Best I could come up with......

OP posts:

Thank you so much. Yes he says I should say no to the presentation. Of course the others will do it. But he says stuff it and decline.

AmberNectarine · 12/01/2012 14:21

He is absolutely fine either way.

But he always declines when people say do some work and we will decide on that. He is a hard nut re his worth, I'm more of a softy but have been pissed off in the past about giving free information.

I know they are live briefs, as he mentioned in the interview that he wanted to do another brief but couldn't because they will probably give it to me (paid, still freelance). So I could be the 'best' and get the job, but I have to be really sure I want it first otherwise I do this presentation and I decide not to but then they have this work. Which would cost a bit in reality.

Quite complicated! I suppose the big question is how much do I want it....

notyummy · 12/01/2012 14:31

The consultancy I worked for would often do a small piece of live work for free to get engaged with a firm - however they would have a minimum threshold of deal that they would do this with (i.e it had to be a decent sized overall piece of work they were seeking to land in order for them to agree to it.) I think it is quite common with consultancy firms (even small ones.) May be less so for sole traders.

MarshaBrady · 12/01/2012 14:33

Thanks NY. Have you experienced it in an interview situation to get a permanent job? (sorry for hijack everyone).

notyummy · 12/01/2012 14:45

Yes - but interestingly it was for a job in the public sector. I had to write a Board paper outlining how I would go about the largest database in Europe (which is held by said organisation)!!

It wasn't the 'full' piece of work though, because it was done under 'exam' conditions and then had to be presented to the Board (so you couldn't cut and paste from internet I suspect.....) You also couldn't take it with you, so you effectively 'lost' the work.

notyummy · 12/01/2012 14:46

overhauling the largest database in Europe.

MarshaBrady · 12/01/2012 14:48

Thanks NY (sounds quite intense!). I think my people know they are getting work for free. I've asked my recruitment cons to ring me back so I can see if it's standard for strategy-type stuff.

MarshaBrady · 12/01/2012 14:55

(also should add that dh's mind set is informed by the fact that he used to be employed rather than building a business, which would make one do things differently I think).

Yes I could stage it very delicately. So that is good but not particularly useful (if possible!).

My contact interviewed me. He's the main one behind this, less work for him!

Actually some guy said to me once that it was crucial to not give too much away while proving you could do the job.

Yes to lots of pitches in our industry too.

Oooh! Now even more tempted. May order to try with Dotty P coated skinnies.

AmberNectarine · 12/01/2012 15:31

Ok, ollie I have news: I tried on the HL for you. It is AMAZING! So flattering, and actually the clever ruching means its not too long! Fell just below knee on me (5'4"). So great on an hourglass figure, will definitely buy, just need to do some ebaying as am way over budget this month. colour sort of greeny grey, IYKWIM.

AmberNectarine · 12/01/2012 15:34

Actually that sounds wrong, what I mean is grey with just the hint of a suggestion of green which lifts the colour. Greeny grey sounds like sludge!

rufus101 · 12/01/2012 15:35

Nice blouse Verity, and you are so good to look for the coat!
I think that dress is lovely NY. The colours would look amazing in you.
Have no advice Marsha. I would have thought it was part of the game to do a presentation, but wouldn't have thought about the giving away your ideas for free. But as Annie said recently about her DH, you are the only one who would be able to implement your ideas properly, and they must know that.

MidnightinMoscow · 12/01/2012 15:50

I see where you are coming from Marsha. But even in my job I was expected to do a presentation which was based upon how would I meet DoH targets set for the Trust.

Agree though that anyone can have the ideas, its the doing it that makes the difference. Maybe you need to think about making sure there is a strong emphasis on how 'you' would implement the ideas and what 'your' impact would be, in order to sell yourself and stand out from others.

My industry is world from yours though, so I may be way off. Grin

NY fab dress, the shape reminds me of that lovely Oasis dress you had last year.

DS has had no sleep today - we are entering meltdown zone very shortly.....

carciofi · 12/01/2012 16:11

I've had to give presentations in interviews in the past but again a different industry. Good luck if you decide to proceed, Marsha.

Thanks, Reine, I'm usually very pragmatic too but I might check the book out.

Verity, good find on the bag. False message of lethargy makes me giggle too.

Gorgeous dress, NY.

FritziGreenEyes · 12/01/2012 16:26

Oh, I love Jillian's pep talk, too. Even DD knows some of her phrases Grin

blossoming · 12/01/2012 16:31

No despatch note from NaP, so dress will not arrive in time for Saturday. Never mind.
Sorry have nothing to add marsha, just good luck with it and I'm sure you'll make the right decision.
Still feeling pale and fat and tired. Should start using j&j again. It usually perks me up this time of year.
When is it our 2 year anniversary?

MarshaBrady · 12/01/2012 17:25

Thanks everyone Smile. Have emailed rc and see what she says. If it was my ideal job I'd probably go all guns blazing etc.

Soon Bloss, soon! I think January sometime?

That HL dress does sound divine.
