Do you/should you stick to the rule of tight bottoms/loose top; loose bottoms/tight top?

I always have so I don't either look a) tarty or b) like I'm wearing a sack.

If I'm being unclear, I mean if you wear tight jeans for example, you then wear a loose top to counteract, and if you wear a big floaty skirt, you wear a tight top....

I've been really strict with myself lately exercise-wise and am more toned up than I have been in years, and a few times I've 'caught myself' wearing tight stuff all over. Am I walking round looking slutty without realising it? Is it ever ok? Style gurus please advise Smile

I wear two vest tops at a time. A tight one under to suck me in and a baggyish one over the top

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 20/06/2012 12:52

I must be really old because I thought it was a norm.

Tight trousers/skirt + loose top or vice versa

I also adhere to:

made up eyes+ neutral lips or neutral eyes + high colour lips

Handbag + bag either black+black or brown+brown.

Big blingy necklace + small stud earrings

AmberNectarine · 20/06/2012 12:58

Basically you can put on skinnies and a vest and look like this or this, two very different interpretations of airport chic...

mampam · 20/06/2012 13:07

I don't actually think that Katie Price looks that bad in what she is wearing it's just her giant tits that look ridiculous on her petite frame. Just my opinion.

FrancesFarmer · 20/06/2012 13:10

I mostly do fitted and fitted.

I think skinny jeans with a tight-fitting top are fine as long as they fit properly.

badtasteflump · 20/06/2012 13:17

Me too - putting her boobs to one side Confused, the clothes are fine IMO.

If either women were bigger all over, that would be another matter...

She'd look very odd if you put her boobs to one side though Grin

Grin

Why does the image of trying to dunk a beach ball under the surface of the pool come to mind?

Flump
short skirt = flat shoes
Longer skirt (knee length and more) = heels
Skinny jeans and tight top = flat shoes
(Although, it gets complicated with types of heels, because wedges are obviously different from stilleto heels etc... Oh it is complicated isn't it? Grin

badtasteflump · 20/06/2012 13:49

Can I do high heels with short (just above knee) skirt on a night out? With boobs in?

OP posts:
badtasteflump · 20/06/2012 13:49

No cleavage I mean Hmm

OP posts:
Jenski · 20/06/2012 13:55

Of course you can, as long as boobs are in Grin

badtasteflump · 20/06/2012 13:57

Jenski? Do you fancy moving into my wardrobe? I'd keep you well fed and watered....

Then I could just pop you out for the odd opinion when needed Grin

Personally, my bottom is still rather tight but my boobs are getting slack.

AmberNectarine · 20/06/2012 14:01

Really? sprayed on lemon yellow skinnies, With see through black vest and white bra? And I'm not even mentioning the shoes.

Jenski · 20/06/2012 14:04

Flump - if you saw my wardrobe you would probably change your mind. Oh, and if you saw me first thing in the morning on the school run (passing glamorous mothers) you would not want my advice.

I have to admit, I wear alot of black and layers with the odd splash of colour. I do like coats and shoes though!!!!

badtasteflump · 20/06/2012 14:04

Ok so I'm not saying it's a good look - but skinnies (of any colour) with a tight vest can look ok. I can't recall the shoes - my eyes were drawn slightly higher Confused

Ooh so can someone tell me the rules of what to wear with black? Can you do bright colour with black or is it 'cheap'? If so, what colours 'can' you do with black?

Am wearing black linen cropped trousers today and took ages choosing a top. Finally decided on a swirly patterned top in loads of colours (including black).

MadAboutHotChoc · 20/06/2012 14:17

I wear quite a bit of black - grey goes well with it, soft bright colours (e,g raspberry red rather than pillar box red, teal, plum etc).

If its just a bit of colour you want to add to an all black outfit, you can go as bright as possible e.g black dress with red high heels.

mampam · 20/06/2012 14:23

That sounds ok to me flump but then I'm probably not the best person to get style tips from Grin

I've just realised that I have absolutely no idea about clothes. I'm fat and just seem to buy whatever is in my size that will cover my bottom and thighs (the longer the better) regardless of whether it actually suits me or not Blush

I do always wear makeup though. I hope that with a made up face no one will notice the body Hmm

badtasteflump · 20/06/2012 14:28

Is there a magic place where all the rules are listed in an easy to understand way?

Where did you lot learn the rules from?

MadgesRightNip · 20/06/2012 14:59

I am a tall hourglass with a bit of a tum. I am a slave to 'tight-ish bottoms and loose-ish top'.

I live in leggings and shift dresses or skinnies and tunics. It is the most flattering style I have found for my shape.

Pinot · 20/06/2012 16:58

Personally I learnt the rules by people watching and sneering at those badly attired :o

Coloured skinnies are naff no matter who wears them.

DonaAna · 20/06/2012 17:00

It's a rule of thumb.
Others: don't wear navy and black together (but it has been chic recently).
Don't mix blue and green (says my mother).
Sit straight and don't fidget (ditto).
Don't mix red and pink (YSL broke that rule very successfully).

If you look closely at fashion photos, often what catches the eye breaks a rule or convention. That's what makes life interesting. So yes you can break any rules and make your own too (mine: never wear brogues or cropped pants).
