Uggs - are they really that bad?

After a class war broke out on another completely unrelated thread, it came up that UGGs are considered a serious no-no on MN. I must confess to owning two pairs (one black and one brown) and as a WFHM I wear them all winter provided it is dry. They are the comfiest, warmest shoes I've ever had. They are like slippers but for outside! I don't wear them on the outside of my trousers, this is a look I don't like, but inside a boot leg I consider them harmless.

Am I deluding myself and walking around in the winter version of crocs?

I've always shunned them on the grounds that they make your feet look swollen and like you have severe cankles, but I can see that you all think they're super comfy so may give them a go. Although I tried on a pair of my friends not so long ago (don't know which type and never knew there was such a huge range) and we went for a walk, but my foot was sliding around inside the boot? It doesn't mould to the contours of your foot at all as the base is just, well, foam stuff so they didn't seem much good for walking at a relatively brisk pace.
Even though, i'm still tempted, and have never been afraid of looking like a chavvy twat!

KS those aren't ugg boots. I mean, they might be made by a company called ugg, but when I think of uggs I think of the normal sheepskin ones. So it's just a definitional thing I guess, depends on your pov. And the sheepskin ones do get easily soggy when wet (which makes them smelly), so not really practical outdoor wear I would have thought...

Anyway, I don't really mind if people wear the sheepskin ones outside the house, I just think it's a bit odd.

I have taken a lot A LOT of flack for my uggs and I dont give a s**t! my husband hates them, my friends hate them, but they are comfy and I'm 8 months pregnant and thats all that matters! I think they are the warmest, comfiest shoes ever, well worth the money!

squoosh · 24/11/2012 15:13

I love the committment the UGGers show towards their much loved footwear. If they had a motto it would be 'I'll give up my Uggs when you pry them from my cold dead feet motherfucker'!

skinny jeans,sunnies,permatans,school gate wags
Uttaranchal are aesthetically ugly, and functionally bad for you so yes it's a sheepy fashion thing.baaaaaa

RVPisnomore · 24/11/2012 15:41

Love my Uggs and will where them under my jeans for winter.

However don't get me started on the mumsnet obsession with leggings, they are the work of the devil!

MandaHugNKiss · 24/11/2012 16:25

Most, if not all of the Ugg-sayers are saying they like/love them because of how warm and comfortable they are. Fashion be damned. And yet... by many Ugg-nayers we're tarred with the WAG brush. I mean, seriously? Aren't all the WAG types over at NetHuns? whoops, more stereotyoing from me

Yes, I wear skinny jeans. Yes, I have expensive sunglasses. No to the tan/fake tan, I'm as pale as my fathers Edinburgh genes made me. And although I'm a SAHM, I am far, far more than 'just someone's partner'.

Why the frick I'm judged like that for simply wearing Uggs, I cannot fathom.

Snobbery of nosebleed heights.

Yet, conversely, the other main counter argument of: they're ugly, no fashionista would wear them... it's not necessarily fashion, but if it is for certain wearers perhaps your arguments would hold more water if you could name a fashionista who hasn't been six foot under for more than four score and twenty years. All women need to be wearing a pencil skirt and high heels to be glam/fashionable? (all the women named are of that 'ilk'). Perhaps their perceived glamour was more to do with how they felt/projected? Because 'being attractive' is far bloody more than what is on my feet.

Like Uggs or don't like Uggs talk about getting in a flap over first world issues. Perhaps lay off hoiking up the judgey pants on such ridiculous grounds.

if you're going to get allHmmhumphy at least get it right what youre Hmmabout
disliking uggs is not snobby at all.it is based on the aesthetics of uggs minging
purely anecdotally ugg fans ive met are wag types as described.I'm in no way saying it's representative or accurate for all,it's my opinion.

Another Uggs fan here!

I bought the black suede Lo Pro boots last year - they are gorgeous, but sadly don't work on me because of my damn calves, which battle to break out from them!

They sadly sit unloved and unworn in the cupboard!

Anyone interested? Wink

"yes agree utter are indicative if a certain kind of mammy

This is not an opinion. Sure, it contains four words worth of opinion about Uggs and they in and of themselves are fine... I actually agree they're not the most beautiful things on this planet and I hear they can cause foot problems although I have never suffered any myself.

What the majority of the post is, is in fact a character assassination of anyone choosing to wear them. That's NOT the same as an opinion on Uggs. That's judging the person wearing the Uggs.

(I am grumpy today)

scottishmummy · 24/11/2012 17:08

no character assination is a directed attack upon individual and their character
I associate uggs with wag types, I am making petty Ill informed statement that I stand by
and we all make judgements about clothes, grooming, brands.although it's denied on mn

you're all over shop,disliking uggs isn't a character assination.foolish to say so
a character assignation is sustained attack on identifiable aspect of character
I'm simply saying uggs are minging and anecdotally there's a type of woman wears them

if you're going to get picky, get it right
I did say anecdotally,I did say indicative of. in two different posts
what's your point?what loose association are you trying to construct as big ta da moment

MandaHugNKiss · 24/11/2012 17:26

Ok, so perhaps I over egged the pudding somewhat by calling it a character assassination... but I didn't say you disliking Uggs was a character assassination; I said your opinions of the 'type' who wears them was. I actually said I agreed with your actual reasons (ugly and apparently unsupportive).

Yes, we all 'judge'. But as an inner monologue, mostly, I would hope. Where we censor ourselves, call into practice our education, experience and think about societial norms. Where we hope not to induce that other old MN favourite: did you mean to be so rude?

One can present an opinion in many different ways.

you certainly understand when it suits you to,overcoming the difficulty posed
your comprehension of my posts seems somewhat selective
and point if s&b threads is to opine, judge, sound off about clothes, attire, accessories
