What item of clothing or accessory do you JUST NOT WEAR?

ItsNotRocketSurgery · 17/06/2011 19:30

Even though you think it's a perfectly fine garment, and can look lovely on other people?

I don't wear clothes with writing on. Or pictures. Patterns yes, but no motifs.

I have no idea why. I don't think they are ugly or trashy or frumpy or too young, they're just not me.

What's your "nothing wrong with it but it's just not me" item?

OP posts:

Shoes. I try and go straight from boots to sandals in spring and back again in autumn (with converse style trainers as an inbetween standby.) I hate tights and I don't really know how to fit shoes into an outfit.
Also halternecks as I have big shoulder and don't need them accentuated.

FrancesFarmer · 18/06/2011 23:25

Hmm... so many things. I'm getting fussier with each passing year.

Leather jackets - I can see how useful they are but they just don't work for me.

Empire lines and wrap cardigans - too "huggy" for me. To explain, I associate these garments with warm, bubbly women and I'm rather reserved and aloof.

Cropped/bolero jackets and cardigans - just no.

Short jackets - prefer longer trenches and parkas as they're easier to match with outfits.

High heels - I just don't feel comfortable in them (mentally and physically).

Strapless tops dresses or anything that requires a strapless bra - afraid they will fall down.

Loads more but they're the main ones.

MumblingRagDoll · 18/06/2011 23:32

Beads....I can't see the point in them. They're just so....THERE.....look at me with my beads on.

FrancesFarmer · 18/06/2011 23:40

Yes, MumblingRagDoll - they work better on Christmas Trees than on people, I think!

Awomancalledhorse · 18/06/2011 23:46

I can't wear open toed/sandles/peep toes or any high heel without a supportive strap, just sensible (boring?) like that.

AuraofDora · 18/06/2011 23:56

those sandals with a toe thong - that's all wrong, looks torture quite frankly
saw special plasters for them I mean, wtf..

clothes with logos / writing - nah someone has scribbled on you look

fleece

beige, anything beige or nude they call it now - throw in the towel and apply to southern cross

hth

Awomancalledhorse · 19/06/2011 00:05

AuraofDora, agree with the beige/nude/camel too! Grrrh, when did it get so popular?

MadameCastafiore · 19/06/2011 07:15

Gold jewellry
Cheap jewellery
Crocs
Trainers (unless at gym or out running/cycling)
Ditto sportswear
Anything with a logo on it
Coloured bras - only ever wear nude
Anything lilac - why would you??
Anything fleece - again don't know why anyone would under the age of 65.
Heels with jean s- just looks a bit desperate to me.

MoChan · 19/06/2011 07:53

Trainers.
Toe post shoes. I find them painful.
Stillettos (sp?) - I like high heels, but only the wedge or chunky kind.
Gold jewellery.
Busy prints, floral prints, any prints, really.
Stripes, as a rule.
Anything baggy.
Stuff with writing on.
Elaborate cardigans (I like cardigans, but not frilly ones, or waterfally-ones, etc).
Fabrics like chiffon/georgette, etc.

bigbadbarry · 19/06/2011 08:40

Mumblingragdoll, completely agree re beads,

polyhymnia · 19/06/2011 10:27

Sticking to the original question - ie, things I think can look fine on others but I wouldn't wear:

  • sleeveless, or strapless, dresses
  • dresses miles above knee
  • pink, orange, or yellow
  • large areas of beige
  • seriously high heels
  • vast majority of skirts
  • ditto gold or 'gold-coloured' jewellery
  • bright red nail varnish
  • fleeces, except in unlikely event they were essential for some exercise-type activity, like an epic hill walk (in those circs., aesthetic considerations are not so relevant).

Lots of other things (including Per Una, except for the occasional plain item, tent-like dresses, elasticated waistbands, vast majority of linen trousers, Crocs, bags with lots of bling, etc, etc) I just don't like on anyone - but that's another thread.

ColonelBrandonsBiggestGroupie · 19/06/2011 10:34

Agree with gold - it looks awful on me and tbh I think it looks cheap most of the time anyway. I much prefer silver.

TheStallionOfSensibleness · 19/06/2011 10:36

anyone else askance at this thread?

BulletWithAName · 19/06/2011 10:37

Also open toed shoes and sandals must add- I have hideous feet so sadly can't wear them, although I wish I could!

TheStallionOfSensibleness · 19/06/2011 10:39

i imagine you all like this www.modestclothing.com/cgi-bin/product.pl?productid=552&groupid=26

BulletWithAName · 19/06/2011 10:44

Oh yes, that's the sort of thing I'd wear! Very me Grin

ColonelBrandonsBiggestGroupie · 19/06/2011 10:54

Ooh you're looking good there, Stallion. Now let's see you in the Anglomania! :)

PedigreeChump · 19/06/2011 11:12

Hmmm, obviously you lot have never seen me in a tunic top and leggings cause I look AWESOME!

I wear leggings/long top practically every day Blush

I can't do tight waist belts, or spanx. I can't breathe or digest food whilst wearing either, but they do look good (the belts, never seen anyone else in spanx) on others.

TrilllianAstra · 19/06/2011 12:43

I don't wear green.

Turquioise or teal yes, but not green green.

No idea why.

I don't wear orange either but that's because I don't like orange.

BinEnd · 19/06/2011 17:26

I can't wear leather jackets or coats - they make me look like a hard bitch from a Martina Cole book.

sue52 · 19/06/2011 17:43

Leggings
sports wear
logos
per una
nylon looking fabric
waterfall cardigans
ugly footwear (sod comfort)
country casuals
fur
fleece
things that show acres of chest (I've only got inches)
Loads more but these are top of my no list.

polyhymnia · 19/06/2011 17:50

Do you actually think Per Una can look 'lovely' on others, which was the idea behind the OP? I don' t ! (with a very few exceptions)

Bunbaker · 19/06/2011 17:59

"Trainers"

I live in trainers. What do you wear with jeans? It is too warm for boots and too cold for anything without socks at the moment.

No-nos for me are:
Thongs
strappy/strapless tops - my shoulders are too bony
jumpsuits
shorts with leggings
low rise trousers/jeans - far too uncomfortable
Really high heels - I can't walk in them
Crocs - hideous things
Low cut tops - no cleavage Sad
Yellow
Orange
Lime green
Anything with a brand name/store name on the front - I am not paying good money to advertise a store or brand. They should be paying me!

slug · 19/06/2011 19:17

I am an apple shape and a serious swimmer with the sort of arms and shoulders a Russian shot putter would be proud of, so my no nos are

One shoulder or sleeveless tops dresses etc
Belts. They either emphasis my fattest feature or go under the boobs thereby emphasizing how I got outwards immediately beneath.
Heels. I've simply never got the hang of them

niminypiminy · 19/06/2011 22:08

Neutral colours. If you're blonde and groomed and have the right kind of style, then neutrals (caramel through camel to nude, beige, fawn, apricot, peach, virtually all pastels) can look really gorgeous. On me, on the other hand, they make me look slightly dead.

Anything with frills. I often look at women who have a very feminine style and seriously admire them but I can't do it myself. I just look like a man in drag.

Shirts. I always think 'this is the year I'm going to buy a white shirt and look as chic as all those women who wear them.' But I try them on and simply feel uncomfortable.

On the other hand, of frequently mentioned items on this list I adore:

Hats: love 'em and wear them alot
Yellow: my favourite coat is yellow
Orange: I one of my favourite buys this winter was a pair of burnt orange tights
