Who exactly buys petite clothes?

bishboschone · 20/08/2012 09:18

I'm 5 ft and I have never purchased petite clothing . Yesterday I tried on short leg jeans ( not petite ) and went back for the medium leg as they felt too ankle flappy . I pretty much always wear flats too. I bought a petite coat once and when I put my arms up the sleeves went right up
My arm .. Sent it back for the normal .. Weird ..

Miniature ladies, I presume Smile

Smile... I don't know anyone shorter than me though.

I know a good few just-5-foot and 4-foot-somethign women, some are just short but a 'normal' build and some are, well, petite. Tiny bone structure, size 2 feet, that sort of thing...

MrsHelsBels74 · 20/08/2012 09:25

I do, I'm 5ft & sometimes still find petite things too long, depends where you get them from.

CharminglyOdd · 20/08/2012 09:26

I do (5'2") when it's available, mostly things like dresses where the position of the hemline matters (i.e. would look really stupid if too long) or trousers that I don't want to have to turn up - I don't know how so if I don't want to pay then I'll buy petite. I don't wear very high heels and have very short legs with a long upper body so medium can look like I'm a child wearing my big sister's clothes.

Pandsbear · 20/08/2012 09:29

I'm 5ft 3'' and for smart work wear (like suits when I needed them) the petite fit was much neater on me. Otherwise shoulders were in the wrong place (hanging down my arm)and sleeves were over my hands, buttons in wrong place etc even on the size 6 or 8 in normal fit. Trousers not so much of a problem.

Don't really bother now apart from jeans - if they are from Topshop the petite range fits me better but I can cope with hemming the other sizes if I need to.

BelleTheOlympicBeatnik · 20/08/2012 09:29

I need petite in certain types of clothes. Anything tailored - for example, I like wearing the cropped cigarette pants that HAVE to hit a certain point on your ankle to avoid looking like they spent too long in the tumble dryer.

I always check the petite section for skirts and dresses too (particularly when I was younger - I was a fan of the micro mini skirt! Blush). It doesn't look quite right when skirts are too long.

You're right about the jeans though. Medium leg every time. Grin I like my jeans to crumple up around the ankle.

Alurkatsoftplay · 20/08/2012 09:29

Petite people. Me! I am short of arm and leg and narrow of shoulder.
Naturally, it depends on the shop if they are any good. M and s used to be bad.
Top shop used to be good.

MorrisZapp · 20/08/2012 09:30

I'm five foot three and usually buy short fittings in trousers.

Never bothered with it for my top half.

3teenhell · 20/08/2012 09:31

Petite ranges are awful in some places. Jeans in next appear to just have shorter legs, but my abdimon (sp?) is shorter too so they look crap!

No longer bother with them at all

Piemistress · 20/08/2012 09:32

I do, normally from Next. I find the trouser length nearly spot on and the tops a bit more fitted.

charlottehere · 20/08/2012 09:33

I do, am 5ft. I need a petite coat or it just doesnt sit right. I find a lot of next stuff too long.

vvviola · 20/08/2012 09:35

I do. I'm 5'4 but have very short legs, so if I'm going to wear flat shoes with something I need the petite fit.

I used to buy petite shirts too as I am also very short of arm, but my long body meant that didn't always work, so I just buy 3/4 length sleeves now.

Hulababy · 20/08/2012 09:38

I'm 5 foot and have short legs - I have to buy petite for length, so def for trousers or long dresses/skirts. A normal length trouser/maxi are way too long!

tabulahrasa · 20/08/2012 09:40

I'd imagine it depends on your proportions, just like with tall clothes.

I'm 5 ft 8, with a 33 inside leg - I occasionally prefer long length trousers, but I don't need them.

I have a friend who is 6 ft and also has a 33 inside leg, regular length trousers leave her waistband too low, she also needs tall tops and dresses or they sit on her bust wrong and her sleeves don't sit right.

ceeveebee · 20/08/2012 09:46

I am 5ft 2 but have short legs and longer body (making myself sound so attractive here..). I can't wear trousers/jeans unless they are petite or gave been altered, they are about 4 inches too long! Tops, skirts, dresses and coats I just buy regular clothes though.
M&S trousers are very short though, on the rare occassion I find sonething nice in there I get medium.

Littlepumpkinpie · 20/08/2012 11:31

Even pettite trousers/jeans are to long for me M&S no longer do the range in town I asked why and the did not even know. Clothes shopping for me is Utter hell on earth for the lower half of my body. Shoes well yes I am a size two so thats another ball game. OK so I can buy online but even that is very hit and miss.

redrubyshoes · 20/08/2012 11:35

I do because it is not just the size that is reduced but accessories such as buttons are reduced in size too for perspective.

alemci · 20/08/2012 11:39

i sometimes used to buy Principles Petite trousers when they were a proper shop and made by someone else. It does depend on the fashion. I am 5' 41/2 but not long in leg but long waisted. they did sometimes become a bit ankle flappy as they ran up in the wash but seemed to fit on the crotch which is always a problem for me.

lissielou · 20/08/2012 11:43

I am 5ft1 but have long legs so need regular trews but petite tops. Shame, because next petite fits perfectly on the hips and waist.

Ephiny · 20/08/2012 11:44

I do for tailored stuff like suits and jackets (I'm 5'2").

For jeans etc I'd normally just get them taken up if necessary, and tend to choose low-waisted styles so the rise isn't too high for me.

GreenEyesAndHam · 20/08/2012 12:08

Me (5'2) for work dresses and coats mainly

MrsCampbellBlack · 20/08/2012 12:11

I don't much and am a fairly petite 5ft - agree the arm lengths can be just a smidge too short but perhaps we have gorilla arms bish?

J Crew do a good petite range though but you have to order from the US so is a bit of a pain if you're not totally sure on sizing.

With jeans - i tend to order normal ones and get them taken up. I get a lot of things altered.

LRDtheFeministDragon · 20/08/2012 12:17

I'm 5'4 ish but have long legs and a short little body, so it's a bugger finding jackets that look right, and occasionally petite ranges work better.
