For everyone who wants to harp on about their new purchases, enjoys links and some chat. Here is to new beginnings!

My mum used to be so into style (she had an amazing collection of vintage Ossie Clark and Calvin Klein), but has rather lost interest in the last few years. Not sure why really.

I've never been much of a perfume wearer, prefer some sort of zesty/lemon soap and body lotion and no extra smells added. Luckily new career encourages no scent, so I fit in well Grin

mintgreentiger · 29/08/2012 22:46

my mum used to live in asia so all her work and evening pieces are bespoke tailor pieces - gorgeous fabrics and they fit like a glove. am very Envy and sadly none fit me! she does have a black 2.55 I am allowed to borrow from time to time :)

ooh may look into some jbrand marias. Hate my post DD tum and pilates isn't working fast enough!

has anyone used Jo Malone eau de parfum? Some lovely scents but not sure about staying power

FritziGreenEyes · 30/08/2012 09:00

popcornia As much as I love DVF, I'm not sure about that coat. Confused Think it tries too many things that don't fit together IYSWIM. The result is not "ladylike punk" like they claim more a mish-mash gone a bit wrong. I think you can wear proper rock-chick biker jacket or boots at any age. The crucial thing is OR. Not all of it at the same time.

Mignonette so sorry to hear about your father. My parents had a bad car accident whilst travelling in France this year and the fear of losing them hit me like a truck - I definitely cherish them more as a result.
My father is not a particularly stylish man living in those camo waistcoats with a hundred pockets! His father however was a different story. He had his own dressing room, with bone handled shaving brushes and the like and wore spats and three piece suits with fob watches.
In terms of scents - agree totally about how evocative they are. When I bumped into my ex boyfriend this weekend he was still wearing the same aftershave he wore 8 years ago and it took me back!
Our bedroom is now finished! Two stressful days trying to build the wardrobes but we finally got there and I am pleased with the results. Dying to wear all my new purchases but trying not to wish the summer away.
Have wonderful days all.

FritziGreenEyes · 30/08/2012 09:30

Sorry to hear about all the sad stories of losing parents. Will make an effort to appreciate mine more Blush

Gigi sandals for £25 on Brand Alley today. None in my size unfortunately.

DonaAna · 30/08/2012 11:20

Lunch break of an extremely busy day.
Read 'You are what you wear' during my morning commute.
Chapter 3 "Somnambulist - when you are bored with your look" was a revelation - it talks about getting stuck in a style rut of safe choices and how to revive your wardrobe.
(I've been trying to do that over the past year or two - but she suggested things I have not considered / discovered yet.)
So energizing and empowering ;)

Had a long talk with my father last night. I'm a daddy's girl and it's sad to see how he keeps turning grayer and older every time I visit him. But love talking with him. Nowadays I always have this nagging fear that our time together is limited, this may be the last chance Sad.

Sorry no time for more commenting or link-clicking... BBL.

dona I downloaded that book on my Kindle and reading it whenever "Call the Midwife" gets too tough for me Smile. Have loved all your book recommendations so far.

hopefully Happy shopping at IKEA! Make sure to throw in some tea lights and napkins, it's obligatory. Grin

every I bought Lovely by SJP when it was launched in the US seven years ago. I was pregnant at the time and thought it smelled heavenly. Couldn't stand the smell a few weeks later and threw it out.

I love Fico di Amalfi by Aqua di Parma for summer, Iperborea by Lorenzo Villoresi for winter, Grand Amour by A. Goutal and L'air rien by Miller Harris for nights out.

And I keep a bottle of Clarins Eau Dynamisante in the car. It's obviously not very popular here as I get lots of compliments and people ask where it is from.

Fritzi truly lovely perfumes and so happy to share books Grin - there will be more when I go back to Italy and get my leisure time back.

Quick tea break. Love the men at work (just got a box of chocolates from one - am touched). Good male company, that's what was missing from my SAHM life.

Outfit of the day: D&G jacket (love the heft of chain detailing), MiH skinnies, MJ chambray tee, Colombian leather belt, pseudo Acne boots. Craving Chanel Antaeus EdT to complete the outfit Grin.

mignonette · 30/08/2012 13:20

Lovely posts about parents....

When I read the Perfume Guide I recall being surprised at how much they praised the first 'Juicy Couture' perfume. I have yet to smell it but it just goes to show you do not have to shell out the big bucks.

This site is interesting -

boisdejasmin.com/2005/06/narcisse_noir_e.html

Fritzi...re Eau Dynamisante..Where is 'here'? I imagine you aren't referring to France where all my Father's friends houses had a bottle of the scented shower gel.

I haven't tried Jo Malone although I have always loved the scent of roses and she has a lovely sounding version. I grow plenty of roses in my garden for that reason.

I'm looking for a good Oriental scent. I have dry skin like my mother and daughter and for some reason, heavy Oriental scents smell best on our skins. I do not suit 'green' scents but I have never grown out of anything scented with vanilla, gardenia, musk or coconut.
Years ago a friend brought me a bottle of CK1 from NYC before it was released over here and everyone raved about it although I'm sure I am not unusual in always 'sharing' my man's scents. Now I never wear it as it feels too 'young'. I don't know why. I also find that 'Aqua Di Gio' which I loved once, seems less appropriate.

I have always preferred the dark, complex scents like Tuberose. I have worn Fracas and Shocking but it seemed at one point, after that Vogue article a few years back where two writers debated the merits of 'light' versus 'dark' scents, that the whole of London femalehood was wearing them! I'd get into cabs and there'd be this trail of scent.......

I'm curious to try Caron's 'Tabac Blond'. Has anybody used it? A dear friend of mine in her 70's confided that she used to date a member of the perfume family who made it which made me swoon at the thought of all those lovely glass bottles she described him giving her. She said the colour and consistency of perfume used to be richer, more evocative. Maybe it was because more essential oils were used rather than chemically synthesised versions?

Here is my suggestion for a Christmas gift for a man -

www.artisanparfumeur.com/shop/perfumes/woody/m-chant-loup-eau-de-toilette-1019194.html

I'd also like to try L'Artisan Parfumeur's new perfume 'Batucada' and also 'Mandarine'. Has anybody tried them?

I had a sniff of that Lady GaGa perfume- I am saying nothing.....Grin. I must admit as a keen horticulturist who used to have her own garden design business in the 80's, some perfumes state they contain scents from plants and flowers that I know do not really have scents....Or they smell vile like Dahlia flowers/stems when you tear them. I always imagine Dahlia's smell like an ant would taste (tad bizarre comparison, I know). Yet the Givenchy 'Black Dahlia' is not bad at all.

This is the most unusual way to scent your home/office -

shop.lessenteurs.com/category/1905/Rubber_Incense

I have a little bottle of Narcisse Noir by Caron which I bought after trying a sample from Les Senteurs

shop.lessenteurs.com/category/1001/Fragrance

and having been tempted into it by writing this post, I've ordered three more samples - Secret Oud by Caron, Felanilla 21 by Parfumerie Generale and Ombre Platine by Jean Charles Brosseau. Being parfum and edp, samples give quite a few days of scent although they are £5 each. However, some of the perfumes are £200 plus a bottle, so it's the only way to avoid a very costly miss choice. All Orientals I am afraid. I was tempted by an 'Aquatic' called Sel Marin' by Heeley and also 'Feminite Du Bois' and 'Orchidee Chocolat' by Mizensir. I really need to take more perfume risks!

Apologies for very long post....

pickledsiblings · 30/08/2012 15:39

Mignonette, apparently ants taste salty, according to DD anyway Grin.

Hopefully, we are off to Ikea tomorrow. I must remember to pick up some tea lights, thanks for reminding me Fritzi. Any other must have Ikea purchases?

Popcornia, if you get the outfit right you're more than half way there. Congrats on getting through and good luck for the next round.

MarshaBrady · 30/08/2012 16:30

Well done Popcornia and good luck for the next round!

I like these scent posts. Sadly I can't really contribute. I still have a very old Issey Miyake one lingering in the bathroom cabinet.

mignonette · 30/08/2012 17:04

PickledSiblings

Earlier on in the thread I posted a link to the Ikea chair I purchased.

Good luck Popcorn. Appearance counts a lot. Plenty of employment research states this so continue to think about your outfit as it can help with any nerves too. What are you thinking of wearing? Do you have to do a presentation? I don't mind them so much.

Good shoes, good bag, a little make up, big smile. That's what they say works.

DonaAna · 30/08/2012 17:54

Still at work Pop but I wear red in interviews.
Mig I'm a big fan of orientals (love Guerlain exclusives) and Carons. Campomarzio in Rome is perfume heaven.
Still one more meeting to go to...

Hopefully · 30/08/2012 17:57

Popcornia Well done! If the outfit is right, everything else will magically fall into place Grin. What are you planning to wear?

I envy you mignonette - I bloody hate doing presentations. I talk incredibly fast at the best of times, but when I am in front of a crowd of people my voice goes into overdrive. Have never really had to practise though, and will get lots of chances to in new business, so I imagine I'll improve a bit...

I failed on the tea light front in Ikea, but did manage napkins, you'll be pleased to hear Fritzi. Also bought drawers for newly assembled Pax wardrobe (my god, I have never had so much wardrobe space), hand towels and other fascinating things...

In other news, I have just used the M&Em discount code DRESS15 (I think that's what it was? I'll double check if that doesn't work for anyone) for 15% off. I have bought the ruched v neck dress in plum with the intention of dying it dark brown if it looks good. I may have also slightly bought two of the cowl necked ruched dress to add to the two I already own. In my defence, I am planning on eBaying the navy one if either of the new ones is a perfect colour. It's a Small, if anyone here is interested - I've only worn it a couple of times because my other one is a better colour on me. Or I might overdye the navy to make it more petrol. Either way, I am currently wearing my dark olive one to death, so I clearly need another one.

I am going to order some Hush stuff later too.

I weighed myself this morning Shock. Four weeks of unhealthy eating has so taken its toll. Can't wait to get back to exercise! Sunday marks Day 1 of Insanity (again). Hurrah!

In other other news, I am interviewing nannies tomorrow. What the bloody hell do I ask them?!?!

mignonette · 30/08/2012 18:22

Thanks for that code Hopefully. It's new basic T shirt time. Has anybody seen the new 'Rosie' lingerie line? What do you think of it?

I never wear padded bra's and it's getting harder and harder to find unpadded. I prefer the shape and line. any suggestions? I like dainty but also used to love Gossard 'Glossies' range which are hard to find now.

MarshaBrady · 30/08/2012 18:37

Mignon I really like Bodas and never wear padded either. Or recently Rigby & Peller and it was great, although an expensive habit.

Hopefully lovely to see your posts again. Sure you'll be back in good form with exercising in no time.

Pop it's a great idea to lead with the outfit. Feel good and confident in what you are wearing and usually the interview gets off to a good start.

AmberNectarine · 30/08/2012 18:39

hopefully if you do decide to get rid of your navy, please let me know... I fancy the v neck one in purple for work. Might make use of the code, thanks!

Went charity shopping today. Items I saw included a black DVF wrap dress, a Hugo Boss pencil skirt and Chanel heeled brogues (for £20). Obviously none of these items were my size, but I did get a lovely LKB silver grey cap sleeved top with a sweetheart neckline, brand new for £12. Will be very useful for work.

In other news my T by AW blazer arrived and is excellent, probably my favourite Outnet buy to date. Will get a lot of wear out of it, and it will replace the shabby looking Topshop one I have only had for a couple of months.

Hopefully · 30/08/2012 18:40

Haven't come across Rosie. Have you got a link? I like Tango by Panache for non-padded, and Lejaby nuage (not padded, but shaped foam iykwim) for smooth lines.

Hush basket is filling rapidly...

AmberNectarine · 30/08/2012 18:41

I cannot wait to burn my f*ing nursing bras.

Hopefully · 30/08/2012 18:42

Thanks Marsha! I've missed being here for the past week or so while we've packed up the house.

Amber will definitely let you know Smile. I suspect one of the new colours will be better than the navy for me, so I am anticipating getting rid of it. Must keep an eye out on The Outnet a bit more. Have a few things (like another blazer, biker jacket, long line t-shirts and leather trousers) that are on my long term list and I will snap up if I see cheaply.

MarshaBrady · 30/08/2012 18:43

Oh can you link again to the T by Wang Amber? I've forgotten what it looks like, sounds really good.

I don't blame you re nursing bras I felt exactly the same. ggr Your charity shops are ace btw
