Uggs - are they really that bad?

After a class war broke out on another completely unrelated thread, it came up that UGGs are considered a serious no-no on MN. I must confess to owning two pairs (one black and one brown) and as a WFHM I wear them all winter provided it is dry. They are the comfiest, warmest shoes I've ever had. They are like slippers but for outside! I don't wear them on the outside of my trousers, this is a look I don't like, but inside a boot leg I consider them harmless.

Am I deluding myself and walking around in the winter version of crocs?

zarathank God for your voice of reason! They're vile. Clearly very comfortable, but then so is a fleece onesie. What happened to having a sense of occasion?

ArielThePiraticalMermaid · 23/11/2012 19:24

Onesies. What in God's name are they about? Far more offensive than Uggs. I saw some kids wearing them the other day in town (remote and provincial) and DH and I were openly laughing. Rude? Possibly. But they were asking for it!

Bouncey · 23/11/2012 19:40

I have uggs and don't think they look too bad with skinny jeans, but they aren't terribly practical. The grip is rubbish during icy weather and they aren't especially waterproof. Wouldn't buy them again.

Londonista1975 · 23/11/2012 23:05

Snobs can get fucked - Uggs are a great invention and mine were worth every penny.

Zara1984 · 23/11/2012 23:17

Uggs are the snuggies of feet. Comfy yes, but for wearing inside the privacy of your own home.

They are slippers. I don't know how else to say it. It is like wearing PJs or underpants as real clothing. I promise you, walk down the street in Sydney or Auckland wearing Uggs and wait for the pointing and sniggering.

OwedToAutumn · 24/11/2012 07:06

My mother, in Australia, used to wear Uggs to hang out the washing on cold winter mornings, when she was my age (44).

I have never understood why they suddenly became glamourous.

DD2 has a pair, and that's fine, because her fashion taste (as an 11yo) is different to mine. But I bet she wouldn't like them so much if I started wearing them. Wink

bishboschone · 24/11/2012 07:17

Well said londonista!!

dexter73 · 24/11/2012 07:33

Why does it matter what people in Australia/New Zealand do with them? I don't live in Australia!

uggmum · 24/11/2012 07:56

I currently have 3 pairs, including a scruffy pair for the school run. I wear them sept-June and June-sept I wear fitflops and Birkenstocks. This year I bought some haviana flip flops and they are really comfy too.

topsi · 24/11/2012 08:22

I have a pair of 'zippy boots' that I got on a Group-on on a whim. When I got them I tried them on and thought oh they look dreadful and put them back in the box. DH came home, spotted the box and wanted to see them on. I put them on again and walked around in them and they were sooooo comfy. I thought oh well I will just wear them in the house. Now I am guilty of wearing them all the time. Honestly they go on in the morning before my feet touch the floor and don't come off till bed time. They are not UGGS but have a reinforced heel so they don't bend in and seem good quality. They only cost me £69 as well. I may stretch to a pair of UGGS next time.

QuickLookBusy · 24/11/2012 08:27

Erm, well my Kensington uggs are solid boots with a very solid sole. Of course they aren't meant to be worn inside!

rowingboat · 24/11/2012 09:17

They are very cosy, but personally i think the original, one-piece foot types look like muppet feet (shows age). They seem to be diversifying now and come in more attractive shapes, like ugg kensington or inside converse type boots, which, i think look more stylish.
Don't think original uggs were ever stylish, just cosy and cute in an ugly baby sort of way.

comelywenchlywoo · 24/11/2012 09:23

My uggs are really comfy, but I worry about them if I get caught in the rain/mud, which spoils my enjoyment somewhat. I wish I'd got the Celtic sheepskin aqualambs that I asked for, but it was Christmas eve and DH hadn't bought my prezzie yet so it had to come from the highstreet.

I think I might have to bite the bullet and get some skinny jeans - my straight leg jeans keeping falling out. Yes I certainly wish I had my time again to buy my sheepskin boots. I NEVER regret my skeepskin slippers tho. Would never have any other kind. Havaianas in summer and celtic sheepskin slippers in winter: toastie

Londonista1975 · 24/11/2012 10:07

If I ever go to Oz and New Zealand then that's when I'll worry about what the people there think.

OrbisNonSufficit · 24/11/2012 11:00

I have a slightly different perspective on uggs since I grew up in Australia, where they are slippers and have been around for years (long before the yanks stole them and made them insanely expensive). I think it looks odd to wear them outside since they're slippers... Comfy, yes. Outside, no. It's like walking around outside in a dressing gown and pjs.

And I'm baffled as to why something that cost $20 when I was growing up is now £200. Also confused about the discussion on 'fake' uggs - there is no such thing, uggs isn't a brand name to me (the US company ugg australia, which isn't Australian, actually sued Australian ugg boot manufacturers for trademark infringement and lost because it's a generic term in Australia).

LauriesFairyonthetreeeatsCake · 24/11/2012 11:11

I have 3 pairs of Celtic Sheepskin boots and they're just the best quality.

squoosh · 24/11/2012 11:12

Interesting about the generic Ugg term Orbis, didn't know that. I assumed it had always been a brand.

bishboschone · 24/11/2012 11:23

Ugg mum .. I'm the same .. Uggs or havaianas . My feet won't tolerate much else !

bishboschone · 24/11/2012 11:52

Orbis, I think reference to fake uggs are non deckers and non sheepskin.

gazzalw · 24/11/2012 11:54

Some of the young mums at school wear the Primark versions which just look so naff, quite apart from being really bad for their feet. However some of the mums have the real McCoy and Emus too and they look good. DW can never get round the 'stigma' attached to them and would never be seen dead in a pair but she dislikes tribalism and perceives these as a marker of certain tribes of women....

I've been a frequent visitor to Oz since the 70s (long story). I have no memory of Uggs as slippers, though I don't doubt it However my early and abiding memory of them are as worn by beach honeys hanging around their surfer boy friends. Think surfer groupies.

I would not have bought them to save my life.

Years have passed and I have 3 pairs, one bought in Oz at the factory in 2004, where I signed the petition to stop them being made in California.

Those were ankle length, brown bog standard Uggs. I have two pairs of Bailey Buttons too. One black, one grey pair.

I dont think of them as a fashion item, but they're bloody lovely and cosy.
