Currently in ITC with my mum - stoke, heart attack, allergic reaction, they don't know. Got call at 8.00 from brother and threw myself on first train. She is ventilated and currently sedated. I feel like I have been hit by a train...

beachyhead · 15/05/2013 15:36

Oh BD.... Hmm

Lots of wishes and hugs for a speedy diagnosis and recovery

Stropperella · 15/05/2013 15:47

Oh no BD. What a horrible shock. Big hugs from here and I hope you find out something concrete soon.

motherinferior · 15/05/2013 15:54

BD. I'm so sorry.

hattymattie · 15/05/2013 16:09

Gosh BD - hope she's OK.

bigTillyMint · 15/05/2013 16:24

Oh shit BD {{{}}}

When my mum had a stroke I felt just the same. Luckily hers was minor - hope whatever has happened is equally as minor.

QueenQueenie · 15/05/2013 16:43

Oh BD. What a horrible shock. Your poor Mum.
Hope you get some better idea of what's going on soon.
Thinking of you.

wilbur · 15/05/2013 17:16

Oh lord, BD, I'm so sorry, what a horrible shock. Take care, try and stay calm, write everything the doctors say down, if you can. When you're upset you often don't remember details for long.

CointreauVersial · 15/05/2013 17:28

Oh, BD.....sending you and your mum positive thoughts.....hope she's OK. Thanks

Cremolafoam · 15/05/2013 18:05

Oh Black duck , how awful you poor thing. What a shock. I really hope your mum is ok.Hmm

Okay so after lots of conflicting views, comments etc, it would appear she had a stroke (rear of head so not the standard droopy mouth number - this effects speech and balance), but CT does not show major bleed/lesion (so we assume this is good?), they gave her the standard drug (she was, luckily, in the four hour window) and apparently the change was almost instant. Speech back etc. By the time I got there she was tired and on obs.
Everyone else went home to change and I stayed. I called doctor because the blood pressure cuff was too tight - they sorted this, but then nurse wasn't happy and she was struggling to breathe (I thought she wanted to be sick). Also her speech had deteriorated again. Nurse got dr and they chucked me out.

At this point it looks like what I was witnessing was a heart attack. She has fluid on her lungs (she appears also to have a lung infection which may have added to the heart attack). They incubated her because even with 100% pumped through a mask her oxygen in her blood was dropping.

However despite the heart attack there is very little evidence of it on the ECG so again, a positive? They shipped her up to ITC and put her in a medical coma.

However, tonight the nurse asked her to raise her arms and she did so, and her legs and bend her knees and she did (couldn't move her legs this morning)

She even joked with me this morning that she doesn't do things by halves!
So really not a lot we can do now until tomorrow.
Thanks for the good wishes Crepeys... (watery smile)

Cremolafoam · 15/05/2013 19:08

Oh bd there's definitely positives in there. Gosh what a day. That's excellent that she can move legs and respond vocally.
You must be a wreck after witnessing the heart attack. Can you get any rest tonight? Is anyone coming this evening ?
Bd do take care. We are all thinking if you

bigTillyMint · 15/05/2013 19:40

The stroke sounds exactly like the one my mum had.

As Cremo says, witnessing the heart attack must have been really horrid. And agree - you need to get some rest - is there anyone else there to take over?

Sending more hugs {{{}}} and best wishes.

motherinferior · 15/05/2013 20:02

Oh darling. Yes please knock off for a bit if you can - have something to eat and a glass of wine.

QueenQueenie · 15/05/2013 20:05

BD have sent you a pm

hattymattie · 15/05/2013 20:54

Fingers crossed for your Mum BD. Try to get some rest if you can.

Best wishes xx

Blackduck · 15/05/2013 20:57

Hi all, not much we can do tonight so have come home. She is annoyed by the tube which is apparently a good thing and was very pleased to see my nephew and niece (ds won't be allowed in as too young)
QQ thank you so much for PM - I can't work out how to reply on my iPhone but just to say she is not in that Hospital (they live near Harrow so is out that way), but I am so grateful for the offer.
My sil is a trooper, she asks all the right questions and takes NO nonsense - we set her on the medical staff.
Thanks again everyone

CointreauVersial · 15/05/2013 21:34

Hope your mum has a good night, BD ( and you....).

In other sick parent news, DSM is now home, confined to bed and dosed up on morphine, but slowly on the mend.....

Gah! It's that time of life, crepeys.....I predict the next 25 years (for me, at least) will be punctuated by such parental health crises. We just have to deal with whatever comes our way, and soldier on. The sandwich generation, don't they call us?

Cremolafoam · 15/05/2013 21:43

They do CV, they do. I feel like the poster girl for The Sandwich Generation.
Or more likely this wiki definition:

crepey(Adjective)
Saggy and crinkly, like crepe paper.

Oh BD Hmm I hope you can get some proper sleep tonight and that dm continues to improve.

Have spent the evening working out the shortfall in dds student finance plan. And looking grimly at last years P60. Where the heck am I going to conjure up the deficit of £ 5000 a year ?

Keep calm and carry on ( gulps)

MrsSchadenfreude · 15/05/2013 21:47

Blackduck - how awful for you all. Have a glass of wine and an early night if you can.

herbaceous · 15/05/2013 22:15

Even at our great age it still shakes is to the core when our parents scare us like this, doesn't it. Keep on keeping on BD.

alto1 · 15/05/2013 22:37

Blackduck very sorry to hear this. Sounds complicated, but glad it's not a cerebral haemorrhage at least. Hard on you, look after yourself (easier said than done)

Blackduck · 16/05/2013 05:40

Morning all. They are apparently still arguing over whether it was a stroke or a heart attack, has symptoms of both, but test inconclusive. Having more tests today and possible angiogram (not sure they can attach much more to her).
CV know exactly what you mean, when Mrs T died my first thought was along the lines of 'its getting closer'.
I guess part of the shock is if I'd have picked anyone for this it would have been my dad or dp's mum, not my mum.
Anyway thanks again all, hope various domestic appliance and other crisis are being sorted.
Alto hope dh is feeling better.
MrsS hope AB is behaving himself.
