I'm thinking some nice earrings with some great winter colours would be great.

easypeeler · 22/10/2013 18:13

Oh please help me out! I'm a sultry winter with dark hair, very dark brown eyes and fairly pale skin. I've always coloured my hair and as a result I always thought I was an autumn so make-up wise I lived in browns and golds.

My winter make-up is meant to be pinks and greys, I love the lipsticks from HoC but as they are SUCH a departure for me I'm struggling o understand the make-up in relation to hair.

I get that if I wear grey/pink I wear the same eyeshadow and a pink lippie and when I wear red I wear the red lippie but what eyeshadow? What do I do lip-wise when I'm in navy or black?

I feel really thick but mostly I fee out of my depth. My age doesn't help I don't want to start doing heavy eye make-up at 50 ;0

Make up lesson 101 please ladies Thanks

easypeeler · 22/10/2013 18:14

I forgot to ask about what make-up with the deep greens and damson too Blush

mrskittyfantistico · 22/10/2013 19:29

Hello all, I'm another sultry winter lurker! I'm with you easy peeler- I'd convinced myself I was an autumn (or spring, but warm, definitely warm) so finding it hard to adjust to the 'full on-ness' of winter. It doesn't help that I work from home so feel a right prat sat at my desk with full makeup on...! I need makeup tips too but, being poverty stricken (close enough anyway), I need 'budget' makeup. I'm thinking MUA or similar so I can have a bit of an experiment on the cheap.
This thread has been great, I have skimmed through once but intend a copying and pasting session soon cos that's how I roll. Really sadly and geekishly.

bertandmarble · 22/10/2013 20:57

Hi easy peeler. I usually wear bright red with Navy and red or pink with black.

I think a dark lipstick would look good with deep green and damson, like Chanel Rouge Noir ( every brand does a version)
