For everyone who wants to harp on about their new purchases, enjoys links and some chat. Here is to new beginnings!

Oh my goodness. I'm almost scared to come back here after the last few days. I have always loved and followed A&W but as a casual dipper in and links follower, not in a stalker-ish fashion. I have always been a conscious lurker precisely because I cherish my anonymity and prefer to watch from afar. I live abroad, don't know anyone from MN in real life - and like it just that way!
I really do hope A & W will find a way to continue - you are providing such a valuable service :)

FritziGreenEyes · 18/08/2012 11:04

dona So sorry to hear about DD2 being distressed. I'm also intrigued by what happened under the stars Wink

pickled I'm also in holiday outfit this morning: Seafolly bikini and grey cotton embroidered tunic as cover up. DD is in cotton shorts, no top and wearing a braided headband, hippy-style Grin. Love your outfit but thought for a moment you are wearing strappy sandals in your garden!

I also agree with trying to buy less good-quality stuff than lots of cheapo clothes that get thrown out after a few wears. (Can you tell I read the Overdressed book too). Couldn't engage in a discussion yesterday though...

Yes good point Fritzi I couldn't think properly yesterday and couldn't deal with that stuff.

Designers have responded a bit by doing cheaper lines. Preen etc they have much much cheaper stuff at Debenhams and Preen Line. So it is there if people want it. It's all about mindset. Does a person feel pleased some one thinks their copy is an original or do they value the design itself. Either way isn't bad btw I'm not saying it is at all but it would be interesting to look at how shoppers think.

NanAstley · 18/08/2012 11:43

Marsha I agree it's about mindset. I try to steer clear of things that are very obvious knock-offs as I find that disrespectful of the original designer. For example I once saw a dead ringer copy of a Bayswater in River Island...right down to the postman's lock (obviously it wasn't leather and the workmanship was dodgy but otherwise was exactly a copy).

I think Zara, Topshop etc tread a fine line, making interpretations of designer wear, but not exact copies. I have seen Victoria Beckham's cat dress in quite a few high street shops, but inspired-by pieces, not exact copies.

MarshaBrady · 18/08/2012 11:49

Zara, Reiss do a lot of their own stuff I think. I don't mind the high st doing what they do. Most people don't think about it and just buy stuff they like and of course that's fine. Reminds me of that great cerulean blue Meryl Streep bit in TDWP.

trixymalixy · 18/08/2012 11:53

I think quite a lot of people don't realise what they are buying is a rip off. I bet if you stopped everyone with a skull print scarf very few could tell you that the original was Alexander McQueen.

I try to avoid obvious rip offs, but tbh I probably wouldn't recognise all of them either.

I do have a bit of a thing for Roland Mouret inspired dresses though...

noddyholder · 18/08/2012 11:55

I have a mcqueen scarf dp bought it for me never seen a fakey one though yet!

MrsRyanLochte · 18/08/2012 11:59

Marsha I think that is one of my favourite film moments ever.

MarshaBrady · 18/08/2012 12:07

Me too so serene and icy, wonderfully done. She's so good in that.

AntPants1 · 18/08/2012 12:10

Nervously dips toe......

MarshaBrady · 18/08/2012 12:12

Pulls up chair for lovely Ants. It's ok now I think.

blossoming · 18/08/2012 12:35

ants, I had no idea the extent of your loss. I'm so sorry.
Also how wonderful to see you back at a crucial time nan and hf. Have a great holiday hf.

AmberNectarine · 18/08/2012 12:43

I love Meryl, she is my favourite actress.

As you all know, I am designer junkie, and appreciate good design. I also don't like rip offs and copies, and I wouldn't chose them for myself, but I can't abide sneering at people who buy from Primark etc. out of necessity. Yes you can get some great bargains on eBay, I frequently do myself, but it takes time and energy that not everybody has. I don't pretend to know what it is like to live hand to mouth on a very low income, because I don't, but I imagine it must be very hard, and if someone wants to feel better about themself by tapping into a trend with a £4 Primark top, then good luck to them. As I said, it is up to the designers to police copyright. I also seem to remember Dona saying that some brands don't mind a bit of plaigarism as it creates more awareness of the brand overall, maybe I am inventing that?

Either way, I agree with the sentiment that original design is very important to the fashion industry, but the militant way it was put across on this thread yesterday really narked me.

Anyway, enough. Peace, love and harmony.

MarshaBrady · 18/08/2012 12:49

No I totally agree Amber. I am interested in the same thing. I think it is probably good for designer brands. Not bad which is why it doesn't bother me.

I know yesterday was annoying and I'm sorry I couldn't join in I'd had too little sleep and couldn't bear getting involved. I really really don't think there is anything wrong with buying whatever.

rufus101 · 18/08/2012 12:58

I really wanted the VL bikini Amber from NAP in the sale, but was going on hols and didn't want to risk missing the delivery.
Glad to see lots of posting today from the usual suspects and some newbies.
I took delivery of a really lovely Milly skirt from Cocosa this week. 1/3 of original price or less and it is beautifully cut. Can't link but will attempt to find google pic later. (how do people do that btw?) It's above knee, slight A-line, and cobalt blue with geometric print dark brown design. I love it so much that I want to find the matching jacket! ( that they showed in the Cocosa pic but weren't selling) I'm sure the colour purists will be thinking brown for winter? Quelle horreur! But the cobalt blue far out weighs it and it really zings.
Anyway enough nattering. I'm supposed to be working actually!

AntPants1 · 18/08/2012 13:12

Gosh it's hot. Hair a kinky mess. I think I probably need a cut. It's got to that stage where it's all fluffy!!

Planning a quick trip to Westfield today to take back LK Bennett blouse that was horrific on me. Colour all wrong. I looked like I needed to be buried! I really really must resist making other purchases once I get £95 back in my hands!

marsha and amber totally agree with your comments re copy's on the high street. Clearly I'd love to be head to toe DVF, Vivienne, et al but unless I win the lottery there is always going to be lots of things in my wardrobe which reference or pay homage to cat walk creations.

BTW my favourite buys this season are:

Whistles animal print skinnies
FCUK Renoir top
Mini Gracie
mint velvet leather jacket
Top shop Ponte Boyfriend blazer
Yellow clarkes t bar shoes

For A/W I am on the look out for some more tops- day and going out. I really do need to expand my repertoire away from brettons- although I do love them!

Oh and non style news...have had kitchen wall painted a lovely fresh line green (farrow and ball). I love it!

pickledsiblings · 18/08/2012 13:31

I have to say that when too many copies of an item, clothing or furniture abound it rather puts me of it. It's the ubiquitousness I guess, real or imagined - fickle, I know.

trixy, we live in a Victorian house and we have a real mix of furniture. For us what works is traditional sofas and curtains in neutral colours, oak floors (so again fairly trad) and then pieces of furniture from whatever decade/origin accessorised in a way that brings the trad and the modern together (could be something simple like a fruit bowl or a lamp).

The weather here is divine, hope it's the same for the rest of you Smile.

StrikeAPose · 18/08/2012 13:42

ants that's pretty much the clothes I have in rl or on my wishlist! I'm also trying to move away from bretons, but failing.

Went shopping today - a big h&m haul for dd, but nothing for me. Being pregnant is good for the bank balance if not for the glamour Grin.

What do you think about Uggs! I know they're a bit ridiculous, but imagine they'll be super practical this AW. Dd will be 21mo when her sibling arrives, so I reckon there'll be lots of wintery walks in the pissing rain.

pickledsiblings · 18/08/2012 14:52

Just the day for a link to a winter coat I think Grin, this Zara parka could work for me as it looks fairly short and has simple easily shortened sleeves - good for small frys I think.

dexter73 · 18/08/2012 15:08

StrikeAPose - I think these boots would be much better than Uggs as they are waterproof, warm and have a good sole.

dexter73 · 18/08/2012 15:48

I wouldn't know if things were a copy of a designer item because I don't look at their stuff or read magazines that have it in. I imagine most things on the high street have filtered down from the designer ranges.

AmberNectarine · 18/08/2012 16:03

I've got Uggs SaP shhh, mainly for round the house/park, but they are so flipping comfy!

NanAstley · 18/08/2012 16:37

I like Uggs as they are comfy but they aren'#t very useful in the rain/snow. I treated mine with waterproof spray, but they still have patch marks from the rain which makes them look slightly tatty Sad

I have heard very good things about Celtic Sheepskin. Their sheepskin lined boots are supposedly very good. AND they are made in Britain (which you can't say about a lot of stuff these days). They're on my Christmas wish list Smile

cheesesarnie · 18/08/2012 17:29

I like Uggs on other people but on me they look awful. I'm more of a brogue wearer.

very jealous of all of you with lovely summer weather. It's muggy here but drizzly! just the right sort of weather to make your make up slide down your face.

Hopefully · 18/08/2012 17:57

I used to have a pair of cow skin (as in, brown an white) ugg-alikes from Toast. They were, with hindsight, fairly foul, but fab quality and lasted for ages.

I am sat in my new house waiting for DH to arrive with removal van. Have been killing time in Lakeland and appear to have accidentally purchased 10 foil tray bake dishes, a pack of freezer bags for soup and a padded bag for washing delicates. I should never be allowed in there unaccompanied Grin
