Have just bought this Vera Wang basic linen/wool/cotton mix cardigan as it'll be a good staple for me-

I have lots of bras like these- they do not show too much under clothes and are so comfortable I do not notice I'm wearing a bra. And it took me until my mid twenties to start wearing one-

I love this Margaret Howell sweater and have several of her clothes...

Love that MHL sweater Mignon. Am so tempted. But think I should wait for the sales really.

Value is a funny thing isn't it. I can splash out of stuff that I think is worth it, but will only buy tuna when it's two for the price of one. I am shocked at the price of tuna Grin

Bras fit in the middle, along with hair cuts. Will spend a lot on each item, but with a little bit of hmmm it's so much! and try and make them last for ages.

shopafrolic · 05/11/2012 17:59

Hi all - just checking back in and loving the lingerie chat. I recently bought a pretty Elle McPherson set but am now feeling guilty having read your comments Mignonette. I also bought a plain nude t-shirt bra by Princesse TamTam which works well for me (I'm a 32E)
So, the birthday weekend....... DS was poorly throughout so dinner out with DH was cancelled as predicted. But a big family lunch with close friends went ahead yesterday with DH staying home to look after DS. I wore this:

with these:
pinterest.com/pin/122230577357069675/
and opaque tights as it was so wet and rainy. I had a blue, black and grey animal print scarf and black leather biker jacket - felt good!
My parents have given me a fabulous coffee table book about fashion and costume through the ages:
www.amazon.co.uk/Fashion-DK/dp/1405398795/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1352137305&sr=1-1
and a friend bought me this rather lovely scarf
www.mintvelvet.co.uk/fauna-print-scarf/scarves/mint-v/fcp-product/2293
I have also been given enough vouchers to be able to buy the Michael Kors watch I was after so I'm feeling very spoilt!
I'm loving all the knitwear talk - I seem to have got lily pollen on my Reiss jumper that I bought - any ideas how to remove gratefully received!

P.S. I loved this on Melissa George on the Jonathan Ross show this weekend. It looked better on her than it does here!

Am having hissy fit inside my head because it has just cost £970 to get car through MOT.....I know it's our safety (especially the four new tyres) but I can't help thinking what a boring thing to spend all that money on....Sad

I dislike spending lots on haircuts as price/salon swank appears to have no correlation with quality of the cut and the stylists ability to actually listen to what I am saying (apologies to all good, attentive stylists out there)

. I have personality disordered hair; it'll only stay how it wants to stay so I just have it trimmed and let it do it's thing..

Re Tuna, the price of tin, rubber, wheat, chocolate has shot up so that probably explains why all tinned goods have shot up and pasta is due to go through the roof soon (well, the price is) so I have been stockpiling it as resent paying a fortune for what really is a basic product in our house. De Cecco has been on offer in Asda and also in Waitrose intermittently.

I do love my underwear and will lash out on it and buy lots of it. DH appreciates it too Smile. I do not like spending on socks and get annoyed at the generally rubbish quality of most hosiery. Have resorted to Nora Batty woolly tights because they do last longer although Opaques sometimes have to be worn. I am all about the 'leg hug' offered by woollen tights with a little cotton and lycra in.

Probably spend least on jewellery because 1) I lose it; 2) I break it; 3) my job in psychiatry means I'm advised not to wear things around my neck or in my ears that can be torn out. Sounds lovely....I had an amazing watch and ripped the links apart on the edge of my freezer so that was that and I haven't bothered replacing it. I have a Russian wedding ring I adore and some lovely inherited Cameo rings/earrings plus some Opals from Brazil (Dad worked there) awaiting setting and an antique pearl ring that I just look at and adore from its safety in a jewellery box. The rest of my jewellery collection I'm a bit meh about really...

mignonette · 05/11/2012 18:21

Oh Shop, I didn't want to rain on your lingerie parade. You didn't know.

That scarf is so lovely I think I'm going to have to buy one. Since DD moved out taking her lovely scarf collection, I'm a bit bored with mine.
And the Reiss shoes are reminiscent of Bottega Venetta's lovely basket weave leather. Love them and the dress.

RE Lily pollen- If it's not rubbed in you can lightly press sellotape against it and it should lift off. Let the pollen lose it's 'freshness', don't try it on new pollen stains.

Another way is to press against it with the another piece of the same fabric. Said to work but I'd be too scared to try.

I'm so little I'd be able to stand in the split on that skirt- definitely a style for tall elegant women not short ones!

MarshaBrady · 05/11/2012 18:40

Me too. On all accounts.

MOT today too! We did new tyres last year, and now need to see a garage about something. I though Kwik Fit did everything but apparently not.

Socks meh for me too I buy the simplest cotton ones I can find. And jewellery. I don't really wear it, engagement ring a family heirloom and wedding ring. Simple-ish but lovely watch from SCP in Shoreditch, no necklaces or earrings.

Shop great to see you post-birthday. Love your outfit very much, the shoes are amazing. And the lovely presents. Hope your ds is feeling better too.

Dona it's fab, good buy.

mignonette · 05/11/2012 18:53

We went to KwikFit. I do generally trust them not to load more 'problems' onto the bill because I am not a big hairy man....

We had new tyres on first then a service then MOT which they then called us to tell us it was a fail and did we want the work doing? Like we have a choice.....Our brakes were apparently only just inside the cut off point for halting the MOT as an automatic fail which if they had not have been would have cost us for two MOTs- the 2nd after they were repaired for all the other things not checked because of the legal requirement regarding automatic fails. And our car is only 2 years old!

MarshaBrady · 05/11/2012 19:02

Sheesh! Ours is not very old but has embarrassing number of miles on it. It was a bit of risk buying it so every time it passes its MOT we think phew.

Although the problem is an oil leak. I did think KwikFit could fix that, but hey ho. I trust the local KF too, and don't think they'd rip me off. And I look like and am some one who knows very little about cars.

Hopefully · 06/11/2012 16:08

I bloody hate MOT time (ours is nearing) - always seems such a waste of money. Obviously I know it isn't, but I loathe spending it nonetheless!

Am feeling v bloaty still after cinema trip last night - too much chocolate, fizzy drink and popcorn!

I like both v cheap and v expensive (well, for me. Obviously we are not talking Beckham-league) jewellery. I like the idea of having a couple of nice pieces to hand on to someone (no idea who, I only have sons! Future DILs maybe), but then I also like having a selection of big, easy to wear pieces, and my budget is not up to precious metal jewellery in those kinds of sizes!

MarshaBrady · 06/11/2012 18:21

Funny isn't it a year is quite a long time but the MOT always feels really fast. And all the bits that go with it.

Yes I would not rule out top of the range diamond jewellery that is true! Particularly for evening dress. But slight budget issue there.

mignonette · 08/11/2012 08:19

Waking up and shopping at 7 a.m. Not sure whether I am being efficient or I have a problem.

here is what I bought from Cocosa. I do love Mimi Holliday lingerie.

Cocosa also has up to 67% off of Diane Von Furstenburg with some lovely day dresses, shirts and skirts. There's also Goat and Pringle on sale.

mignonette · 08/11/2012 08:21

My dream is a Cartier Love Bangle just to continue the jewellery theme...It's screwed on so I won't lose it!

DonaAna · 08/11/2012 08:59

Morning all! Back in Rome. It was over 20C in Rome last night - quite a change after a day of light snowfall!!! Lovely to see DH and DC after a long trip.

My tall bespoke riding boots have arrived, they are black and fit great. I could have asked them to make them even taller, turns out I have really long legs. But the fit is lovely, they are very comfortable and I'm not sure whether I'll ever take them off.

Wearing with them a very short old Zara A-line mini, my Filippa K long plum-colored sweater, black opaques and a steel bangle from COS. And my big rose quartz cocktail ring. Can already see that the new boots and opaques will be my winter uniform... Depending on how much I like these I might also get another chestnut-colored pair (to be worn with navy clothes).

The new bras have made a big difference how my tops fit. For the first time, I feel the bra is really doing things for me - actual support and comfort and great shaping. (As a relatively small-breasted woman, I've always thought bras are just decorative. I wonder whether I should explore corsets next...)

Had a good flight last night. Had quite a lot of luggage so upgraded myself to business class (was almost alone there - lots and lots of space and very attentive service) and enjoyed champagne, a great meal, reading the new Tom Wolfe novel and Nov British Vogue. The latter had really great photos (I love, love, love the pared down Phoebe Philo for Celine looks - particularly the white ice-skate-like zipper boots). I like minimalism - I love Raf Simons, Celine, Calvin Klein - sculptural simple but stunning looks. Some parts of Vogue were pretty pathetic though. For example their online shopping guide - ho hum, MN has covered that ground long ago. And some of the writing is pretty excruciating.

Mig I'm clearly a binge shopper but I've adhered to my budget this fall and am quite happy with the things I've bought so far. Shopping can become very addictive though, online shopping in particular - I realized during the summer that I'm sometimes doing it to lift my mood or to fill up empty boring moments. I've unsubscribed all shop newsletters and will try to consider all purchases for some time (days, weeks) before committing. Boots and bras were carefully planned. My three new sweaters were impulse buys (and not from sale) but they were not super-expensive, they update my very dull winter wardrobe and I will not be back at home before end of Jan (when the sales are over). The Filippa K has great CPW status already - I simply can't take it off Grin.

Right, need to go back to get luggages sorted, to shop for some food (craving calf liver), and to enjoy the sunshine and blue skies outdoors.

What are you all wearing today?

mignonette · 08/11/2012 09:30

Sunny and crisp here today. Glad you had a safe flight, Dona. Who did you travel with-Alitalia and where did you travel to if you are happy to say that online? I do find solo travel a luxury where you can be unreachable and all one has to do is sleep or eat or read for pleasure. We've just booked flights to New Orleans as want to obviously visit NoLa but also plan to travel to Beau Bridge for the Cajun dance breakfasts there. We are then travelling onto Austin for the SouthBySouthWest music festival as have friends in Austin who can buy all access passes at special 'local's rates for us.

I took inspiration from your 'Shopping in my Closet' board Dona and raided my suitcases of clothes in the attic the other day. Found some good forgotten stuff and so glad to not have to buy loads of knitwear. So today I am wearing a new Vera Wang cream linen/cotton cardigan (slight slip up there re buying yet more cardigans), a DVF sage green leaf print blouse top with pleating from Cocosa a while back, JCrew cigarette pants in charcoal grey and heeled Paul Smith chunky shoes- they look like a high heeled brogue.

Love the sound of your boots. Although i am not very tall at all I have disproportionately long legs meaning I cannot easily find tights with enough length. I sometimes have to buy a size up to get the length because of the primitive sizing systems. Unless I buy high end and I deeply resent that.

My perfume is Secret Oudh.

Have just bought Dec Vogue with Vodianova on the cover- Sorry to say but Testino has made her look really odd. I do not like this cover and the theme 'Pop' seems a little incongruous with the Christmas season-are they trying to make the British edition more secular so as to appeal to non Western markets, I wonder? I do like a bit of seasonal kitsch! There's a nice Westfields sponsored shopping guide insert this month with the usual 'this is what I'd like for Christmas' features but some really good gift suggestions too- gorgeous felt fox booties from Heals for children and A Topshop clutch in the classic envelope style that I really really want but am having trouble tracking down the colourway they've featured which is a soft mole shade, pale skin pink and cream.

mignonette · 08/11/2012 14:16

Quick post. here is the TopShop clutch but it is in a different colourway to the one in the Vogue Magazine December shopping supplement

MarshaBrady · 08/11/2012 15:30

Hey hey everyone, I'll have to check out Vogue Mignon.

Dona I feel the same about the Wang jumper, too handy almost.

I had a meeting to discuss a project today. Apart from actually doing the work, can I say just how much enjoy interviews and meetings to talk about what I know. I do love it.

Afterwards met dh for lunch and indulged in a brief but rather too expensive quick soup and plaice.

Weather is woolly in London now.

MarshaBrady · 08/11/2012 15:39

And I mentioned the meeting so to say what I am wearing, and forgot. APC apricot jumper, crisp white shirt buttoned, Wolford tights and pale mini, Lanvin suede black wedges.

mignonette · 08/11/2012 16:15

That apricot APC sounds beautiful Marsha.I keep trying to buy that TopShop clutch online but site continuously locks me out..

Have been on call with crisis response team all week due to residual kidney bug and because workplace seems to think wrestling with newly sectioned psych patients at 5 a.m alongside 4 police officers and a psychiatrist who just stood there and did nothing is some sort of convalescent option for run down RMN's!
So lots of time spent mooching about the internet, reading Vogue and making half hearted attempts to do something cerebrally enriching by reading nursing journals (ha) interspersed with call outs usually to cold dark homes in middle of the night and never quite sure as to what I'm going to find when I get there.....

shopafrolic · 08/11/2012 17:54

That clutch is fabulous mignon and I love the sound of everyone's outfits today.
DH and I went out for dinner with friends to a Jamie's Italian last night - obviously not as good as the real thing dona but good food and great company. I wore my printed A&W blouse with the blue chinos and my nude Floretes. It is so good to have a wardrobe that makes choosing an outfit a pleasure rather than a chore.
In shopping news I bought my watch today which I am thrilled with - really chunky and heavy
pinterest.com/pin/122230577358099262/
So now I just need to plan what to wear on Saturday night for dinner and cocktails with the girls!
A good week - so far being 40 is perfect!

OP posts:
DonaAna · 08/11/2012 19:08

Marsha you sound fabulous as always.

Shop what a great evening - and sorry for being late with this: happy birthday! (So happy you are taking it in stride, as mine is coming up in about 3 months.) And yes, a coordinated wardrobe is great.

Mig take it easy, enjoy the mags and the downtime!

I think my new snug tall boots are a great investment. Instead of boring jeans, I get to flaunt my legs in them - received quite a few lascivious winks from Italian men today Confused - was not expecting it as have spent the past week bundled up in totally dull and sexless bootcuts, wellies and padded coats. Gotta love Rome: "winter wear" can mean a sweater dress and a gilet here - or a boucle jacket, opaques, miniskirt and boots...

mignonette · 08/11/2012 20:28

sigh at Shops watch. Rose gold is so pretty. My Russian Wedding ring is rose and white gold.

I'll bet the local men loved those boots, Dona....Smile

Just ran out to TK Maxx in the hope of snapping up a Missoni scarf. No sign of them and there's a delivery later tonight so they'll call me if they come in.

But.... bought some Christmas gifts. Calvin Klein cashmere and angora grey scarf for StepM, a Y.M.C paisley silk scarf for DH, TwentyEightTwelve angora and cotton sweater for DD, black marl/fleck wool cardigan for me (another cardigan-I'm obsessed), a Johnsons of Elgin cashmere scarf for Gran (bit of a scarf theme going on here) and a whole load of Toni & Guy hair shampoos for the store cupboard.

Noticed a lot of Michael Kors jackets, coats and sweaters plus some lovely Chanel style jackets with fringed, frayed edge to edge lapels in a kind of tweedy space weave, Dents, Cynthia Rowley and Valentino scarves, Calvin Klein handbags and FatFace desert boots in jewel colours alongside brown and bottle green.

shopafrolic · 08/11/2012 20:56

Wow! Is that a London TK Maxx?

OP posts:
mignonette · 08/11/2012 21:38

I asked them and most of what I've mentioned is in most stores. Cambridge TK Maxx has the Missoni scarves according to a MNer on the TK Maxx thread.

I was impressed with the toiletries- lots of unusual niche brands as well as TiGi. Remembered I saw Michael Kors boxed scarves sets too.

dexter73 · 08/11/2012 21:50

You can buy the Missoni scarves online at TK Maxx.
