Brazilian waxing - first time - nervous!

Have namechanged for this, sorry Blush
I've met a new man and though he's put no pressure on at all (as would run a mile) and despite usually having somewhat feminist views of unwanted hair - I've decided that just once I'm going to have it all off and see how I like it.
I'm nervous though! Where do I go? Does it matter - lots of places seem to do it. Do I tell them I'm nervous? Do they remove it all right back to the anal region? Will it be someone female? Can I just turn up? Does it matter that I had sex yesterday?
Sorry for all the questions and not even a Friday - any answers gratefully received :)

I'm a therapist and I always do bum automatically and a good therapist should. Have a warm bath before as it opens the hair follicles and take paracetamol as suggested. Oh wait another day or so if you have had sex. Believe me and ALOT of other therapists that yoy can still smell that someone has just had it, believe me it stinks and we've got to go near it!!
good luck.

seeker · 03/01/2012 18:37

If you know why are you buying into it?

seeker · 03/01/2012 18:38

Are you not even put off by the "therapist's" comments?

AlwaysWild · 03/01/2012 18:43

Baffled by the link between lust and removing pubic hair. Never heard that one before. I have both, at the same time.

CurlyhairedAssassin · 03/01/2012 18:57

What happens if you are extra hairy down there? Do they charge double? They probably would need to for me. Grin

And would they comment on monkey-like tendancies to each other during their break? Or even say to you "I'm just going to get my colleague - I need some expert advice." I would be MORTIFIED if someone said that to me.....

MrsCampbellBlack · 03/01/2012 19:10

Curly - am pretty sure they've seen all sorts.

Seeker - I do various things to make myself look more 'attractive' including threading, waxing, painting nails, dyeing my hair, putting on make up etc - do you not do any of these or is it just brazilians that you draw the line at?

I also wear heels which I know Caitlin Moran finds a bit mad.

I think the first time I had one was because was just going for my general tidy up pre holiday and the therapist ended up taking more off than I'd bargained for.

JasperJohns · 03/01/2012 19:11

i'm hideously hirsute, but I think I pay the going rate!

My therapist humours me by saying 'nooo, it's not that bad' whilst checking her stock cupboard for extra wax.

JasperJohns · 03/01/2012 19:15

PS, this is style and beauty, not feminism.

sunshineoutdoors · 03/01/2012 19:20

I had sex afterwards once and it all swelled up hideously. I panicked worrying I was going to look like an aubergine forever! Luckily it went down. After years of hollywoods I am fed up with the ingrown hairs and am going to grow to a neatly trimmed look. Was fun while it lasted though.

iFailedTheTuringTest · 03/01/2012 19:22

I just don't like finding pubes in the bath....

Don't know if there's a feminist slant on that one?

Seeker she was asking for honest advice and hopefully I gave her that. If you dont like the idea of people removing hair from their nether regions why do you read the threads. Surely its easier not to read?

Victorialucas · 03/01/2012 19:47

Doesn't a Brazilian put you at greater risk of sexually transmitted diseases? Better use a condom.

MidnightinMoscow · 03/01/2012 19:52

No Victoria unprotected sexual contact is what puts someone at greater risk of STD's.

Cannot understand why a post re pubic hair removal in Style and Beauty has resulted in the OP being questions re STD's and the porn industry.

LeBOF · 03/01/2012 19:54

Surely this is a topic in which to discuss Style and Beauty, not a safe space where beauty practices cannot be questioned?

That's the line from MNHQ, anyway...Wink

LeBOF · 03/01/2012 19:55

Victoria Shock

I'm not sure about that, but a Glaswegian gave me crabs once.

Oh getting your pubic hair waxed off exposes you to all sorts of bacteria.

Pubes trap bacteria and stop them going into your fanny. It's v. unhygienic to wax 'em off.

But your choice of course. Why are you going to a salon? Wouldn't it be better to do it at home with hot wax? Then at least you'd be in control about it and stop if it's too much agony. Or the other option is to shave first and then wait a few days then wax, when the hair is much shorter. This is what I have been reliably informed by a friend, is what she does (TMI in all honesty, but hey, she appeared to want to confide this. Xmas Grin)

MrsCampbellBlack · 03/01/2012 20:05

I really struggle to see how its unhygienic to wax if one showers and washes regularly . . .

When you say he's not putting you under pressure - has the subject of baldity in your nether regions been discussed then?

MidnightinMoscow · 03/01/2012 20:14

But the OP didn't ask if she was buying into the pornification of women by getting rid of her pubes, or whether she was letting down the sisterhood.

She only asked for some practical advice about getting her fange waxed. Grin

kingbeat23 · 03/01/2012 20:16

If you are going to get it done, then make sure you trim first. The longer hair makes it hurt more.

Decide where you want the hair off first. Pre-DD, I had brazilian landing strip and a small bit on top, now pretty much just trim and a tidy up if I'm swimming.

Don't have sex before or after and wear knickers that you'd wear on your period as the wax gets left behind.

Go to a salon and therapist that is recommended to you, and if it doesn't feel right for you, then you don't have to go through with it. I now only have one therapist that I will let come near me with wax, but you need to "shop around". If you're in north-east london, I'll pm you her number and name of the salon she works in.

I understand the feminist ideals about hair and realise that this has become a sensitive (see what I did there Wink ) issue recently on many a thread, but love the fact that MN can give other women advice on issues that they themselves have decided for themselves.

BasilRathbone · 03/01/2012 20:19

I find that really odd.

"don't have sex before or after"

Given that you're supposed ot be doing it for sexiness reasons, it seems a bit self-defeating not to have a shag afterwards.

Very much like those contraceptive pills which lower women's libido and make them not want to shag as they can't be arsed anymore.

The world is a very odd place.

BasilRathbone · 03/01/2012 20:21

Cue the "I don't do it for sexiness - I just like it" responses.

Funny how no one seems ot "just like" shaving the front of their heads anymore, llike the ladies of Elizabeth I's court. Why don't we "just like it"? Why does no one shave the front of their heads now?
