What item of clothing or accessory do you JUST NOT WEAR?

ItsNotRocketSurgery · 17/06/2011 19:30

Even though you think it's a perfectly fine garment, and can look lovely on other people?

I don't wear clothes with writing on. Or pictures. Patterns yes, but no motifs.

I have no idea why. I don't think they are ugly or trashy or frumpy or too young, they're just not me.

What's your "nothing wrong with it but it's just not me" item?

OP posts:
ceebeegeebies · 17/06/2011 20:41

Hats - think they can look stunning on other people but bloody awful on me Sad

Ragwort · 17/06/2011 20:44

Leggings/jeggings/hipster/skinny trousers - yuk

Polo necks (just seen nicespam's comments)

one shouldered/off the shoulder things

see through anything

heels higher than 1 inch (2.5 cm for younger people Grin)

Bikinis - obviously (do have a tankini though)

White trousers - how do people keep them clean?

Dontbugmemalone · 17/06/2011 20:45

Nothing looks good on me :(

I have an odd ability to make nice clothes look rubbish.

What the hell is a gilet?

BulletWithAName · 17/06/2011 21:02

Drop-waist dresses- far too hourglassy for these!
All in one swimsuits
Heels lower than 4 inches...what's the point? Grin

KangarooCaught · 17/06/2011 21:12

Used to wear the shortest shorts in my yoof, really don't know what I was thinking! Now I have a vein on my calf so not a chance.

And I can't make a pencil skirt look right somehow even though imo they can look very sexy.

tulpe · 17/06/2011 21:55

I concur with the pencil skirt, Kangaroo. I suspect DH would be appreciative but being a SAHM I would feel as though I were in fancy dress of the Ms A Summers variety.

I am surprised how many have listed scarves. I am never knowingly without a scarf or shawl about my personage.

I refuse to wear:

  • bodycon (despite being a size 8...it makes me feel like Liz MacDonald)
  • those tunics so beloved of White Stuff and Fat Face
  • gilet: although to my shame I do secretly crave one. However, the ones I have tried either make me look like Vicki Pollard (Fat Face) or Tallulah Pony-Club (Joules)
  • trainers: they are for sport only so I wear them when go for a run.
  • shrugs: Make me look like a shot-putter.
LittleMissFlustered · 17/06/2011 22:01

Heels and hats. On the right people they can be fantastic, either on me is just a nightmare. I can't even wear those floofy feathery fascinators.

mippy · 17/06/2011 22:25

Pink.

Though many things are out if you have a large bust and an hourglass figure - empire lines, sewn in cups, backless tops...

cybbo · 17/06/2011 22:26

I never wear anything boho-ish makes look like Germaine Greer circa 1968

mippy · 17/06/2011 22:27

Oh yes, and androgynous/'boyfriend' styles. If you are 5ft 10, large busted and have bigger feet than your boyfriend, you just look like you've shopped at Stolen From Ivor. But really really cute on petite women.

AlpinePony · 18/06/2011 07:01

"Floaty" - lest I look like Mama Cass.

bellavita · 18/06/2011 07:37

High heels
Dresses
Anything with words or pictures (patterns are ok in moderation) but floral patterns are not OK ever, unless very stylised, graphic style and bearing no resemblance to actual flower colours
Clothes that remind me of the 80s
Clothes that remind me of the early 90s
Any sort of pants or short shorts that make my legs look stick-like, including leggings
Strapless tops, backless tops and spaghetti strap tops -- I think the term is skimpy tops

According to the DDs, any clothes that are remotely fashionable...

TigerFeet · 18/06/2011 08:00

polo necks - too large and dangly of nork

dresses - I don't think I've ever found one that actually fits me properly

high heels - would love to have millions of pairs of beautiful shoes but I just can't walk in them and have funny shaped flipper feet that look ridiculous in strappy shoes

ginmakesitallok · 18/06/2011 08:05

Heels - can't walk in them, would break my neck
Strapless anything
One- shouldered anything
Words/motifs/pictures on tops
Harem trousers
tracksuits

Megatron · 18/06/2011 08:12

Maxi dresses. I love them but they make me look like a twat.

Uggs. Just because they're hideous and every other person in the world seems to have them.

I do love white slim leg jeans though so I have no taste! Smile

High heels or flip flops, because they're uncomfortable to walk in. Leggings, skinny jeans, because they'd make me look ridiculous. Actually any jewellery really, I just never saw the point.

I'm intrigued by the wearing of scarves for reasons other than keeping your neck warm. I have some little silk scarves as well as the wooly winter variety, but they're still for keeping out draughts on breezy spring/autumn days! They probably look a bit prissy but they do the job.

Clarence15 · 18/06/2011 08:29

Long skirts or maxi dresses - they're always too long and would drag on the floor tempting someone to step on them and send me flying.

Anything cropped - never, not with this belly

Hipsters, same belly issue

Hats, never go anywhere that requires one though, apart from the snow.

virginiasmonalogue · 18/06/2011 08:33

Converse - I have cankles and short legs
One shoulder tops- too unsymmetrical
Knee length skirts - do NOT flatter muscular calves
Logos - just don't feel the need
Slingback sandals- fall off my skinny feet
( just noticed how disproportionate my feet and legs are )

ifancyashandy · 18/06/2011 08:38

Linen trousers
Heeled trainers
Crocs
Anything Per Una or Next or Monsoon
Tracksuits
Velour
Frills
Polyester
Elasticated waists
'Character' clothes
Holister
Ed Hardy
'interesting' shoes
Anything the Fairy Jobmother might wear
Anything visibly Karen Millen (but do wear their heels)
Anything from Wallis
Anything from a supermarket
Non matching underwear

I am a clothes snob and spend a small fortune on them.
