Been lusting after a bayswater for ages. But something holding me back, which other bags are classics which wont date....

Labradrlover... My bags are not the bling shit a mugger would recognise. Ie: monogrammed lv etc. they prob wouldn't know a bottega if it bit them on their horse kebab. Plus I am a karate black belt- seriously (was aged 17, now just a bit kamikaze and cross)

Allthingspretty · 22/02/2013 21:55

Chic and seek for pre loved bags and then you can get more than one bag!

Oh god I want it all! Handbags, shoes, holidays (not in a caravan though sweeties), iPad, pids, pods - the lot! I make no apologies and am enjoying looking at all these links.

What I don't want though is a bench ta very much.

BrandyAlexander · 22/02/2013 21:55

Oh I love that one too LizzyLouSmile My friend has it and thinking of getting it myself.

Allthingspretty · 22/02/2013 22:03

I think it was lauren laverne in an interview who said follow your bliss.

Some people find bliss in having am expensive handbag..some dont.

Nobody is right nobody is wrong so follow your bliss whatvet it may be...

And op lool on the purse forum and theres a ther in he mulberry sevtion is an outlet tjread umder the shopping heading. Tells you some of the stock amd prices. Some serious reductions on some bags it seems

Lizzylou · 22/02/2013 22:06

Making plans to touch it in real life Novice and then will invest I think.
No idea why I like it so much. Currently have a lilylolo black one which is OK.
The MK one just looks right for me.

propertyNIGHTmareBEFOREXMAS · 22/02/2013 22:18

£800 on an investment handbag is entirely reasonable and I would urge you to go forth and spoil yourself Smile. I love bags. As this is your first bag, I would suggest you get a classic style that will not date (and can be resold easily with limited OSS if you don't get on with it). I'd be inclined to go oak, black or chocolate colour Mulberry NVT leather bayswater or buffalo leather oversize alexa. Have a fabulous time choosing whatever brand/style suits you.

propertyNIGHTmareBEFOREXMAS · 22/02/2013 22:19

Limited loss not OSS!

singaporefling · 22/02/2013 22:39

Coraltoes...i agree, you wouldn't get a whole lot of a bottega for £800 these days...but they're so subtle, discreet, age beautifully... Most people wouldn't recognise them which suits me just fine...

coraltoes 'horse kebab' made me laugh big time. Haven't read this thread op, but I have a collection of 5 unique fendi bags that no one would necessarily 'know' (and mug me for) and I love them to death! True classics that I've never stopped using., I'm not down with current trends but if personally go for Chanel if I did have it spare at the mo.. Enjoy shopping!!!!

HokeyCokeyPigInAPokey · 22/02/2013 23:05

I have had several Louis Vuittons and a Prada bag that cost a fortune but I have never had a Mulberry.

I think I will have a Effie or Daria for my birthday.

Enjoy what ever you decide on OP.

EllaFitzgerald · 23/02/2013 01:16

Another Mulberry fan here, have three of them, my all time favourite is the Luella by Luella Bartley for Mulberry. I still regret not buying the Roxanne when I was in a position to, so if you've been lusting after a Bayswater, I'd go for that.

Although if you're in the market for a clutch, I'd go for Philip Treacy.

utopian99 · 23/02/2013 03:56

Second vote for chic and seek to get something glorious if you can - I'd be be prepared to hold out to find a hermes or smythson if i was looking for something branded.

BUT if it was my £800 I'd go straight to www.manchesterfashion.com/c/19/657/brand-in-focus-a-few-fine-things these people - my last three bags have been made by them and they're stunning looking, I get people crossing the street to ask about them. You can choose your leathers etc or buy ready made, and they're not ubiquitous like mulberry. (yes, flame me for exclusivity snobbery!)

BrandyAlexander · 23/02/2013 06:48

I was shying away from saying that the bayswater was ubiquitous but on the train to work, it does feel like every other woman has one either in the oak or black. That's probably why it's considered a classic but I think of it as a dull but safe purchase for a first big purchase.

littlewhitebag · 23/02/2013 07:25

I have three Mulberry's. My favourite one is a plain black messenger bag which i use every single day. It's perhaps not quite what you were looking for though.

My DD has a beautiful quilted Chanel bag but it cost over £1000! She bought it when she turned 16 using all the money people gave her for her birthday plus a loan from her dad which she has diligently paid off (she is 20 now). She rarely uses it but Chanel is her style icon and she views it like a piece or art.

Southeastdweller · 23/02/2013 07:28

I see them on my commute too often but 9/10 they're fakes.

MrsCampbellBlack · 23/02/2013 08:14

Is this S&B or The Moral Maze - I often get confused nowadays.

I wouldn't do mulberry as personally think the brand isn't what it was. I like Anya bags but would tend to buy from Bicester.

I'd love a Marcie but for longevity would go for Bottega Veneta - yes £££ but no little children in sweatshops were involved in making it - something the £5 from primark people seem to have no moral issues with Wink

I also assume that if you can afford a designer bag then you may also be able to afford weekends away etc but I don't really care what other people spend their money on.

OneHundredSecondsofSolitude · 23/02/2013 08:23

I flog one of the kids, add the proceeds to my £800 and buy a ps1

buttercrumble · 23/02/2013 08:23

Oooh thanks for some great ideas, im going to have to decide between quite a few suggestions on here now.......

Lol at "is this S&B or the Moral Maze?" Grin

AmberNectarine · 23/02/2013 09:32

Bayswaters are lovely, but agree ten a penny. I see dozens on my commute every day. I'm guilty mind, but mine is Navy and sparkly, so a bit more jazzy.

Buy something you love and it will never steer you wrong. I recently bought an Alexander Wang Rocco after coveting it for years and I feel so happy every time I use it.

Sugarice · 23/02/2013 09:38

There's a stunning black and white bag I've seen Gywneth Paltrow wearing recently, it is just gorgeous, I don't know who designed it but fab!!.

I would love a Balenciaga if I could get my grotty mitts on one.

Enjoy your bag OP, whichever one you buy!

racmun · 23/02/2013 09:42

I love Mulberry bags.

Go for an Alexa it's perfect if you have a pram to push because of the long strap I use mine nearly everyday.

I've got a Bayswater which I hardly use as it is a but awkward/formal with kids- depends what you want it for really.

Or go for an Antony messenger and an evening clutch which will work out about £800 for both
