Tights Dilemma. What do you think of this?

After MUCH trawling of shops and six returned dresses, I have finally settled on a frock for a friend's wedding. It is navy blue with lots of little mustard colour butterflies all over it. However, as much as I love the dress, it is above knee-length and I HATE my knees. So, I need to wear opaque tights, preferably navy. I would also like to wear some mustard colour shoes but do you think that coloured shoes with navy tights will make me look like Minnie Mouse? Don't really want to wear navy shoes if I can help it.

Or do you have any other ideas? Help!

Btw, like the dress.

And loving the Tabio tights. If you chose them in navy, price wouldn't be so bad as you could wear them lots more times so would be an investment.

tethersend · 16/08/2011 17:25

Those tights are worth every penny, cornsilk- I have pairs I bought from there five years ago and they are still going strong.

BupCakes, I am going to say this out of love, but if you hate your knees you have bought the wrong dress. I'm sorry. I hate my knees too, and long ago resolved to wear nothing shorter than knee length, otherwise I just feel uncomfortable and look ridiculous as I am pulling the skirt/dress down all the bloody time. I suspect your knees are fine, however. Mustard tights do work on mere mortals as well though- you don't have to be super skinny.

Also, navy opaques are fine. I wore some yesterday. Nobody died. Well, just the one.

The Monsoon dress is not nice.

If you want a new dress, what's your size/budget?

BupcakesandCunting · 16/08/2011 17:36

I do wear above-the-kness dresses a lot tbh. I just tend to wear them over leggings/black opaques. It's just this dress that's causing me ballache because can't wear either of those under it :( I did want to find a plain black, '50s style dress, the type with a full skirt/fitted bodice so that I could wear my new leopard print cardi (fine knit) and pointed leopard shoes with it. Could not find one anywhere.

I am a size 14 top/12 bottom. I have Unfeasibly Large Norks which is why I have such bad problems. Please don't suggest a two-piece outfit as it would scramble what little brain power I have left. Budget is up to hundred quids.

And bear in mind, my "fashion" sense (hollow laugh) errs to the side of weird rather than Next-type fashions. IYSWIM.

Google Vivien of holloway - maybe if you call them they could do wick delivery for black 50s dress?

MrsPlesWearsAFez · 16/08/2011 18:09

Or quick even Hmm

BupcakesandCunting · 16/08/2011 18:13

I've had a Holloway frock before and it just didn't fit right. I know that I am in the minority because other people I know that have bought them have raved about them. :(

I am an awkward barstard. Grin

Any good?

Havingkittens · 16/08/2011 18:49

Bupcakes VoH dresses don't fit right on me either. Which is both good and bad. Bad because I really like some of their stuff, but good because I live about 15 mins walk from the shop and would be skinted if all their stuff fitted me.

What about trying Tara Starlet, Big Beautiful Barbara Brown, Heyday. Not necessarily for 50s circle dresses but if you like retro style you might find something you like from any of those. Or, depending on how much time you have, Pin Up Girl Clothing who have lots of great stuff but it's based in the US so could take longer than you have to deliver.

BupcakesandCunting · 16/08/2011 19:05

The first one you posted in lovely, tethers. I'm just looking at her other stuff now. Beehiving, I really like the one you linked to too.

HavingKittens, just looking at Tara Starlet now. Have seen about a billionty things that I want. Envy

Hmmm, that leopardskin number might be fantastic on you but might be a horrible cheap monstrosity - try and get to somewhere you can try on.

BupcakesandCunting · 16/08/2011 19:22

I was wondering whether it might be a cheapola monstrosity photograped in a flattering light...

I like 20th Century foxy but 50s is not really my era. I am dedicated to the late 60s/70s.

moonshine · 16/08/2011 19:39

This is not cheap but it has a fitted bodice, is knee-length with a full skirt and has the bonus of sleeves!

BupcakesandCunting · 16/08/2011 19:41

Ooooh Tethers, I like this link...

I'm loving this thread! Where do you all find these websites? Grin

Havingkittens · 16/08/2011 22:37

Ooh, I hadn't seen that leopard dress. Tara Starlet's stuff is usually quite respectable looking and of a reasonable quality for the price. I have a pair of her sailor trousers and they are really flattering. I'm very tempted by that dress I must say.

Havingkittens · 16/08/2011 22:41

Don't know where you are based but the do stock some Tara Starlet stuff downstairs in the big Top Shop in Oxford Circus.

Bupcakes I am feeling your stress!!! Got a wedding Saturday and I bought the planet dress below in desperation, but its really not me at all. Too polyestery and OTT. So sod it going to wear my old LK Bennett number see below- which I wear for work and try and jazz it up with a sparkly cardi and some nice shoes. Advice anyone on what colour shoes? Must say I am bit hacked off with the old nude and am considering a closed toe black platform (John Lewis has 30% off some KG/Nine West courts till end Aug

Oh well, DD2 (10) always says I have no fashion sense and cannot spell. So we'll forget " shear" tightsBlush

BupcakesandCunting · 18/08/2011 09:35

Sorry to start this thread up agian but I am having a mini-meltdown here.

Ok so the butterfly dress is out. Tried some navy opaques/mustard shoes on and I looked like Minnie Mouse, as I imagined. :( So it's back to the drawing board.

I've just being scouring ASOS and found this. I know it is on the casual side but you're never going to get me in a corsaged Coast number anyway Wink But I thought if I dressed it up a bit with some nice black patent platforms that I have, I alo have a lovely gold/brown chunky necklace/earrings to go with it. Tell me your honest thoughts please ladies. Before I start headbutting the wall.

I am not a fan of animal print, but I think the shape could work ok with your boobs.

But doesn't the knees problem come up again with that dress?
