New thread.

OP posts:
AmberNectarine · 09/01/2012 07:56

Thanks ants, pretty sure it is the pox, though doesn't seem to have worsened yet and he is happy (but tired, having gone to bed at 9pm due to a 3.5th nap y'day). Fingers crossed it is a v mild case. We are lucky that the house basically backs on to a large empty playing field, so I can release him there for a bit without endangering anyone. I have also got his 16 miles of wooden railway out so that is keeping him amused for now.

The baby seems fine for now, though obviously it can take a while to show up... She is a perennial sleepsuit wearer anyway [lazy] so will use that trick if/when her time comes. On the plus side got a 4hr stretch last night which was amazing, but has had that peculiar effect of making me even more aware of what I've been missing, thus more tired!

annie great buys! Does anyone know if the Whistles skinnies are at all shiny? If anyone needs spanx for legs 'tis I, but any kind of sheen on my legs highlights the problem...

red I've never stripped a wall, but do enjoy decorating a lot, even though it only ever seems to be done when I am heavily pregnant...

MidnightinMoscow · 09/01/2012 08:16

Oh dear Amber, sorry to hear about the pox arrival. I really hope that the DC's get a mild case of it for you. Hang on in there. I saw the coated skinnies yesterday, no they are not really shiny at all, quite muted in fact. They are lovely.

Sorry to hear about DS everything, you are doing such a sterling job on your own. Wanting a good stretch of sleep...YANBU. Hope things get better for you both.

I have a friend who lives a short walk from the village Marsha, it's lovely to go there to meet her. Although she is currently living in Boston for a year!

Sounds very satisfying work Red. Without sounding like a loon, I love seeing walls newly plastered. Totally transforms a room I think.

Ants and Ollie hope you have both woken feeling a little better today.

Roxy will be banished to the back of mind I'm afraid. DH not happy for me to put on the CC and pay it off over a couple of months, made me feel really crappy for asking. Too knackered to counter argue about his golf trips etc. Is it so dreadful to say that the one thing I find so hard about becoming a mother is the lack of confidentiality around money? Before I met DH I bought and sold two properties, and pretty much knew what I could splurge on and what I need to hold back on. Not the most technical of systems, but I got by. That's all gone now that I am not bringing in my previous wage.

notyummy · 09/01/2012 08:37

Morning all.

Sorry to hear about the chicken pox Amber. DD was about 2 when she had it I think, but didn't get it particularly badly and so we could manage with calamine etc. She wasn't ill at all, so the hardest thing was keeping her away from people - and out of childcare (and hence one of us of work too?) when she was ostensibly absolutely fine. Re the coated skinnies - I will not be keeping if shiny as my simply thighs do not need that kind of emphasis Grin. My current coated ones from Gap aren't shiny - just kind of 'textured' - so I am hoping the Whistles ones will be similar.

NYE - Sending much sympathy re the evening thing. I need some evening time too - as I have to be an early riser for work at least part of the week I like to be in bed around 1030 so if DD isn't in bed on time I have virtually no time to myself. When I am on my own I need that time to sort my life out and then get an hour to relax! They are all so different in terms of sleep requirements as well! I think sorting out the 'right' amount of daytime nap can definitely help in terms of them being suitably tired at bedtime, but that magic 'right' amount seems to vary so much. DD only had about 2 naps a week (generally on Friday and Saturday after 4 days in childcare had worn her out) from around 3.5 onwards I think. She would have been asleep by around 7 30 in the evening then, generally waking around 630 to 7am in the morning. We have had a rabbit clock for her since she was 2.5 and that was great for grabbing an extra half hour in the morning. From talking to friends with these clocks, the secret to them working or not seems to be the age that they are introduced (i.e. too early and they just don't understand and have no self-control - too late and they have already had a long period of getting up whenever they fancy and trying to change it is a nightmare!) At 5.5 she is obviously much more flexible about staying up a bit later if we want to go out and do stuff, but I find for school purposes she has to be asleep by 8pm, which means she is generally awake by 7 15 in the morning to allow a relaxed start to the day. She has to be at school by 8 35. Any later and everything in the morning would be an unmanageable rush for the mothers help - or me!

Annie - I agree. Fleecy does look like Jenny Seagrove!

Looby - No marathons! I have a slightly dodgy left knee, so I think that would be too much for it. I managed to work up to 13 miles with not too many problems last summer, and have a rough aim of completing a Kilothon (i.e. 25 kilometres - approx 16 miles I think.) I wouldn't want to go any further. I have run a number of 10k races and my times for 10k up to half marathon are respectable for my age, but not great. I am only competitive against myself though, as I don't run in a club or anything.

Re the MU - perhaps we can find somewhere to eat that is near to the 'Bar with the Cave' Wink to make logistics easy? Also, can you book tables in that bar? I only ask because I seem to remember that the table we originally sat on upstairs was pre-booked to another party, hence us having to relocate. Any ideas of hotels from anyone yet? Same as before or a change?? Not 100% certain I will be staying over, but I suspect so.

Wearing a relatively old, but very flattering wrap dress from Pretaportobello today - black with a circus print on. With opaques and heeled brogues.

FritziGreenEyes · 09/01/2012 09:02

amber So sorry to hear about the chickenpox. I had DD vaccinated when she was little Blush

notyummy I remember that circus print dress. Love your outfits for work!

Have put away all Christmas decorations yesterday and will buy lovely fresh flowers as a reward. Have resolved not to buy any clothes until I have got rid off the post-holiday muffin top. May even have to take up shredding again. Desperate times ...

Hope everyone is feeling better this morning. I feel very much rested and happy. Hated to hide my tanned feet in wooly socks and biker boots when we left for school .

MarshaBrady · 09/01/2012 09:05

NY the first time we went I asked about booking a table and they said minimum spend. It was quite high iirc. I'll check what the situation is these days.

Amber I hope it is mild. It's so much better after it happens and everyone is ok. I sort of feel as if ds2 should have it soon.

Fritzi oh I know. I can't really tan my face as get freckles. So when I got back from Australia the best I could do was flash a tanned wrist. It was hopeless, no one thought I was mega tanned. And I was

I'm going to have to find a Whistles to try the skinnies on.

None of my dcs have had chicken pox much to my dismay. I got it later and was very poorly.
I am in my gorgeous new jigsaw jumper today. Love it so much. It was a Roxy moment when I tried it on!
Am dressed classically in modern boot cuts and heeled lace ups so have toughened the look with my Barbour Cameron. It is very mild. Thanks for reminding me of it mim. There's a Breakfast reporter wearing one at the moment too, but in rustic.

notyummy · 09/01/2012 12:15

I have PMed those that I think are coming to the MU and may be looking for a hotel room. If you haven't got it, let me know!

OllieinOrange · 09/01/2012 12:31

Thank you for all your lovely get well soon posts. I've turned a corner as they say (but does that have more to do with school starting back today too I wonder?)

Amber hope the little ones are ok. Mine got it but only had 7 spots each and were not at all poorly so really expect them to get it again later in life.

Marsha your tan comments made me smile and nod. I keep my watch on as having a watch mark is the only way I can prove I have a tan! Was very silly in my teenage years about wanting to be brown and have horrible lines on my delcotage (sp?) which I really regret.

Meet Up - what time did we get to the bar back in Oct? Were we just lucky about getting a table upstairs or was it quiet? Im with NY about eating close by (do you remember Ants, you and I drooling over the menu and eyeing up another table's burgers cos we were so hungry?) Really pleased you are both staying over Bloss and NYE. Will be great to meet you too Amber. Carciofi and Verity will you be able to join us too? Hope so.

Garden news from Ollie Towers - we had a line of tall and ugly conifer-like trees removed from the back of the garden and the amount of light its created is incredible. Was half hoping for 2 hunky tree surgeons (a la Reds builder) to appear but alas they were both over 50 and wearing bandanas Shock

carciofi · 09/01/2012 12:40

Hi all.

If the meetup is in the afternoon I could make it, I think, but not the evening. Only thing is that is a bank holiday in Ireland so I was going to try to persuade my dad to come over that weekend.

Glad you like the cords, Fleecy.

Verity, your cat sounds gorgeous, DD1 would love her. There is one slight problem in that I am allergic to cats!

I understand about the evenings, Everything, it is also the only time I have to myself.

Mim, shame about the Roxy ... maybe they could order it through House of Fraser, don't you have vouchers?

My DDs haven't had chicken pox either. Hope your DC get well soon, Amber. Great find on the boots.

I am fed up with life at the moment so will be taking a break for a while. Nothing really wrong so I don't know what it is really. Chat to those of you on Facebook or back when I am sunnier!

Hopefully · 09/01/2012 12:56

MIM Losing financial independence etc with becoming a mother is hard - maybe chat with your DH about it when you're feeling up or it in preparation for the next Roxy moment?

NYE can you inform XH he's to stay till DS is asleep? It is not fair for him to swan off to his quiet home when he's done his 'evening', leaving you with v wakeful child.

My DS's haven't had chicken pox, no idea how as DS1 has been repeatedly exposed. Too much to hope that they are both naturally immune!

I am going through my wardrobe putting mental outfits together trying to work out what the gaps are. There are a lot of gaps. Like something to wear for casual other than bloody t-shirts. And flat ankle boots. Are Chelsea boots over skinnies too weird?

notyummy · 09/01/2012 13:02

I have flat grey boots I wear with skinnies. Not exactly Chelsea, as they are slightly harder edged/biker style, but similar height to Chelsea boots - and flat. I think they work quite well!

AmberNectarine · 09/01/2012 13:26

Oh dear, all this drama and it has turned out to just be a rash! Took him to Drs and it is something viral apparently, not helped by the fact he suffers badly with eczema. Still, glad the baby is safe and I don't have to keep him caged! We went to the playground to celebrate! thanks for all your kind wishes!

mim I found losing my financial independence so hard. That being said I am quite glad DH holds the reins in that dept or we'd have no savings! I asked him to set me a 'clothes budget' and luckily he has been generous, but it helps keep me on the straight and narrow!

AmberNectarine · 09/01/2012 13:30

Carciofi don't go! It doesn't have to be sweetness and light on here all the time!

MarshaBrady · 09/01/2012 14:08

Ollie oh we really need to do that with one of our trees. But need a tree order to do it. I should sort that out.

Caricofi stay. I am in the most terrible mood today, due to two very important things being scheduled at exactly the same time, grrr and someone fishing for information about an interview. Combined with ds going to bed at 10.30 last night as he slept in the car yesterday.

NYE I need to have proper evenings too. So ds2 doesn't nap, which does make it harder to get stuff done in the day.

Russianred · 09/01/2012 14:22

Am in a depressive slump too. Close to tears in J L (pathetic and need priorities reassessed , i know) as skinnies awful - huge at waist, gaping in crotch but so tight on calves - can you have a calfectomy?! If i exercise it makes them worse! That's been Agnes, houlihans , these skinnies and countless others that i am hideous in. Yuck.

OP posts:
pickledsiblings · 09/01/2012 14:30

Red, your figure is perfectly suited to dresses - you looked stunning at the MU. Keep searching for the right pair of jeans and when you find them, buy loads of pairs of them. The Earharts worked on you and there will be others. (Is it bad that 'calfectomy" made me LoL?)

Dauphin · 09/01/2012 14:30

Hey Carciofi...! Do stay. I get like that from time to time, and it usually means I need a Spa Day or something Wink....being on the go with 2 little ones is all consuming and exhausting....Have you managed to to sort a babysitter yet?

Funny thing happened this morning (dh and I had words!!!)...DH couldn't get into study to locate laptop and briefcase for trip to Ireland....door jammed shut! I was twisting handle and it came off in my hand, then I remembered that yesterday the same thing had happened to me with the handle on the interior of the door when I tried to leave the room, and I'd meant to mention it to dh!!! By now I was in complete and utter hysterics...he didn't see the funny side at all, oh no! He had to virtually break in!!!!! I apologised profusely (in between sniggers), though he has since rung up and is laughing now!...I'm still laughing!

Dauphin · 09/01/2012 14:32

Oh Red....

pickledsiblings · 09/01/2012 14:34

Carciofi, I am not surprised you are feeling fed up. Your situation of an impending relocation is a familiar one to me and I remember feeling dreadful for ages - completely in no mans land. You start to distance yourself ever so slightly from those that you will leave behind and that just makes you feel lonely. The upside of this thread is that we will always be here Smile.

OllieinOrange · 09/01/2012 14:37

Red sympathies on the trouser front - I have the same problem with calves (I blame doing too much sport when younger....). Combined with a Jo Lo bum I find buying trousers and jeans v difficult and stressfful tbh. Even the sales assistants in Donna Ida were at a lost when I was trying on numerous J Brands!

I am in a January fug but have felt a bit off since before Christmas - it all seemed such an effort this year and didnt have the usual feel about it. Spoke with 2 Mums from school and they said the same. I always feel a bit down in January so try and get a few things in the diary to look forward too to help the days/weeks pass. Know that sounds very Pollyanna-like but it helps me.

NY will PM you later but great job re the restaurant!

MarshaBrady · 09/01/2012 14:54

Oh god I might have to order something to improve my mood .

NY looks good.

Russianred · 09/01/2012 15:05

Thanks ladies. I shall keep searching, but I really do hate it. I should just wear dresses all the time to avoid the pain. Calfectomy was a little tongue in cheek Pickled! I did see a lovely Broderie top in Phase 8 which made me think of Ollie and Carciofi. Carciofi, I completely agree with Pickled - I felt that way from March-July and it's no fun. And it's January. And you're not getting enough sleep. Stick around and we'll all be fed up together!

Feel like I am bucking the trend a bit by being relatively cheerful because I have had a bit of sleep and don't need to paint a red cross on the door! And the sainsburys delivery man has just arrived with doughnuts! However, next week I'll be crying that nothing fits!

red never met you but you look great in pics, chin up! Recommend the 811s for you, I think I'm probably a similar shape to you (though on a larger scale!) and they are a great fit for me - still a teensy bit gappy at back but a nice mid rise and not too narrow in the calf.
