Do you/should you stick to the rule of tight bottoms/loose top; loose bottoms/tight top?

I always have so I don't either look a) tarty or b) like I'm wearing a sack.

If I'm being unclear, I mean if you wear tight jeans for example, you then wear a loose top to counteract, and if you wear a big floaty skirt, you wear a tight top....

I've been really strict with myself lately exercise-wise and am more toned up than I have been in years, and a few times I've 'caught myself' wearing tight stuff all over. Am I walking round looking slutty without realising it? Is it ever ok? Style gurus please advise Smile

I dont think its slutty but it doesnt look very stylish. Unless you are at the gym or exercising. Just my opinion

thriftychic · 20/06/2012 11:34

so , skinny jeans and a fitted shirt or tee is wrong / slutty ??

badtasteflump · 20/06/2012 11:36

Well so I've heard - but I look in the mirror and think I look fine - am I a slut deluded?

I think skinny jeans is the exception if you can carry them off well.

docket · 20/06/2012 11:37

I don't think it looks slutty. I mean, it CAN look slutty but doesn't have to.

ceeveebee · 20/06/2012 11:38

I think if you've got a toned body then fitted tips look nice with skinny jeans or skirts. Don't like loose with loose though.

badtasteflump · 20/06/2012 11:40

I do wear not tight but not loose skirts with tight tops as well (straight pencil skirt type ones). Is that a no no?

I would never do cleavage and legs at the same time.

Didn't realise there was a rule.

Tight bottoms and tight top can look classy or slutty depending solely on the choice of garment.

With loose top and bottom you very much risk looking like a balloon animal.

Pinot · 20/06/2012 11:54

Actually, I would say tight/tight, loose/tight and tight/loose are all OK. I don't ever like loose/loose.

MadAboutHotChoc · 20/06/2012 12:03

If I am wearing skinny jeans and a tight top, I tend to wear a scarf as well.

I hate baggy top/baggy trousers/skirt and I think you can wear tight top/bottoms if you can get away with it.

Calamansi · 20/06/2012 12:10

Depends on How good your figure is Wink

Callisto · 20/06/2012 12:16

I wear tight jeans and a fitted (joules style) shirt quite often. Had no idea it could be considered slutty. Confused

badtasteflump · 20/06/2012 12:18

fitted isn't tight though is it? Unless the buttons are popping Grin

mumeuro · 20/06/2012 12:20

sounds like a good rule, I hadn't heard it before...

Nagoo · 20/06/2012 12:23

I never heard the rule and don't stick to it.

I shall use this opportunity though to tell you about the woman I saw last week getting into her car wearing footless tights and black pants and a tshirt.

She went to take her DC to school like it.

I was agog. I still lie awake and I can't forgive myself for not screaming 'Nooooo!' and throwing myself in front of the car.

SPsFanjoHarboursDeadCats · 20/06/2012 12:28

I've of clevage out then legs away and the other way round.

My daily outfit consists of skinny jeans and vest tops. Is that slutty now?

SPsFanjoHarboursDeadCats · 20/06/2012 12:29

I've heard of*

badtasteflump · 20/06/2012 12:31

I think it only looks 'cheap' (trying not to keep saying 'slutty') if the vest top is skin tight....

AgeingFop · 20/06/2012 12:32

I've heard of the legs-or-cleavage-but-not-both rule and that makes sense. But can't see that a tight-ish top with skinny jeans is tarty. Or indeed a body-con dress with tights/leggings.

But I'm male so probably like a bit of sluttiness what do I know?

iknowwho · 20/06/2012 12:34

Just look in a mirror and make a judgement call on the outfit.

AmberNectarine · 20/06/2012 12:36

I think it's a lot less to do with looking slutty than body shape. If skinnies give you muffin top, probably best to avoid a super tight top. Unless you are rail thin and doing an ethereal look probably best to avoid loose all over as it will add volume, which most of us could do without. Skintight all over is generally in poor taste, but a fitted outfit can look very chic. As with most outfits, common sense and a full length mirror should be utilised.

Jenski · 20/06/2012 12:37

It depends on the shoes imo

badtasteflump · 20/06/2012 12:41

Jenski do you mean eg skinny jeans & a tight Tee look ok with flats but not with heels? I see that.
