BD, reading between the lines I'm not getting the clear impression that House A is the one for you. And the vendors sound like they could end up messing you around. Just my impression.... I think if you are going to stretch yourselves financially it has to be for something you both love.

Or maybe it's just me - pragmatism over views anytime.

The fact that you are having such doubts makes me think you should be out there looking for House C, D, E......

Stropperella · 25/11/2011 19:28

CV, is your house nice and fresh again now? Grin

bigTillyMint · 25/11/2011 19:42

BD, how old is/are your DC?

Will house A still feel big enough when you have x teenagers wanting their own space too?

I agree with CV and Strops and old queenie...... (it's not looking good for house A!)

oldqueenie · 25/11/2011 19:44

well personally I'm a believer in stretching yourself when buying property... what seems like a humungous mortgage commitment at the time usually looks reasonable with the glorious benefit of hindsight... but you've probably either want to live there for a good long time or think you can easily add value and make a profit on any resale....aaaagh such difficult decisions. we moved a year and a half ago and as far as i'm concerned I'm not moving again Grin

thenightsky · 25/11/2011 20:03

Hmm.. am with Queenie on this one. We stretched ourselves to get fab detached 5 bedroom jobbie and don't regret it for one moment.

I tend to live by the saying... you only regret what you do NOT do.

Stropperella · 25/11/2011 21:24

Ah, I have a long history of doing things more or less on impulse and regretting them quite a lot afterwards. I am much more cautious these days.

bigTillyMint · 25/11/2011 21:49

Yes, but the point I am making is it not a big house, and no chance of extending - will a cosy cottage style be OK with hormonal teenager(s) around?

MrsSchadenfreude · 25/11/2011 21:57

House A sounds like it has potential to be huge pain in the arse. Ditch it and look for C, D, E and F.

I bought our flat on impulse. DH did not see it until the day before we completed. We used to live round the corner and he used to say, If a flat comes up in that block, we should buy one because they must be fucking huge. It's not exactly huge, but bigger than the shoebox we had before. We lived in it for three months before moving overseas.

CointreauVersial · 25/11/2011 23:11

Yes, the stinky roofers have gone, but they didn't quite finish, so they are back tomorrow. I must remember to display the air freshener prominently (and buy more biscuits - Christ, they get through loads!).

We are also not moving again, ever - at least not until the blooming solar panels have paid us back.

Blackduck · 26/11/2011 00:04

Sorry crepeys, went out to dinner mid your responses. Only one ds - currently 8 - so not that many hormonal teenagers to deal with and there is a farking great hill out back you can climb up to escape....
I guess my dithering is potentially a big hint, but I have dithered before and gone along with dp and it's all been fine.....
Ahhh.......

motherinferior · 26/11/2011 08:21

Hmm. I am inclined to watch out for house C.

Having said which we went for this house when we really couldn't afford it and things have worked out - but mainly because Mr Inferior got a well-paid job at just at the point when things were going horribly tits-up for us. And then I got this job at the point where we were about to have to have a Serious Talk about our mortgage; which has grown huger over the years as we did the loft, put in Nice Double Glazing* etc. It is a lovely house to live in, mind.

although the boiler is about to go, and we are awaiting the boiler bloke recommended by Younger MNer to see what can be done

*DP argues that as this was not the absolutely most expensive sort, we got a bargain. DP's spending habits are perhaps not entirely the same as mine, and the reason why we have separate bank accounts.

And hello, LadyWord. We like new Crepeys, innit.

Blackduck · 26/11/2011 08:28

MI that sounds like dp's thinking :) (and hence the reason we have separate accounts too...)

motherinferior · 26/11/2011 09:12

And heavens to Murgatroyd, isn't it warm? My life's expertise in thermals is going to waste. I can't even wear my new Gap sweater Shock

Blackduck · 26/11/2011 10:11

Oh god it's just so horrible when ou have to stamp on someones dreams isn't it. I am just not convinced that we can financially do this house, but I know it is dp's dream.... < sigh>

MrsSchadenfreude · 26/11/2011 22:20

Warm?? It is freezing here. We had to spend the afternoon in a bar on the Boulevard St Michel (la la la la la la la) drinking to get warm. Then we came home and opened the Beaujolais Nouveau. Grin

Blackduck · 26/11/2011 22:28

Went back and looked at house A (mid conversion) dp got it - they are not moving anytime soon....... Move on.... Thanks hags, input was spot on Walk away.....
I am a happier bunny tonight

oldqueenie · 26/11/2011 22:52

when you find house C you'll be soooo pleased you didn't buy something that didn't feel right.

Blackduck · 26/11/2011 22:53

:) so right. Just had to get dp to see it :)

Blackduck · 27/11/2011 09:02

How was the meet up hags? Are you all very hungover, hence radio silence......?

Blackduck · 27/11/2011 09:56
MrsSchadenfreude · 27/11/2011 10:04

CointreauVersial is still throwing up and BigTillyMint is holding her hair out of her face while she pukes. Grin

RubyRubyRuby is having hair of the dog in the Champagne Bar at St Pancras. She is on her third glass and keeps missing her train by having "one more for the road."

GrinGrinGrin

Actually no idea who went!

bigTillyMint · 27/11/2011 10:15

Here I amSmile Despite CV and I downing our bodyweight in G+T's, neither of us fell down any stairs on our way to catch our trains home and not a hangover in sight here at least, thanks to the watered-down GinGrin

Ruby, looked very glam and not at all pissed despite having downed a jeroboam of champagne in the Kings X bar.

CointreauVersial · 27/11/2011 10:53

Yaaayy!! Morning crepeys, how's it hanging?

Clear head here too. The G&T was most definitely watered down - we had to upgrade to the Bombay Sapphire in the end (well, you can't dance round handbags to Bohemian Rhapsody stone-cold sober, can you?).

It was a fun night, though - nice to meet you at last, Ruby (note to crepeys, Ruby is seriously glam).

herbaceous · 27/11/2011 10:56

Morning hags. I however do have a hangover, after downing my body weight (a considerable quantity) of cava last night. And champers, in homage to Mrs S. We had 11 people over for drinks and food. Great fun. Though didn't get to bed until 1.30, and then had the dreaded 'wake up in a sweat' post-drinking thing. However, I was allowed to lie in until 9.45, by which point DP had done most of the clearing up.

We've ended up in net profit of wine, which is always good.

I bought this dress, which was something of a barg, and looked pretty good!

motherinferior · 27/11/2011 11:58

I have a cava-related hangover too Blush. I am drinking too much at the moment, I do realise. This happens when I am knackered and stressed.

On the other hand my article is finally in.
