For everyone who wants to harp on about their new purchases, enjoys links and some chat. Here is to new beginnings!

OP posts:

Hi all. Glad to see normal service has resumed! Have been away with DD (if you recall DH in Afghanistan). Went to London and saw Matilda (brilliant) and down to Devon to see family. Purchases along the way include Whistles Animal Skinnies (great fit) and the blue flock animal print skinnies from Zara that I think Amber has (Zara website down at mo so can't link).

Am now on the search for a stylish coat with a hood (if not a contradiction in terms)! Just wondered if anyone had seen one? I remember Mrs CB's Whistles one earlier in the 'summer' - maybe something like that or what do you think of this www.seasaltcornwall.co.uk/women/clothing/jackets_outerwear/topknot_mac_squid_ink.htm

Portia4 · 29/08/2012 10:48

Yummy what a great haul, I particularly love your knitwear choices.

Fab skirt Amber unfortunateley I dont have the lifestyle to match it!

I'm going to try those jeans on this weekend Bloss, I really like them as an alternative to leather.

So far the weather is nice today, so I'm wearing Ralph Lauren white chinos, coral Massimo Dutti silk top and coral Zara blazer.

doghouse · 29/08/2012 11:06

Ooh, these look nice OTKs

What does anyone think?

notyummy · 29/08/2012 11:35

Wow - what a haul Yummy. Looks gorgeous.

Have ordered and returned Oasis coated skinnies for the crime of being too plastic-y looking. I prefer a more matt looking finish. I do like the slight edginess of coated skinnies, and has been noted on here before, the right pair can be 'spanx for the legs'! They need the right mix of denim and elastane for that. The cut and rise of the Oasis skinnies was good though - I haven't bought trousers from Oasis for ages but in the past have noted that they cut quite well for the pears amongst us. The size 10 was perfect, but it was not to be. If anyone sees any black or indigo mattish coated skinnies for under £100 then let me know please!

Good to see you back Doghouse - I face the same challenge as you/your DH in the next year. I have also heard Matilda is great, and DH loves Tim Minchim, so we really must try and see it the next time we are in London.

HoopDePoop · 29/08/2012 11:40

Delurking to ask a quick question - those of you who order from Shopbop, do you pay the customs deposit or pay when item arrives?

I bought a bag from them and paid in advance as I was having it delivered to work and didn't fancy reception having to pay the charges to the courier! But apparently often they don't charge, a gamble worth taking? Prices not quite so good once proper UK tax applied.

Yummymummyyobe1 · 29/08/2012 12:02

Portia4 thanks I'm going to buy a few more of the jumpers before we get colder and wetter.

notyummy thank you. I do love clothes and shoes although I'm spending far too much on DS1 with him being our PFB and am loosing the will to shop for myself.

MarshaBrady · 29/08/2012 13:14

I pay in advance too Hoop. But didn't know that they sometimes don't charge.

Hi Doghouse not sure on the boots is the answer! Maybe worth a try?

Is anyone a size 40, UK7 what do you get in US? US9.5 or 10?

Decameron · 29/08/2012 13:23

I've never got away with not paying customs, except once when I had a package sent to work and the mailroom staff paid the charge, I think! My friend goes back to the US regularly so she's my courier. Grin

Marsha, usually 9.5 though it can depend on the brand.

Decameron · 29/08/2012 13:24

I like the jacket, Doghouse. Not sure about the boots. I would wreck suede in a week.

MarshaBrady · 29/08/2012 13:49

Yes like the jacket too Doghouse

Yes suede is a pain. I ruined some KG suede knee boots by opening some tuna when tipsy after a night out and a few drops of oil, couldn't get it out.

Thanks Decam think I will go with the 9.5. Loafer type things, bit out there for me will link when I get them. Have an urge to check them out, might not be good.

AmberNectarine · 29/08/2012 15:42

Bloody cobbler had gone on holiday and my Louboutins needed resoling! Had to walk a mile in the rain with the DC to Timpson at the nearest Tesco. The young guy behind the counter looked a bit panicked when he saw them and asked for extra time so he could get it right. Bless him.

Right, let's canvass some opinions, I have a wedding on Friday and can't decide on an outfit. So should I wear:

Option 1: grey Isabella Oliver drape front dress, rose gold R&B round toe courts and sparkly pink Anya Hindmarch clutch; or

Option 2: midnight blue leopard print LKB wrap dress, aforementioned hot pink pointy Louboutin courts and sparkly pink Anya.

I have no full length mirror atm, so am fumbling around blindly!

MarshaBrady · 29/08/2012 15:48

Hmmm, close. Very close. Both are very nice. But am going for option 1. IO dress.

mignonette · 29/08/2012 15:53

Pleasantly surprised by the new Givenchy scent - Black Dahlia. I remain bemused by it's name considering that the smell emitted from dahlia flowers, stems and leaves is pretty foul and their propensity for earwig infestation.

I normally shy away from mainstream perfume launches because there are so many that appear to be 'formulated-by-committee' and very samey. Thousands of new scents are pumped out every year and it is hard to find something different. In addition, too many people wearing them.

This Perfume guide is invaluable and an interesting read -

www.amazon.co.uk/Perfumes-Guide-Luca-Turin/dp/0670018651/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1346251151&sr=1-1

It names some unusual choices, many not too £££ so readers won't find themselves yearning over some high end elixir made from the tears of unicorns or other rarity and only available in central London shops.

I have always worn 'Angel' buying it from it's release and it's only in France that I find myself smelling it on hordes of people. I also love 'Mandrigore' by Annick Goutal, Marc Jacob's 'Cucumber', the Comme Des Garcons range, Guerlain's 'L'Heure Bleu' and 'Vol De Nuit' and the 'Mure Et Musc' and 'Mechant Loup' from L'Artisan Parfumeur.

I steal DH's 'Extract Of West Indian Limes' by G. E Trumpers and his Givenchy 'Pi' cologne which warms beautifully on the skin of every female I've sprayed it on. I am often asked what I'm wearing when I borrow this.

I mix scents too -does anybody else do this? I buy cheap drugstore Musk scent from the USA by Bonnie Bell and mix it with other Orientals. I mix 'Eau Jeune's 'Eau Fraiche from French supermarkets and pharmacies with Lancome's 'O De Lancome'. I also like this Black Pepper EDT I buy in Sardinia for a couple of Euro's.
The original 'O' De Lancome is timeless but I did like the limited Summer versions, 'Azure' smelled best on my skin.

My Mother used to have an amazing wardrobe of scents because we travelled and lived all over the world; all classic scents like 'Diorissimo' and the Chanels so from a young age my sister and I absorbed the message that you start to dress with the application of scent.

What Winter scents are you all liking?

AmberNectarine · 29/08/2012 15:54

I'm leaning towards grey too Marsha for the very silly reason that my Vanessa Bruno tote (because let's face it, I will not fit the needs of a 14mo and a 2.8yr old in a teeny clutch) is grey wih silver sequins! However I do have a navy Longchamp I could use if I opted for the midnight. Serious decisions, eh?

Dona I meant to say I saw your SixtySeven boots yesterday and really liked them!

AmberNectarine · 29/08/2012 15:58

I have been v unimaginative lately and have been wearing Coco Mmselle as it reminds me of early days of dating DH.

mignonette · 29/08/2012 16:04

Amber I had a nightmare at my Father's funeral a couple of weeks ago. I wore a pair of Marni black heels overlaid with crochet pattern. I also took a pair of 'Pigalle' Louboutins because they were what I really wanted to wear but I worried they were not appropriate for a formal church funeral. The Marni heel snapped and DH did emergency repair with superglue only for it to ooze out staining the shoe white. Glue oozing all over the crochet where the heel joins the upper. My cobbler is going to try to dye them back to black for me. It was the first time I had worn them too.

So I wore the CL's not knowing we had a half mile walk to the church. By half way I was walking in my stockinged feet carrying the shoes thereby drawing totally unwanted attention to myself (or so I worried). I have never felt so much 'Mary Magdalene' in a church in those red soles. And trying to avoid stepping onto the metal grid running down the aisle too....

MarshaBrady · 29/08/2012 16:04

The very best kind of decisions Amber! Yes go with the tote too.

Mignonette lovely post on scent. Especially that it is linked to travel. I don't do much scent but feel the same way about being free, especially being free in a city. So I would put as much importance on the days off from everyone to do what I like. Not sure if that makes sense, but I like your sentiment!

TellMeLater · 29/08/2012 16:11

hoop I'd pay in advance - the royal mail charges an admin fee of something ridiculous like £20 to collect the customs tax.

mignonette · 29/08/2012 16:44

I love Coco and all it's variations. No5, No19 and 'Crystalle' do not suit me. I once bought a bottle of the Gardenia scent from the London store. That was nice but the best single note floral scent I have bought recently is the Prada 'Tuberose'. That is delicious. But it is intoxicatingly heady according to DH who reacts badly ENT wise to many perfumes. I only wear it when I am not out with him or am outside.

Here is a mixture of pieces I have already bought and the rest on my wish list- Sorry if it's a bit long.....

trixymalixy · 29/08/2012 18:29

hoop when I ordered boots from the US I paid the customs deposit and it was refunded as there was no customs charge, that was a pleasant surprise as in my head the cost was including the deposit.

trixymalixy · 29/08/2012 18:30

Lots of lovely links for my train journey, thanks mignonette

mignonette · 29/08/2012 19:26

I would like to apologise to you all for my bitchy initial posts. I am ashamed of what I wrote because I am usually not spiteful like that....... Blush.

I have no excuse other than the recent death of my Father. His untimely and swift death (due to GP negligence) has left me with great anger which I am struggling to keep directed towards the appropriate people. I'm really liking this thread and hope that you will all accept my apology.

MarshaBrady · 29/08/2012 19:29

Of course Mignonette don't worry at all.

But I'm very sorry to hear about your father. Really, do stay and I'm looking forward to looking at your links later on! It's nice to have you here.

AmberNectarine · 29/08/2012 19:33

mignonette very sorry to hear of your father's passing. How awful for you and your family. We are a very supportive bunch here, and don't just talk clothes, so feel free to unload if it would help. Alternatively, keep it light if you need a distraction. Don't worry about the start of the thread, you're welcome here.

mintgreentiger · 29/08/2012 19:43

evening all. Really sorry to hear about your father mignonette Sad

we're back from weekend away and DD seemed to have a great time without us. I coped marginally less well but was lovely to have some away time and have lots of yummy prosecco without feeling guilty! Whilst away I bought some rather unstylish fit flop ankle sheepskin- lined ankle boots - 60% off and the most comfortable boots I've ever tried on, is that an excuse?

IO dress and rose gold courts sounds just lovely, amber.

Day off work today and slobbed around in teal skinnies, long line black cami, cobalt slouchy IO t, nude mini gracie and ancient gold flats. Then it tipped it down and I had to cover up with an emergency tatty jumper of DH's we keep in the car for Sudden Weather Inclemency. Style fail...
