Ankle boots, what do I wear them with so they don't look like mum boots?

I'm 5'5" and size 12, but curvy with an arse. Just lost a decent chunk of weight so want to branch out a bit.

I take it that this winter I should be buying some ankle boots. Apart from these super expensive £400 one i hear talk of, which ones should i buy? How high does the heel need to be to look good? What do I wear them with?

I had some red or dead mountain ankle boots, but they look terrible on me and I think Ill flog them on eBay. I couldn't work out how to tuck in the bottom of my jeans. Do I need to buy specific jeans/trousers to fit into the top of ankle boots?

Does the mere mention of mum boot fear, mark me out as a mum booter?

New look and topshop good for ankle boots.

I like a super skinny jean to tuck into ankle boots personally.

Rassy · 28/08/2012 21:26

bump - I always get this wrong, so need some advice too!

IS NOT MUMSY

Bloody I pad

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 28/08/2012 21:43

I really like those Clarks ones but I hate black boots with blue jeans and black boots with black jeans just make me look like an aging Goth. I want those but in grey or dark green or burgundy or something.

And yes to v skinny jeans. I find that I look better in something that is a cross between Cybbo's link and a v short cowboy-esque shape without the cowboy trimmings - this way, it's slightly wider at the top if that makes sense.

PippiL · 28/08/2012 21:49

I like the idea of grey. Genius! Where do I find them?

I did put the red or dead on eBay as they just don't sit right with my current jeans. After the weight loss though I might be brave enough to wear some jeans or black trousers that are much darker and skinnier at the ankle.

I can't bear for the boots to be too tight at the top creating a calf hangover. That would be disastrous.

I wore them all last winter. Alone. ;)
With skinny jeans. My tip
Is to have the zips unzipped a little so the boot flops out. Too tucked in is a bit Lulu circa 1982

ImpossiblyGlossy · 28/08/2012 22:37

Boot opens a bit. Then
Jean flops onto

Well rests on boot/sock /foot.
I'll shut it now.

noddyholder · 28/08/2012 22:58

All stylish people wore them last year I looked at mine today ad only just saw te zip!

ImpossiblyGlossy · 29/08/2012 00:19

As well as trying to find the perfect grey handbag I've also been looking for grey boots. Sigh. Grey just doesn't seem to exist much. I so wished I like brown as the choice is endless.

cybbo · 29/08/2012 07:56

Lulu circa 1982 is my style icon!

MrsCampbellBlack · 29/08/2012 08:14

Joins cybbo in the lulu corner.

QuinnFabray · 29/08/2012 08:57

I'll be wearing mine with skirts and dresses and opaque tights.

NoComet · 29/08/2012 09:22

The problem is you need two pairs of ankle boots-
One you can get jeans in and one you can't.

Otherwise the pair you wear with tights flap about, rub and look stupid.

Unless you can get the holy grail of boots, the perfect lace up pair.

I'm 44, short with size 4 feet. Comfortable though DMs type boots are I need something smarter or I look like a clown.

BalloonSlayer · 29/08/2012 09:30

Can anyone link to a picture showing the correct way to wear skinny jeans and ankle boots? Please. I liked glossy's description but am too unconfident to try it just from that.

Also, I am looking for some straight-legged worky trousers. Can I war any boots with those and look good? I am so sick of bootcut black work trousers with mumboots.

Oh this thread is good, I keep hearing about ankle boots but am scared my 5' frame would look rediculous in them.

So I need some for with the skinnies and some for with tights and skirts then?

Could someone who is far more stylish than I am give comments on these for with tights and dresses and/or these for with skinnies (I own grey, black and dark green skinny jeans, my blue ones are no longer fitting and I think I'll get through the winter with 3 pairs of skinnies)

DontmindifIdo · 29/08/2012 09:57

For those looking for grey boots, what about these - although they are a bit 'Jimmy Nail'..

How did someone get deleted talking about boots Grin

BalloonSlayer · 29/08/2012 11:07

Nooo but you see everlong if you have skinny ankles you like me and are trying to wear skinny jeans and ankle boots, you can end up with the look of "I'm decorating and have just stepped into a bucket and it's stuck on my foot." I'd like to know whether there is a technique for avoiding this sartorial disaster.
