Ankle boots, what do I wear them with so they don't look like mum boots?

I'm 5'5" and size 12, but curvy with an arse. Just lost a decent chunk of weight so want to branch out a bit.

I take it that this winter I should be buying some ankle boots. Apart from these super expensive £400 one i hear talk of, which ones should i buy? How high does the heel need to be to look good? What do I wear them with?

I had some red or dead mountain ankle boots, but they look terrible on me and I think Ill flog them on eBay. I couldn't work out how to tuck in the bottom of my jeans. Do I need to buy specific jeans/trousers to fit into the top of ankle boots?

Does the mere mention of mum boot fear, mark me out as a mum booter?

They were adverts. Nothing scandalous I'm afraid.

Love your description Balloon. I have exactly the same issue.

noddyholder · 29/08/2012 11:26

I have skinniest ankles! I don't find any probs though if the boots are a good shape. I also wear turned up skinnies with pushed down 'nice' socks

noddyholder · 29/08/2012 11:29

this is how i wear mine if not rolled up

Am I the only one for whom ankle boots look totally shit? I am a size 12 but have the shortest legs known to man and big chunky calves (sexy!), and ankle boots just cut off my legs and make my calves look even fatter - sort of in the same way that gladiator sandals do. I have tried tucking them into skinny jeans as well but they still look awful.

Does anyone else have short fat legs and still manage to rock a pair of ankle boots, or are they only for the long slim legged among us?

IShallPracticeMyCurtsey · 29/08/2012 12:04

What about lovely beautiful Rachel Weisz for inspiration? Although she is flawless and slim, I find her style non-threatening in that it seems suitable for a normal, if polished, person.

IShallPracticeMyCurtsey · 29/08/2012 12:07

Actually, I think the pictures in the link above hold the key.
If you're worried about your legs being 'cut off' or appearing chunkier in ankle boots (a valid concern for all), a dark chunky scarf (if your boots are black or brown) really helps to balance out your top half, somehow. I don't know how this works, but it's a little visual trick that I often employ.

justasecond · 29/08/2012 12:29

Balloon - thats such a good way of putting it!
I too am skinny of leg and ankle with size 7 feet. I stopped wearing long boots with jeans ages ago, the look just did not suit me. I had 3 pairs of ankle boots last year. I think the trick is a bit of a heel but not a straight one an angled one like on the acne pistols is ideal. Also you need a tapered skinny jean not a srtaight one. Lastly boots that are sort of angled so the top is higher make your feet look smaller, like these bertie boots I actually really love these and might buy them.

Agree with noddys link
Not too
Tucked in

noddyholder · 29/08/2012 13:32

Agree don't fiddle about too much just put on your jeans and then boots and they somehow find their own shape

I was intrigued by the deleted posts! Disappointed it was adverts, I was hoping their was an ankle boot troll on the loose! Grin

QueenCadbury · 29/08/2012 13:48

I'd say my feet and ankles are of normal size but my legs are short compared to my body. I have trouble finding any ankle boots that don't make me look short and stumpy unless they have big heels but they're not practical on the school run. Maybe I should just stick to knee highs?

Anyone else short of leg?

PippiL · 29/08/2012 20:04

Yes, short in the leg here.

I think my issue is that I need to buy some skinnier jeans. My current ones are slim rather than skinny. So there is a bit too much material at the ankle.

Alsoif you are short legged there is too much excess at the bottom. I usually have to cut a bit off mine and turn up. (being short makes you proficient at sewing).

I braved a tunic today with leggings. It's amazing how eye opening losing weight is. I can wear much shorter skirts now Grin

I love noddy's advice. Today I bought these boots from Next www.next.co.uk/x502340s9 (which are perfectly adequate!) but am lusting after these from Boden www.boden.co.uk/en-GB/Womens-Shoes-Boots/Boots/AZ149/Womens-Effortless-Suede-Boots.html.......

PippiL · 29/08/2012 22:25

Aw, crap. What I want is these only in grey leather, not suede, and for about £80 max.

How about These grey boots? I think they're quite nice but then, I'm always being told I have no taste.

DontmindifIdo · 30/08/2012 15:05

OK, thoughts on these grey boots - not sure, but then they are reduced to £25....

PippiL · 30/08/2012 18:30

I quite liked the vegetarian grey boots at first, but on second glance I think I will go off them quickly. The bottom is just like to boots I'm flogging on eBay, and the top is too mum booty for me. A smidge too high in the ankle, and a smidge too tight.

The second grey pair, I like the bottom half, but not the top bit. However, £25 is not to be sniffed at.

Woo, hoo. I think this is my first ever post with messages removed.

civilfawlty · 30/08/2012 18:45

There are some nice grey boots on the Bertie link - called peppery i think. Just view all ankle boots and you'll spot em.

I liked the boots jools Oliver was wearing at the little bird launch. Not sure were they are from. Fash ed mate us on the case, and calling get pr so I'll be able to update.

Imlostwithoutahope · 30/08/2012 18:53

Im a bootcut wearer Blush I've ventured into skinnies and wear them with ballet pumps or knee high boots but I believe bootcuts are out. As I can't keep wearing knee highs come winter I need to get over my instinct which is telling me skinny and ankle boots look wrong and embrace it. I need more pictures to convince me normal people are wearing them and it isn't a look left only to those who put the wrong boots on as they rushed out.

It takes me ages to wear a new key trend, I have to see it everywhere before I get used to the look. Skinny jeans and leggings took me forever to get used too.

As I'm knew to this fashion I have these boots. Can they be worn with skinny jeans or am I way off the mark! I have a feeling they're too high. But I have no fashion sense www.clarks.co.uk/p/20341360
