Been lusting after a bayswater for ages. But something holding me back, which other bags are classics which wont date....

OP posts:
OliviaMumsnet · 22/02/2013 21:21

AHEM

scottishmummy · 22/02/2013 21:23

A great bag looks great,accessorises any outfit,lifts mood,smells great,gets admiring glances
But hey could carry a free one from suoermarket, and congratulate self on thrift
But seeing I ca afford it,I'll go for gorgeous bag and to hell with could buy a car for that

justasecond · 22/02/2013 21:23

I think £800 on a bag is good value for money compared to a holiday that only lasts a few days! A quality bag will last forever and you will get money back if you sell it. Enjoy OP, ignore the haters!
BTW love Chloe paraty (out of budget) and marcie in any style

Internationaltraveller · 22/02/2013 21:24

A bag could possible get you a flight upgrade Grin

scottishmummy · 22/02/2013 21:24

Are you clearing your throat Olivia or has this somehow got yer goat?

Lizzylou · 22/02/2013 21:25

Reality, I do get you. I don't think I can imagine spending £800 on a bag.
I'd far rather a holiday.
BUT if you can afford to do both then what is the harm?

And I LOVE that Michael Kors tote, it is only £285. And I would use it every day.

I suppose it is all about priorities. I worked with someone who was head to toe designer, Jimmy Choos, botoxed to fuck, would rather die than shop high street. Flashy car. But she lived with her Dad. At the age of 30. That is strange.

chickensandbees · 22/02/2013 21:27

Although i have found one problem with getting a bag you love...one may not be enough!!!

Lizzylou · 22/02/2013 21:27

INternational, doesn't matter if it is heavy, just another way to tone the bingo wings!

I need this bag. I really do.

Labradorlover · 22/02/2013 21:30

Due to spending my teenage years in a dodgy bit of North London and seeing too many pals have their bags snatched, I've only recently got my head round the idea of even carrying a bag as opposed to using pockets.......
Those with expensive bags, are you not worried about being mugged, just for your bag, let alone the contents?

In defense of the bench sitters, the OP said something was holding her back....

DontmindifIdo · 22/02/2013 21:31

For a lot of people it's not 'either or' for holidays etc. '£800 treat' sounds a lot, but then '£15 a week treat' doesn't sound a lot does it - but over a year it would be the same.

singaporefling · 22/02/2013 21:32

Anything Bottega Veneta....subtle luxury, intricately exsquisitely plaited, softest leather, classier, far more rare and seldom copied....

Nope never worry about being mugged for the bag. They're far more likely to want the iPhone etc.

OliviaMumsnet · 22/02/2013 21:40

Peace, Fierce and LOVE stylistas
Be nice to one another.

Internationaltraveller · 22/02/2013 21:40

lizzylou I felt the same way so I banned myself from going I to the shop. now I want a marc Jacobs Natasha - think I am after the smallest bag imaginable after carrying around baby bag and so much stuff for so long!

Tigerstripes · 22/02/2013 21:40

Yes to Aspinal. If I had the money, I would buy the Marylebone (£740). So pretty and not as commonly seen as other brands.

Internationaltraveller · 22/02/2013 21:42

I used to be on a police crime alert email for our neighbourhood. Someone got mugged for their cheap cocktail ring from accessorize - muggers thought it was genuine. You can't win either way!

PollyFrances · 22/02/2013 21:43

The original poster never mentioned that she was going without a holiday or a computer to buy this bag...

coffeeinbed · 22/02/2013 21:44

Blimey.
We managed the proverbial handbags at dawn.

Lizzylou · 22/02/2013 21:45

Well they are, my priorities are always holidays/days out/the children. Or good food.

Not bothered about cars, not bothered about having latest ipad or whatever.

When I turned 30 I had my bonus cheque in hand and went shopping for an expensive bag in Harvey Nicks and Selfridges. I couldn't find anything I liked enough to part with the cash. Next month I was pregnant with DS1 and spending on cots/buggies etc.
I am now edging to 40 (weeks now!) and have found my bag. Only on this thread, will have to look at it in the flesh first.

There has always been people on MN with huge budgets, and those without. Unfortunately that is life.

BrandyAlexander · 22/02/2013 21:48

Oooh which bag LizzyLou?

Drywhiteplease · 22/02/2013 21:48

too
angry at horrible comments. People spend their money on different things in life.......op was just asking about bags not about ethics!

OP my fashion advice is always to follow your heart, if you really fall in love with an item just get it because if you compromise or get talked out of it you'll always regret it. My fav bits are things I felt a bit guilty buying. Get the Bayswater...................not a bench Grin

Drywhiteplease · 22/02/2013 21:49

Apologies for weird links

coraltoes · 22/02/2013 21:50

As someone who recently bought a large bottega venetta bag I'd say try them. £800 will get you something small though, does size matter? They are so ŵonderfully made, and subtle. My mulberry bags have aged nicely...ysl too. Less pleased with my ferragamo clutch, so beware those!

Lizzylou · 22/02/2013 21:52

Novice it this One

I have no idea why. I just really want it!
