I mean, I can get in to them, but not 'into' them, iyswim.

I am probably frumpy but at least they don't cut of the circulation to below my knees!

I am a superdry hoodie and converse shoes type of person tho not a glamerous person!

Justreadthefuckingwords · 25/10/2012 13:43

Now I like a skinny flare (and a flare) but would never, ever, ever, ever, ever wear them with flats, that way mumsy frumpdom lies, heels all the way.

If you want to wear flats a rolled up straight let is much better if you can't do a skinny.

wildfig · 25/10/2012 13:57

I cannot wear skinny jeans either. It's horrible for everyone, horrible for me feeling like a big parsnip, horrible for passers-by who have to look at my thighs in all their bulging glory, horrible for small children who hide their tiny faces at the sheer wrongness of the lady's legs.

I wear Gap Sexy Boot jeans which are effectively skinny flares; they're quite tight to the calf, but the flare balances chunky thighs better than the ruthless carrot-y tapering effect of skinnies. The very Italian style advisor in my nearest Gap made me buy them, and she looked pretty cool so I was willing to take her advice. I do however have a very fierce face - that's fierce in the normal 'scary' sense, not the fashion sense - so I imagine that if passers-by do think I'm wearing frumpy bootcuts they'd be far too afraid to tell me.

Caerlaverock · 25/10/2012 14:28

Arf @ parsnip. Why not wear straights? I love straights

espanol · 25/10/2012 14:39

I had a personal styling session yesterday. We talked jeans. I am a pear. In fact, I am actually a parsnip like wildfig. I look mahoosive and short in them like you spicandspan. But I still actually really like them and think I can just about pass muster if I wear heels with them. Unfortunately I can't walk in heels and tend to wear converse so this is a bad look for me. This is what she said:

  1. Skinnys are bad on a pear/parsnip/large-arsed/large-hipped body unless you wear them tucked into knee high boots. Then they make you look less massive because the boots balance out your hips and arse. A heeled boot is even better than a flat as it elongates your leg which is great if you worry about being a bit short.

  2. Boot cut/flares are the best shape in general if you're not skinny-hipped as they balance the hips out. Having said that, if you wear boot cuts, never ever wear them with ballet flats as you have a twee little shoe surrounded by loads of fabric and it looks rubbish. Wear heels, wear boots, wear something sturdy, but not ballet shoes. Ballet flats only work with skinnier jeans.

  3. Straights are a much better alternative to skinnys for this shape if you can't bear to go boot cut. Again, they'll look even better tucked into boots.

Bear in mind I am a 30 something mum who likes to look good but not at all cutting edge fashionista, so she tailored her advice to me. I have no intention of being a frump, and I refuse to buy Boden in a vain attempt to not be yet another middle class mum at the school gates, but I'd rather look a bit mumsy but slim in boot cuts, than trendy in skinnys but resembling a parsnip in a pear tree :o

wildfig · 25/10/2012 14:49

I totally agree on the heels - my one saving grace is that I'm 5'7" and always wear the highest chunky boots I can get away with under my jeans (a bit like celebrity retro parsnip Mae West wearing floor-length fishtail dresses and then standing on a box hidden underneath to make herself look taller/thinner)

Straight, alas, don't work. They just look like apologetic skinnies on me, and actually make me look fatter than I actually am. And I quite like the 70s rocker feel of skinny flares...

straighttohellymelly · 25/10/2012 14:54

wildfig- thankyou, am in bed with kideny infection and your posts made me laugh for the first time in days.

spicandspan · 25/10/2012 15:45

There is no way in hell you will get me in skinny jeans plus heels. I will look like an inverted triangle.

Skinny jeans and boots - that's ok?

So... if I got some skinnys JUST TO WEAR WITH BOOTS, what do I do when I go to someone's house and have to remove the boots? I will look short and fat.

And for the rest of the time - if I am only supposed to wear skinny flares with heels, what can I wear flats with? I don't do pumps (stupid little shoes) but I do do converse-type trainers, and I have some shoes a bit like this:

<a class="break-all" href="http://www.google.co.uk/imgres?q=clarks+juju&hl=en&sa=X&rls=com.microsoft:en-gb:IE-Address&rlz=1I7GGNI_en-GBGB480&biw=1140&bih=562&tbm=isch&prmd=imvns&tbnid=waEz5Mp25Mfd9M:&imgrefurl=stores.ebay.co.uk/Clogs-and-Togs&docid=PHjlNFEjpfEsnM&imgurl=thumbs3.ebaystatic.com/pict/1606902667024040_1.jpg&w=140&h=110&ei=PlCJUIHKM6iy0QXn-4GYBA&zoom=1&iact=hc&vpx=110&vpy=341&dur=1577&hovh=88&hovw=112&tx=65&ty=49&sig=117501896239980861972&page=1&tbnh=88&tbnw=104&start=0&ndsp=18&ved=1t:429,r:6,s:0,i:87" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">sort of like these

What shouls I wear with them? Don't tell me you hate them, I don't care.

And do i really need 3 pairs -
skinnys (to werar with boots only)
short skinny flares to wear with trainers / flats
medium skinny flares to wear with heels?

OP posts:
espanol · 25/10/2012 15:51

Converse are fine with flares/bootcut (they fit into the 'sturdy' category - I wear them 90% of the time!), and I reckon your shoes are too. It's really just ballet flats which are very skimpy tiny shoes that can look a bit swamped.

Re going to houses: if you're friends enough to take off your boots then I reckon you're friends enough to not worry about feeling short/fat for the time you're there :) That's what I tell myself anyway :)

straighttohellymelly · 25/10/2012 15:52

Er KIDNEY not kideny. Every bloody time i try and type kidney I actually type kideny. Urggh.

spicandspan · 25/10/2012 15:58

right. thanks espanol. May need to order from dorothy perkins link up thread considering they are reduced to £15...:0)

NYDJ jeggings. They look like skinny jeans but are utterly comfy and sit on the waist. Took me weeks to get over the cost but have barely taken them off and haven't worn any other jeans since I bought them. I'm a size 10 but only 5'4" and fairly generously padded in the bum and thigh area.

Buy a size smaller though - I'm an 8 in them :)

Bunbaker · 25/10/2012 16:02

I have these and they are brilliant. Not too skinny, not too low rise and a really good fit on my pear shape.

They wash well too.

spicandspan · 25/10/2012 16:04

I will look shit in jeggings or those bunbaker, unless i wear boots with them

OP posts:
CharlotteBronteSaurus · 25/10/2012 16:06

try some on with lots and lots of different shoes
i definitely need a really chunky boot, either tall or ankle, to help balance out my thunder thighs

spicandspan · 25/10/2012 16:06

what does everyone think of wide leg jeans?

OP posts:
Muststudy · 25/10/2012 16:07

Im all about the skinny flare - have the dp ones and asda ones because i got them post-birth........once back at current weight I will invest. I think they are classics!

fuckadoodlepoopoo · 25/10/2012 16:17

Can't believe some people think bootcut and skinny flare are the same thing! Shock

spicandspan · 25/10/2012 17:25

ooh, do they do them in asda? [planning late night shopping trip...]

OP posts:
spicandspan · 25/10/2012 17:26

whats the difference fuckadoodle? (feel a bit rude calling you that...)

OP posts:
fuckadoodlepoopoo · 25/10/2012 19:27

The shape of the cut is different. Bit hard to explain in words. But the result is that the flared ones look cool and the boot cut look old fashioned [helpful - not!]

fuckadoodlepoopoo · 25/10/2012 19:28

Im doing the different shapes in the air with my fingers . . . is that helpful to you?

Grin
wordfactory · 25/10/2012 19:37

What you absolutely must do is get the cut that suits your shape the most. Being drawn to the wrong cut because it's more trendy etc is a trecipe for disaster.

You will look terrible and feel terrible!

NotGoodNotBad · 25/10/2012 19:55

True about the hips - skinnies look good on boyish teenagers. Otherwise, I'm not convinced.
