Dona how funny re shop cocktail party.

I don't mind winter clothes, but I hate getting in the car bundled in layers. And probably need a new coat for some variation, even though I love the one I have.

DonaAna · 01/11/2012 15:14

Traveling, wearing boring winter clothes.
Jeans, v-neck long-sleeved shirt, D&G boucle jacket, brown ankle boots.

I read the Oct US Vogue on plane. They had great fall looks (my dream coat would be a cherry red Dior couture bar coat worn with a metal belt) but all of them involved flashing bare ankles, coats that remain open or deeply slashed. I adore the new big O-line coats, and in fact happen to have one - by Marni. But it has shortish sleeves and is very thin - no go on a chilly, breezy, rainy day when it's 3C outside. They also had a touching budget feature that had a fake fur coat from Macy's that was about USD 150. Perhaps cheaper than couture, but still not an impulse purchase for most... With the accessories, the 'budget' outfit was worth about USD 1000...

I have a lot of great coats but the missing link is boots that would work with them (still waiting for my bespoke pair to arrive). Once I get them, I can do a lot of Dr Zhivago looks.

I bought a pair of handmade cashmere-lined Sermoneta leather gloves at the airport on my way out. Worth every penny, my favorite thing to wear in winter.

I bring new clothes new!

The Chan Luu scarf is an absolutely beauty. Totally gorgeous, perfect colour, enormous (which is compulsory in my world), really cosy and soft, but light and fine enough to squash into a bag easily.

The latest leather leggings have also arrived (bought with good discount code), and although I haven't had time to try them on in daylight, they are looking pretty promising with a few different outfits. My mission is now to see if I can find something that would do the same job for much less £££, before I commit to keeping them.

mignonette · 02/11/2012 09:47

I just ordered a last season linen/cotton cardigan from Vera Wang-pretty and cream, it'll go with everything. A.P.C boots sound wonderful, Marsha...And that slate/petrol shade is lovely, Hopefully. Are you on pinterest?

Just reading Nov US Vogue with boringly suck up interview with Rihanna. Great photo shoot with Karli Kloss though posing with the children of one of the Rag&Bone designers. I love Karli Kloss and she's on Pinterest. Also like Raquel Zimmerman especially after seeing her in 'The September Issue' wearing gorgeous couture at Versailles eating a massive gateau!

My current favourite model though is Arizona Muse. She is other-world compelling. Who are your favourite models?

MarshaBrady · 02/11/2012 11:04

Oh you've mentioned my two favourites! I didn't know Arizona Muse's name, but just googled and I love her look.

Also love a very tall blonde I see on pin, but can't remember her name. Will see if I can find it.

MarshaBrady · 02/11/2012 11:05

Well done Hopefully! Look forward to the blog update, the Big Keeper Question.

Mignonette Wang sounds lovely and Dona your cashmere lined gloves too.

mignonette · 02/11/2012 11:15

Am loving these from the Saatchi store -

Nothing fashion related to contribute but just dropping in to say that DS has chicken pox! So plans for my big 40th celebrations are currently being revised Sad
I'll probably be sat at home in my party dress watching X Factor!
Have lovely weekends all x

DonaAna · 02/11/2012 14:31

I bet Marsha loves Natasha Poly.
Arizona and Karlie are great.
Most of my work is done although I'll stay in cold & wet North until Wed.
Just retrieved my Lanvin dress, mink stole and many other things from my apt here. Best find: short Ilse Jacobsen rain boots!

mignonette · 02/11/2012 17:07

Oh shop may DS feel better soon!

Hopefully · 02/11/2012 17:41

Ooh, Lanvin dresses aplenty on the thread now! Not in my life though, tragically Grin

Shop hope your DS is feeling OK. How are the plan revisions going?

Am clueless about models, will now have to go and google them all.

MarshaBrady · 04/11/2012 17:56

Shop oh no was it this weekend? Is it your birthday? If so happy birthday!

I had a pinge of ooh I'd love that at the mention of Dona's Lanvin which is crazy as I have one already. I get that with the raspberry Céline too.

Yes NP is a good one! Also another that I saw and now can't remember. Ah thought I would remember, now it's gone.

DonaAna · 04/11/2012 19:46

My Lanvin needs a good very low-cut bra. Inspired by the bra-fitting threads here, I measured myself. Really worth doing - I thought I was a B-cup, turns out I've expanded I have enough material to fill a D-cup Shock Now I have several bras that are literally shrink-wrapped to my curves. Feel amazing.

To celebrate, I had a mini shopping binge at my favorite department store.
I bought three bras and quite a few fitted sweaters:
Filippa K mohair tunic length sweater (reminds me of the 1980s ones I made myself)
Repeat draped merino cardigan
bright pink merino sweater

I also got a message saying that my fitted boots are on their way to Rome.
Ready for winter now.

mignonette · 05/11/2012 08:17

I don't like all these padded foam stuffed bra's that dominate a lot of stores. I wear a mixture of soft cup or underwired. It's hard to find delicate bra's too-so many are over adorned with trimmings that are too intrusive under clothes. I have some smooth Bodas types but do like a wispy lace bra and fortunately I can still go without one. These are two of my newest ones-

pinterest.com/pin/457326537130262656/

pinterest.com/pin/457326537130262668/

Stella McCartney makes great ones. Have boycotted Elle MCPherson's range since her interview in which she stated she used Chinese medicine with Rhino horn in and then tried to claim she'd never said that and was joking....(slight deviation off point)...

Any other recommendations for less well known underwear lines would be lovely..

Hopefully · 05/11/2012 08:25

Envy Mignonette! I need something more akin to industrial scaffolding now. It's not that I've got huge boobs (I'm about a 32D), but two lots of pregnancy, BFing, and way too much weight fluctuation over my adult life means they are, ahem, not what they once were! I like Panache and Lejaby, need to go to a proper bra shop though - I am finding that fewer and fewer bras are right for me, so need to go and try a bunch on rather than just ordering my old faithfuls from Figleaves.

mignonette · 05/11/2012 08:50

Will look at Lejaby- I do like French brands as they seem to be less 'over designed'. I just try on loads of different sizes until I find one that fits. I get a different size according to who makes the bra- there is no standardisation.

mignonette · 05/11/2012 08:52

I've never minded having small breasts although BF gave me one hello of a pair for a while. I'm not tall and neither is DD but she's inherited her paternal GM's rack and hates havinbg such large breasts for her frame. She's already talking reduction...

MarshaBrady · 05/11/2012 12:29

I love your jumpers Dona and really need to catch up with knit wear. Am really tired of all the really old ones and need some new ones. But wondering when the sales will start.

I like Bodas too and have some of those. I'm happy to be a smaller size and always have been. I should buy some more underwear really, so expensive.

I just checked my Rigby & Peller ones and it turns out that I bought Lejaby too. Very nice, although do hand wash them. Do you all bother to hand wash these expensive bras or delicate cycle?

Hopefully · 05/11/2012 15:08

Marsha I have given up all knitwear hope and ordered one Topshop acrylic nightmare to see me through. I prefer done knits so hoping to get some in spring if nothing in the sales. Also waiting on delivery of a Pure Collection boyfriend sweater, but not confident it will be good.

Fwiw I was bras in a lingerie bag on the cold gentle cycle, usually with my cashmere and silk. I normally make myself hand wash for a month or two when I buy new bras before giving up and machining them - I figure it extends their lives a little bit at least!

Hopefully · 05/11/2012 15:09

fine knits.

mignonette · 05/11/2012 15:24

Marsha I put them in a lingerie bag and wash on silks/delicates cycle. I've yet to have a disaster....I tend to wash everything unless it is embellished/beaded or has a lining that clearly will shrink-I hate acetate linings. They are beasts for twisting and shrinking and even pretty expensive clothes can be afflicted with them. Plum Sykes wrote a really good piece in US Vogue about how so many designer clothes shed buttons/trims because they are made so shoddily.

And whilst on the topic of shoddy designer stuff, I had to contact MyWardobe.com to arrange the return of that brand new Moschino shoulder bag after the clasp snapped off last friday. Glad I didn't pay full price. I'll add that to the list of rubbish bags which includes the new black leather studded Michael Kors tote (from NetaPorter) with a strap that snapped off whilst i was in Paris. had to buy another bag there; the Mulberry leopard calfhair Alexa where the hair on the hide is rubbing away; the Westwood belt with a clasp that lasted 6 days before snapping off; the Marant boots which developed separation anxiety between the sole and upper (Otway make); the Rag&Bone jeans that lost 3 studs in a week.....it goes on and on.....

So.......Am very happy because I went mining for old clothes in my loft and struck gold-

A silver lacey knit mohair/angora V neck of indeterminate 'parentage';
A dark pink and charcoal grey stripe 'Sid Vicious' mohair sweater from '02-03 TopShop unmolested by moths;
A peacock blue crew neck shetland wool with a black/green banded stripe across the chest (better than it sounds);
two boiled wool cropped (waist length) sweaters =, one in baby blue, one dark cream with little wide neck and gorgeous 3/5 sleeves from goodness knows where;
Seasalt Shetland pale lime green cardigan.

Will photo them and put on pin as so proud......Wink

DonaAna · 05/11/2012 16:04

Mig sorry to hear about the bags - luxury really has lost its luster. I will not be duped into buying a mediocre bag at premium prices any more (goodbye Mulberry).

I was all my underwear in a normal 40C wash and they stay good for years and years (recently I've outgrown my bras, not outworn them) - we line-dry, no dryer, ever. That said, I'm not into super-wispy lacy things - lace simply isn't me (although the ones Mig linked to are simply stunning, very tempting).

If someone needs an unstructured, wispy bra on a budged, COS had some nice ones. I like firm (but not overpadded) cups that hide my nipples. I'm all about the t-shirt bra, the simpler the better. Like Hopefully, I see a bra as scaffolding - I like simple and tailored clothes and just need clean and smooth curves underneath. Seeing bumps and lacy shapes under my clothes bothers me. I wear strapless bras every day: bandeau styles that are quite broad at back give enough support. I go for decent quality - cheap supermarket or H&M bras have never felt right on me, they don't wash well. But I haven't acquired a La Perla habit yet Grin.

I'm utterly in love with my Filippa K sweater! It's a cool plummy burgundy, very flattering and super comforting. Might work as a very short dress too. Lots of higher-end knits had acrylic and other nasties in them

I'm a line dryer too, Dona. I love the smell. here is what arrived today for a stepDD.

I remembered you praising Zatchels so bought her one. I also love their bronze metallic bucket bag.

mignonette · 05/11/2012 16:40

Broke that link- here it is

pinterest.com/pin/457326537130261530/

I have smooth bras for T shirt wearing; I really miss Gossard Glossies in that respect because the skin tones do not show under white and cream. But I do prefer a light bra because I prefer the natural shape of the breast under clothing. For that reason, padding has never been for me despite my lack of oomph...Smile...Those teenage bras in places like H&M or those Kelly Brook ones that look like foam hanging baskets would drown me. I'd be a little walking brassiere and nothing else!

I'm not a fan of ribbons and bows under day clothing, but think lace soft cup bras can look beautiful under say, that Marant lace blouse. I'm not keen on the coloured bra strap peeping out though Carrie Bradshaw style.
