Bare Escentuals: THE DEVIL'S OWN WORK

1028 replies

JodieHarsh · 25/09/2011 17:16

I must post about this. I have just spunked nearly ninety quid on some Bare Escentuals starter kit things.

I arrived at the counter in Stratford Westfield with a hideous bright red, sore, scarred, spotty, sweaty face, and some WITCH managed to take a decade off me with POWDER. Just powder! I mean - WT actual F?! A tube ride and a 20 minute walk home and it's still there. SURELY that's not right. I've used all sorts of super-max coverage matte stuff and it didn't cover ANYTHING like this well. O and I have the glowing rosy cheeks of a teen Shock

I promise I've not been giver a tenner to post this stuff. It's just I've spent so much I feel slightly sick. Does anyone else use this stuff? it's not going to last is it. i'm an idiot. What have I done

you lot are a gang of witches, you really are. since this thread reached 100 posts I just knew I woud give in and buy the stuff. tried resisting for 4 days and finally failed miserably today. when my manager asked if I wanted him to fetch me something from town at lunchtime I handed him £50 and sent him off to debenhams...Grin

Soooo. I've tried it and it's lovely. easy to apply. DP says it looks much better than normal make up and it looks like I'm not wearing anything but am fresh faced, apparently.

if it wasn't for lack of any self control Mumsnet, I'd be much richer. Sigh.

Mumelie · 29/09/2011 21:00

BE is amazing - fact! I have been using it for about 3 years now and my skin has never looked so good. I rarely have the vicious spots I used to. Have now converted to all their products. The mascara is brilliant and love to treat myself to one of their colour kits about twice a year.

Um, hello...have been reading thread though a bit of an interloper as I'm using Laura Mercier BUT I need to know what your orange lady showed you re hiding pores. It's critical, my skin looks fab but get too close and my pores look like they could provide decent accommodation to a family of small rodents.

MmeLindor. · 29/09/2011 21:05

I can see this thread is going to cost me a good bit more money.

I'm sooooooooooooooo glad pinot, I was in terror people would be crushed with disapointment and may I say how VERY well you look my dear ? Grin. I think the weekend heatwave will be a good test....

Jezza, i THINK that it's all about a) primer and b) not bunging on a load at once, but layering up weeeeeny amounts so they don't clogged. For eg., my open pores are on my forehead, so I don't put much there and it just sort of rests over it, you know?? and the primer is amazeballs.

also i think that with the use of mineral makeup the general quality of your skin is s'posed to improve, sort of thing. It is way too early for me to know if this is the truth!

Pinot · 29/09/2011 21:25

Well heatwave can come because I'm-a-ready! I cooked up a storm today in a steaming kitchen and it didn't budge. Nearly 2 hrs of cooking!

Epic! This stuff is epic!

Even DH knows all about this stuff. And i don;'t care that I'm too bastard fat to wear summery clothes in the bastard heatwave. No-one's going to be looking below the neck - they'll all be wondering how on earth my lovely dewy even skin is staying so perfick in the heat....

meltedchocolate · 29/09/2011 22:11

Love that everyone has got giddy :o
Mine has been on for short of twelve hours and is off enough now that my veins are waving at me. So impressed with how long it had kept them covered. Also no spots after two days with makeup on... That doesn't normally happen :)

peedieworky · 29/09/2011 22:19

So... This has got me curious! Am 35 and never worn make up. Got 4 month old DS and now look perma-tired. Not happy! How is this for a novice make-upper with no effing time limited opportunity to carefully apply make-up?

MadamTwoSwords · 29/09/2011 22:40

Panic over, after 10 -30- minutes of looking I found the brush. Heatwave do your worst tomorrow.

Snapespeare · 29/09/2011 22:56

i like that i don't feel slimy and like my face is sliding off in higher temperatures or after mild exertion. it is unbelievable that something that looks so small and inconsequential can provide such magnificence.

RollingInTheAisles · 29/09/2011 23:02

For the visible pore thing I apply as normal and then run a slightly damp finger or sponge over the area and it sort of blends it in and gets rid of the problem.

If you fancy using minerals for under eye shadows then well rested here is the same product as bisque but a much better shade for this. Don't have to buy with the brush. The concealer one with the kit is fine.

gregssausageroll · 30/09/2011 07:50

Just had a look at QVC. For this weekend they have a few things on 4 x payments and there are about 6 or so BE kits. Click on the front page banner about their 18th birthday and they should come up.

JodieSwirlTapBuff · 30/09/2011 08:04

Peedie if you've never worn makeup before then I don't think you'd find it hard to apply because you're not used to any kind of makeup application, IYSWIM. for people used to rubbing in creams, the swirltapbuff is a bit odd, but if you start that way it'll seem natural. And you don't of course need a full face of maquillage to perk you up - just the foundation, a touch of the mineral veil and some mascara, and bam, the equivalent of a month's beauty sleep.

Snape I agree, I can't believe something so paltry as a pot of powder can be so amaze, and make me feel so much better. All my hormone spots have now gone, and I know I'd be pizza-faced until after my period on normal makeup. I am wondering if I might have finally found the solution to my rubbish skin, but I don't want to get my hopes up......

tonight will be another Ultimate Test - I have a HUGELY IMPORTANT MEETING OF IMPORTANTNESS at 5ish then I have to dash home, cook supper, and sit up carousing with disreputable guests until about 4am. Under these circs I would have mega-shiny head at about 9pm tops but NOT THIS TIME ME HEARTIES! Grin

Right, so who's due for a delivery/application update this morning then

TribbleWithoutACause · 30/09/2011 08:26

Can someone link me to a tester kit, I've tried finding it on feel unique but can't find one.

My current foundation is making me look a tad tired and grey.

JodieSwirlTapBuff · 30/09/2011 08:37

hmmm, I don't know about a tester kit, I've only seen the starter ones, but I think someone upfred might have bought one.....

Snapespeare · 30/09/2011 08:40

re: concealer - the slightly scary woman in selfridges (perfectly pleasant, but full make up under shop lights makes me feel queasy inadequate unsettled.) said just run the concealer brush around the residue in your foundation lid and apply to broken veins, under eye shadows etc. it works just fine. no need for bisque.

I keep looking at myself. i look healthy and not caked in make-up. I feel slightly possesive of my wonder-powder and am not updating my fb to my lady-friends - so it's generous of Jodie to share.

by christ! we all look magnificent!

CristinadellaPizza · 30/09/2011 08:41

Tribble - the kit I got for £15 from LookFantastic is sort of a tester kit. It's got original and matte foundation stuff, the bisque concealer and the mineral veil and two brushes.

That's probably the cheapest way to give it a whirl. Or swirl even Wink

I hope mine comes today but more likely tomorrow or Monday. Actually it would be better if it came at the weekend or people will wonder what I've been doing this morning if I go to school pick up looking ten years younger :o

JodieSwirlTapBuff · 30/09/2011 08:45

I'm not telling anyone in RL, Snapes

And yes yes - i don't have the concealer, I just tap on a little tiny bit extra with the flat brush, and it covered an absolutely SCARLET spot-scar all day.

Cristine I will be waiting for your update, and, tragically enough, I am not even joking.

MrsDistinctlyMintyMonetarism · 30/09/2011 08:53

Why isn't it Monday yet??

Stupid bloody dc having holidays when I should be shedding years.

Thoughtless. That's what it is. Damn you Queensland education department Sad

meltedchocolate · 30/09/2011 08:53

Haha, are any of us 'fessin' to RL people, Snape?! I'm not!

Hoping my WARMTH will arrive today. Meant to add deffinition to cheekbones, jaw lines etc? yes? So I will look like Kate Moss? Obviously.... :o

Good luck with today Jodie, we shall be expecting a full, unbiased report tomorrow :)

sugarandspiceandallthingsnice · 30/09/2011 09:34

Ahh, being seduced by this thread after reading all 16 pages! I thought BE sounded familiar so checked and it is what I was made up in for my wedding day! I loved it and it looked great in the photos, so am now wondering why I did not continue with it!
DH promised me some make up and a lesson in BE as I never wear much make up, and have never got on with foundation as it makes me look ridiculous! Have the dreaded t zone oily bits and then dry cheeks, thanks genetics!

Will have a meander and let you know when if I get more stuff and try it out!

hester · 30/09/2011 10:03

OK, it arrived yesterday. I was very excited, watched the DVD, cleaned my make-up off and applied. And thought:

I love it Grin. Dewy, natural-looking, easy to apply, feels great on the skin.

But then, this morning, tried again and the results weren't nearly so good. This may be because I put it on in the dark (I leave for work at 6am), but I'm looking a bit orange and congealed across my cheekbones and nose. Nose pores have never been a problem but suddenly looking a bit open. And the bisque concealer is a bit of a disaster: it's so dark! It gave me brown panda eyes which I then had to frantically cover with the foundation powder, but it still looks a bit odd.

Sad

Where have I gone wrong? Did I put on too much powder? Not tap enough? Not buff enough? I'm really struck that last night it looked so much better, which makes me think that it may be my technique that is lacking. But is it possible that Light isn't light enough for me?

On the upside, I was very cynical about the Warmth - it looked very dark. But it looks lovely and natural on the face.

Ladies, I need some advice and some encouragement to keep on the yellow brick road...

JodieSwirlTapBuff · 30/09/2011 10:11

fanks Melted, you can be sure I will, in a level of detail that is in no way completely self-regarding and tedious Grin

Sugar ah, you too can recapture the beauty of your wedding-day-youth....COME BACK AND TELL THE CULT US HOW YOU GET ON

Livinginoz · 30/09/2011 10:16

Oh Bugger, have been reading this thread all week, and haven't bought it and I'm going home tonight. Do they sell it at Manchester Airport?????
