Tights Dilemma. What do you think of this?

After MUCH trawling of shops and six returned dresses, I have finally settled on a frock for a friend's wedding. It is navy blue with lots of little mustard colour butterflies all over it. However, as much as I love the dress, it is above knee-length and I HATE my knees. So, I need to wear opaque tights, preferably navy. I would also like to wear some mustard colour shoes but do you think that coloured shoes with navy tights will make me look like Minnie Mouse? Don't really want to wear navy shoes if I can help it.

Or do you have any other ideas? Help!

I do not have the legs of that lady in mustard tights, Tether. Sad as that makes me. :(

I don't think that the dress I have lends itself to fishnets very well, either.

Looks like I'm back to square one.

I have a paranoid fear of coloured fishnets after I wore purple ones to a wedding last year. They were not flattering. I looked like this. May investigate nude fishnets though.

I will only wear black fishnets if my hemline falls below the knee. Would not distress the world at large by exposing them to my fishnetted knees.

I blame my mother. I got my elephant knees from her. Grrr.

I'd do navy tights and mustard shoes myself, they'd go with the style of the dress!

I'm wearing opaques to a wedding at the weekend! DUM DUM DURRR!

BaronessBomburst · 16/08/2011 13:48

Dunno. They wear fishnets with everything in Italy. The Dutch would put leggings with it. Grey ones. And then brown boots. I'm not helping am I?

How can your knees be that bad anyway? No-one has attractive knees. Knees are just like that.

BupcakesandCunting · 16/08/2011 13:52

OK, but knees are either "just knees" or "fugly knees". Mine are fugly knees. They are weird. They don't have a "kneecap shape, IYSWIM? They're just flat and dimpled at the same time. They're awful. Can I have surgery on my knees?

Dutch style sounds like my idea of nice. Grin

When we moved into our first home we were struggling to work out what to put with a dark blue carpet.

In the end a friend came to our aid and told us it was simple - we just had to ditch the carpet.

Could you re-think the dress? Not that I don't think it is charming, but it seems to have opened up a pandora's box of problems in the navy/mustard/knee/skin/tights area.

Sorry.

startail · 16/08/2011 14:06

I'd do navy tights and navy or mustard shoes depending on which were comfy, sorry you stand around for hours at weddings.
But I'd go for the best 10-20 denier shear navy tights you can afford. (I was given some Dior ones as a teen, by a family friend with a posh undies shop) they were lovely. It really isn't late enough for winter tights.

colditz · 16/08/2011 14:08

I bet there is nothing wrong with your bloody knees. Go bare legs or you're going to boil.

Spagbolagain · 16/08/2011 14:10

This might sound odd, but have you thought about leggings?

I am not a fan of my knees, they are of the dimpled variety, and even on a thinnish day, I have a weird overhang of flesh from above......anyways....

I am a fan of the navy legging. Then coupled with coloured shoes, or sandals, especially something with a wedge or high heel, can be funky and glam. And cos it's overtly leggings it's like "I like this look and I meant to do it" rather than "I hate my knees so am going to wear thick tights".

Or am I odd?

BaronessBomburst · 16/08/2011 14:12

Not odd. Dutch, maybe? Grin

Spagbolagain · 16/08/2011 14:14

Hmmm but no boots, no bike and no sour milk please :o

Leggings are less sweaty than tights too. I love my leggings

BupcakesandCunting · 16/08/2011 14:24

I could ditch the dress, but honestly, it's the seventh dress I've bought. I can't face another day trawling the shops. It fits be really nicely, covers my top arms (that's another hornet's nest; if I take this one back I need to find another that will cover those) it's comfortable and I don't feel like a twat in it.

I wish someone had told me it's too early for winter tights before now, I've been gallavanting around in them for months. Blush

I don't think I could wear leggings for a wedding either. Too casual.

Oh fucking fuckity fuck.

This is the www.monsoon.co.uk/fusion-alioth-heart-print-dress/invt/95303241/&bklist=icat,4,shop,fusion,fusiondresses one I took back yesterday. I love the dress but I felt like a Swiss milkmaid in it.

Spagbolagain · 16/08/2011 14:35

Prefer the butterflies tbh.

How about saying in the mirror "fugly knees are a state of mind", then sodding it and going out with a hint of a fake tan glow.

The thing is, unless you are a giant, nobody notices your knees. As people have to look down to see your legs, your knees are always overshadowed by your dress unless it is really micro. Particularly if the knee problem is one seen at short ranges, the angles mean that anybody within about 10 feet can't really see them anyway. Especially if they are drunk.

I bet your knees are lovely really.

BranchingOut · 16/08/2011 15:09

Hmmmmm

Trousers under the dress?
Wearing a skirt under the dress?
this in mustard?

Woolly or cotton tights -surprisingly can be cooler than nylons.
If the mustard shoes are Mary Janes then it works with the slightly retro look.

BupcakesandCunting · 16/08/2011 15:17

The shoes I had seen are t-bars with heels.

OP posts:
BranchingOut · 16/08/2011 15:37

They could work quite well.

HellonHeels · 16/08/2011 15:46

Please no sheer navy tights! Dark sheer tights are the devil's work.

I'd go with nude micronets or coloured opaques with the mustard shoes.

Namechangeoshame · 16/08/2011 15:55

Ooooh, we're veering onto my "what the hell do I wear on my legs thread from the other day".
Am going to try Sally Hanson but if test run is a disaster then nude fishnets were fallback position - do we have a consensus that these are OK and not silly?

BupcakesandCunting · 16/08/2011 16:30

I like nude fishnets. Have worn them myself. They are tres chic (just don't go with my dress)

Right, I am doing coloured opaques and mustard shoes.

What about chalk coloured tights. ie. just off white. Very 60s and quite fashionable at the moment.

polyhymnia · 16/08/2011 17:16

Sorry not to be more constructive but I too have a horror of navy sheer tights and really don't think they would work with that (or anything).

I'm another fan of nude micros btw - has someone already recommended where to get those? (They used to have them in M and S, but no longer).

I like your coloured opaques and colourful shoes idea best, though.
