How to be groomed?

blobtobetter · 14/02/2012 21:03

Basically I look like a scruff! I don't have any set routine so forget sometimes to do my eyebrows until the are hideous werewolflike messy and my nails are ignored. My skin is atrocious too. I just never seem to be able to look groomed and pretty!!

Do you have a daily / weekly / monthly grooming routine?

How much time do you spend on your looks?

I am thinking that professional help might be needed! Tempted by HD Brows but they would look wrong if the rest of me is well a mess.

I have just never been organised about all this beauty stuff. It is like everyone else was taken into a secret "how to be groomed" lesson that I missed out on. Come to think of it, I missed the "how to style your hair" and "how to dress so you don't look like you got dressed in the dark.... in your Nan's wardrobe" lessons too!

I like this thread! I had a teacher at school called mrs Martin, are you her? (I doubt this very much as unless she has had a tremendous Epiphany she wouldn't have the foggiest about primers and enzyme peels!)

I am definitely getting that enzyme mask, it nibbles the dry bits off your face?! Incredible.

Also love all the dhs running around tesco looking for primer! :O

lollipoppet · 24/02/2012 16:13

Why does it never work when I try to do faces?! Grin there.

beachyhead · 24/02/2012 16:17

I lurked here and then I acted. Wink I have just come back from the BlinkBrow bar in Space NK and I am sporting a lovely new set of brows, dyed and threaded. I do not look like Jordan or remotely Waggy (although that would take more than brows!)

I am deeply unpolished and don't often bother with make up etc, but I am loving my new brows!!!

Very subtle

mrsmartin · 24/02/2012 16:17

DH's in tesco (with notes!!) is my favourite thing ever....love it Grin

(lolli - nope, I'm just a lay-person Wink)

mosschops30 · 24/02/2012 16:22

I also had a teacher called mrs martin, but she was very large with a short grey bob with a fondness for shapeless tarpaulin like clothing. That was in 1982 so im guessing not the same Grin

am addicted to the lisa eldridge site now, the dcs are running riot whilst i watch her transform in every bloody video grrr!

Forgot about hair masks! Looks like another trip to Boots later Smile

dh was very pleased with himself he rang this morning 'ive got that shit for your face, i just gave the woman your note, said i needed it and she took me right to it' Grin i love him!

mrsmartin · 24/02/2012 16:25

I think if I told DH to get me primer from tesco he would home back with a tin of white paint Grin.

You can use olive oil on your hair as a mask btw...

lollipoppet · 24/02/2012 16:29

Moss by dp is always taking about the "shit" I put on my face! Erm, no love, not shit, very expensive magic creams!

Thank god you're not her! My mrs martin looked like bill bailey with a bob.

mosschops30 · 24/02/2012 16:47

Has anyone used the aussie 3 minute miracle as a hair mask?
Any cheap ish options avilabe at boots?

mrsmartin · 24/02/2012 16:54

yep - I've used 3 min miracle - smells lovely Smile

drywhiteplease · 24/02/2012 17:05

Me too once a week.....have crap nails (soon to be amazing when my OPI stuff arrives) nbut fab hair....Aussie 3 min helps.

bessie26 · 24/02/2012 19:06

Thanks dryWhite!

I have just set myself up (yet another) Amazon wish list with all the S&B things I need/want on it. (you can add things from any website, not just amazon) This is partly so I don't forget what I need to get, but also so I can shove it under DHs nose so the DC (3y & 10m) can get me something I actually want for mother's day this year instead of the last minute & crap random selection DH usually makes on their behalf.

mrsmartin · 25/02/2012 00:00

I write DH present lists and he isn't allowed to deviate (I never go above £50 and there are always really cheap things I love like super soft fluffy socks!). This came about when he bought me a chocolate fountain for my birthday one year like I was going to clean one of those buggers out!! Grin. Amazon wish list sounds great...

MitrochondrialEve · 25/02/2012 01:16

Does anyone know if the Aussie 3 min miracle smell of banana at all?

CarpeJugulum · 25/02/2012 06:25

Just sniffed it. Mine doesn't smell terribly of banana, it's a bit fruity, but I can't put my finger on the actual scent.

Brilliant product though!

CheerfulYank · 25/02/2012 06:33

I just could never get the "girly" stuff figured out. I look clean I guess, but that's about it.

CarpeJugulum · 25/02/2012 06:47

Blast, posted too soon.

Anyway, was out last night all glammed up, and I came home and properly removed my make up with my new simple products bought in the supermarket with all the shopping and applied my nice new night cream and my face feels lovely this morning. My eyes are feeling a bit gritty, but I think that they get slightly irritated by cheap eyeshadows - not enough for me to hunt out alternatives though Grin

Now, my next job is to deal with my fingers and hands. I suffer from dermatophagia when I stress (a posh way for saying I chew the skin on my fingers round my finger nails). Anti biting stuff on my nails doesn't work as its not my nails I bite - I was always given a row by my mum if I did that, so think I moved to my fingers as a less visible alternative. Sad Keeping my hands moisturised does help, but a 17mo does not make it easy - getting to pee in peace is enough of a battle! Maybe if I deal with my nails and make them pretty, it might break my habit. Although given I've been doing it since I was 7 or 8, I'm not feeling positive. Still, I can but try.

I will recommend Body Shop Almond Oil Hand Rescue - it's a bit greasy, but I use it overnight and my hands are softer and it does smell divine!

carpeJug is that what it's called?!! Wow.ive been doing it for years too.a trully disgusting habit I can't break.sometimes my fingers bleed.at mo not too bad.in our family a few of us a guilty and we call it "picking"!embarrassed at my age,but looking after nails and hands does help I find.
I agree about almond oil at bed time...I adore that smell too.

CarpeJugulum · 25/02/2012 08:54

Yep. With you on the bleeding bit Sad. Trouble is that I don't consciously realise that I'm doing it - until I suddenly go "ouch!".

Hoping that handcreams will maybe help in terms of texture and taste, that and nice nails and cuticles.

steben · 25/02/2012 09:25

Love this thread! However am horrified about powder - do we really not use it?! I would say I have a pretty good routine -cleanse/tone, body brush, bio oil, moisturser, eye cream followed by primer, then morococn oil on hair then make up. However usually only foundation, bronzer, blushe, eyebrow pencil and mascara. However do use powder on top and powder blush - is this wrong????? I have been getting worried about it gathering in forehead lines!!!
Need to work on wardrobe mainly rather than skin....

mrsmartin · 25/02/2012 13:21

Hi Steben Smile - sounds like your routine is pretty sorted...but powder is bad Sad. Mineral foundation like bare minerals or lilly lolo is good however. it can be confusing I know...why do you use powder - habit or to control shine?

Wardrobe is all about working out your shape and chucking out anything that doesn't suit that shape (eg no peplum dresses for apple shapes).

valiumredhead · 25/02/2012 13:24

Powder is fine!

mosschops30 · 25/02/2012 14:16

Why is powder bad? I have a lovely YSL pressed powder i wear over my foundation.

I absolutely love this thread, am a bit of a godess today, last night i removed nastytoenail polish, practised new eyeshadow colours, went in bath, exfoliated, shaved legs and underarms, cleansed and toned, washed hair, applied hair mask, got out and sorted lady garden, back in shower rinsed off mask, moisturised all over, painted toenails and Shock fingers!!

My hair felt amazing thus morning, washed it and dried it nicely, applied new green palette eyeshadow (and used 3 different colours Shock Shock) looks bloody lovely, oh and new BD primer Smile

so thank you for this thread i feel very grown up (finally at 36) and glam today Smile

snicksnack · 25/02/2012 14:45

Hi all, i'd like to join. I don't bother with foundation or primer, I just wear a bit of bronzng powder and some mascara day to day, and bronzer with more full on eye make up if I am going out. Am I missing out?
Also, it's my birthday on the not too distant future. I can't really buy myself anything right now, but have decided to make a list. What are your top recommendations? I have a cleanser and moisturizer I like but hadn't bought about toner. Beauty basics...not sure I would wear a primer...

giraffesCantDonateBoneMarrow · 25/02/2012 14:46

I am shit, I have such great intentions...
