Uggs - are they really that bad?

After a class war broke out on another completely unrelated thread, it came up that UGGs are considered a serious no-no on MN. I must confess to owning two pairs (one black and one brown) and as a WFHM I wear them all winter provided it is dry. They are the comfiest, warmest shoes I've ever had. They are like slippers but for outside! I don't wear them on the outside of my trousers, this is a look I don't like, but inside a boot leg I consider them harmless.

Am I deluding myself and walking around in the winter version of crocs?

Love my Uggs. Shamelessly

FobblyWoof · 23/11/2012 11:48

Thanks too immature. Now I want those boots, really quite badly. Sad

ScrambledSmegs · 23/11/2012 12:06

I love my Uggs. They're Jumbo Uggs from Australia bought in the sale, not the confusingly named UGG Australia which is owned by the US company Deckers. I only use them as slippers though, as I find the lack of adequate support for high insteps uncomfortable for walking any distance. Seems a bit pointless to put orthotics in them! I have tried UGG boots on and yes, I have the same problem with them too.

But that's personal choice. The only time I ever look a bit Hmm at people wearing them is if they're out in the rain in the suede ones, as that wrecks an expensive boot. It's mainly teens who do that though.

I'm very interested in these Celtic sheepskin ones, I may give them a try when my current boots fall to bits. They're more expensive than ordering the sale ones from Jumbo Uggs though, even with postage included!

nellieellie · 23/11/2012 12:12

I have vegetarian version - from the vegetarian shoe shop in Brighton. Brilliant. Much cheaper but so hard wearing, so comfy. _I think they look good but sartorial elegance may not be my strong point.............

QuickLookBusy · 23/11/2012 12:20

Well, I often wear my Kensington uggs with my Barbour jacket.Shock

But I do live in the countryside and here we don't really tend to judge people as much. Actually we don't give a damn about what we are "supposed" to be wearing, according to what a couple of fashion experts has decided is "in" this season.

Practicality and comfort all the way for me.

SparkyTGD · 23/11/2012 12:23

nellie what are they like size-wise?

They do look good (IMO).

I don't like to wear major brands/things that are obviously branded so that puts me off Uggs. Also don't like the sole of most of the Uggs.

nipersvest · 23/11/2012 12:26

same as scrambled said, my uggs, although they are not ugg uggs, they are sheepskin boots but are sketchers, are slippers. wouldn't wear them outside. in this house its crocs = beach, uggs = slippers.

bishboschone · 23/11/2012 12:42

Fobbly.... There is 20% off today .

ToncanLancey · 23/11/2012 13:44

I got a pair of chestnut classics for my mums partner (he'd lost loads of weight though illness and was always freezing). He loved them! Think my mum was quite relieved when they eventually fell apart and the bin beckoned.

TuppenceBeresford · 23/11/2012 13:47

I didn't think they were ever fashionable - maybe for about 5 minutes, like 12 years ago?? I love my Uggs though, and unless I move to somewhere like the Caribbean I won't be giving them up any time soon! I may look ridiculous but I would rather be ridiculous than cold.

I don't know if I'd advise anyone else to get them though as they do nothing for one's style credentials - once I tried them, they were so comfy I ended up wanting to wear them with everthing = fashion fail!

I am currently wearing skinny jeans and short uggs. In my defence, I don't think mine look so bad as I have very small feet and they are children's uggs... but maybe I am deluded.

Lionsntigersnbears · 23/11/2012 14:38

some styles are 60% off on the Uggs site today. I'm sorely tempted!!

squoosh · 23/11/2012 14:44

My Dad's brother who lives in Australia has sent him a pair of slippers (Uggs) every couple of years since the early 90s. A few years ago when the Ugg craze took off my Dad asked me why he suddenly saw all these young girls walking down the street in his slippers.

He was properly befuddled Grin

bishboschone · 23/11/2012 14:51

Are you sure lion, there are loads of fake websites that look convincing .

Sucksoutthejoy · 23/11/2012 15:00

Moved to Australia and was laughed at (out loud, in my face) for wearing Uggs to work in winter. Apparently the equivalent of going to work in your pyjamas Blush Can't quite love mine the same way now. Dilemma as coming home to cold UK in 4 weeks for a visit!

Sucksoutthejoy · 23/11/2012 15:01

Aaah didn't read Squooshs post before posting!

It's great isn't it? Grin

worldgonecrazy · 23/11/2012 15:18

lions I think you're looking at a website selling fakes. The official Ugg website hasn't got any promotions running on it.

I just did a quick google and a really good suggestion came up. Put the web address into www.domaintools.com and it will come up with the details. Addresses in the Far East are a give away of fake sites.

MentalMinnie · 23/11/2012 15:38

Hello! I'm a newbie on MN.

I love my Uggs shamelessly! I've got the knitted ones, and think i'm going to buy the Tall Bailey Buttons next week!

Question though: Has anyone else with the knitted Uggs every put them in the washing machine successfully? The knitted outter is a bit smelly from dogs etc.

QOD · 23/11/2012 17:37

These are my faves ....

I haven't worn my other 3 Uggs hardly since getting these.

I have Ugg shoes too

They are starting their 3rd winter ... I think I've saved a fortune, I don't have any other winter footwear, I swap between my Boots that are from 4yrs down to 2 months old

Zara1984 · 23/11/2012 17:40

I am a Kiwi, sorry but they are slippers. Seriously. They are for wearing inside your fecking freezing cold uninsulated Antipodean house in winter. It's like wearing thermal longjohns as trousers.

No no no no no

ArielThePiraticalMermaid · 23/11/2012 17:43

Tbh I think it would be cheaper to actually get your home insulated than buy Ugh slippers.

ArielThePiraticalMermaid · 23/11/2012 17:44

Oh the irony of autocorrect.

Zara1984 · 23/11/2012 17:46

Grin ariel but waking up with frost on your duvet (yes, this used to happen to me in Auckland) is a badge of pride!

Ugh boots indeed! They are sheepskin slippers!!!

What really boggles me is when I see women wearing them in the snow or rain!!

RooneyMara · 23/11/2012 17:49

Just wanted to say, I've no opinion on Uggs but I got a strange email today purporting to be from some Ugg company, which was written in very bad English but with fairly convincing graphics/layout.

I nearly clicked on it to unsubscribe before reading the copy, which was dreadful - so I just deleted it/blocked sender.

Watch out. It also said I'd been sent it because of visiting their store but I've never looked at Uggs online, I don't think.

ScrambledSmegs · 23/11/2012 18:36

Yeah, I reckon my antipodean SIL would disown me if I wore my uggs out in the street!

I understand why people wear them outdoors (they're so warm and snuggly!) so I'm not about to judge anyone for wearing something they feel comfortable in. Well, as long as they're not part of this outfit!
